Description
Vietti is absolutely a top domain. The robust Barolos and Barberas from Mario Cordero are world class and very scarce! The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages that are allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. They were also pioneers in bottling “single vineyard” Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region and now all single vineyard Barolos are issued on allocation and only a handful of bottles are ever available per country. The potential of their wines is unprecedented and from the good years this is 30 years+
This is a nice 1.5 liter magnum in OWC/1 - Even tastier and with a longer drinking window.
The Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio is a refined and sensual wine from one of the most prestigious crus of Barolo, located in La Morra, this wine offers a unique combination of power and elegance, with an expressive fruitiness and a balanced structure. The nose opens with deep notes of dark cherries, followed by dried mint and licorice root, which add a spicy and refreshing dimension. In addition, there is a subtle hint of navel orange, which provides a lively and aromatic lift.
On the palate, the 2020 Cerequio presents itself with a velvety and chalky tannic structure, which is beautifully interwoven with the fresh acidity. Although the fruit in this vintage is slightly more linear and less layered than in cooler years, the wine remains beautifully balanced, thanks to the fine integration of ripe tannins and a firm acidity. This gives the wine both drinkability at a younger age and excellent aging potential.
The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrique, which contributes to the creamy texture and softer acidity. It is then aged for two years in large oak barrels, which provides a subtle wood influence and added complexity without masking the terroir. This traditional approach emphasizes the elegance and finesse of Cerequio, while the wine retains its characteristic structure and aromatic expression.
The Cerequio vineyard, located in La Morra, is known for its rich and chalky soils, which produce an exceptionally elegant and refined style of Barolo. This terroir produces wines with silky tannins and a delicate floral touch, but also with a deep concentration and a long finish.
The Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio will continue to develop over the next 15 to 25 years, evolving from fruity and spicy aromas to deeper notes of truffle, leather and dried flowers. This Barolo is best paired with elegant yet flavorful dishes such as risotto with porcini mushrooms, truffle pasta, slow-cooked beef or roasted rack of lamb. It will also shine with hard-matured cheeses such as an aged Pecorino or a 36-month aged Parmigiano Reggiano. With only 3,866 bottles produced, the Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio is a rare and coveted expression of one of La Morra’s finest terroirs.

The Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio (with 3,866 bottles made) has a little more hot-vintage thickness or softness on the mid-palate and shows aromas of dark cherry, dried mint, licorice root and naval orange. The fruit is a little more one-dimensional in 2020, although the acidity is there and the fruit tannins feel velvety and chalky. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and then goes into large oak casks for two years.
Vietti has access to Nebbiolo from 10 MGA sites to make the various wines in its ample portfolio. We also have a new wine to celebrate—the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà—that knocks it out of the ballpark with its inaugural release.

Impressive depth of color and brightness from this Cerequio that comes with so much fruit. So fragrant and complex. Fresh brambly raspberries, red cherries, grapefruit and mineral. Pure, ripe and racy, with fully resolved tannins and a tense, compact finish. Expressive and impressive! Vegan. Already approachable for the depth of fruit, but better from 2027 for additional complexity.

From: 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence (Jan 2024)
The 2020 Barolo Cerequio once again confirms that buying this vineyard is one of the smartest decisions Vietti ever made. A wine of nuance and class, the Cerequio captures all the pedigree of this great site. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, blood orange, spice and mint soar out of the glass, all framed by nervy tannins that convey classicism. This is an exotic, racy Barolo.
- By Antonio Galloni on November 2023
I tasted a wide range of wines on my most recent visit to Vietti. Starting with the 2020 Barolos, I tasted every wine from a just-opened bottle and a bottle that had been double-decanted two hours prior to my arrival. Aeration can be a tricky thing with young, just-bottled wines. Sometimes, air can help young wines open but also shut them down hard. In 2020, the double-decanted bottles showed better. Overall, there is a bit more variation from wine to wine than I am used to seeing, while some of the Barolos are on the lighter side.
In 2020, virtually all the fruit for the single-vineyard Barolos was picked in late September, before the early October rains. Harvest resumed on October 5 with the second portion of Lazzarito and various parcels used in the Barolo Castiglione. The 2020s spent about 24 days on the skins, with submerged cap maceration for most lots. Time in cask was 24-26 months.
Readers will note several new wines in the range. Vietti’s 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is stellar. The same is true, incidentally, of the 2020 Barbaresco Roncaglie. I have long admired the Barbarescos here. That is once again the case this year. The 2016 Barolo Riserva is the next incarnation of the 2015 Barolo Riserva that was released last year, but it was made from different vineyards and vinified with a high percentage of whole clusters. I would be remiss if I did not spend some time on the entry-level offerings. The 2021 Barberas are fabulous. These are wines I bought often as a young consumer and continue to enjoy as often as possible. Ripeness and oak impact have been dialed back, which really allows the purity of the fruit to come through.

Vietti is definitely a top domain. Mario Cordero's robust Barolos and Barberas are world class and very scarce! In addition, he brings an extremely good Nebbiolo to the market with the Nebbiolo Langhe Perbacco. This is sufficiently available and very affordable. This also applies to the crisp, fresh, soft-sweet Moscato d'Asti. And then of course there is the story behind the labels... Since 1974, a select number of Vietti wines (since 1988 only the Barolo Riserva Villero) are labeled with a specially designed, original work of art. The print run of the artwork is equal to the number of bottles of the wine in question that are made in this vintage. The first hundred labels are also signed by the artist himself, so real collector's items!
The history of the Vietti family as a wine company goes back to the 19th century. In the early years, grapes were grown, but they were sold to the Coöperatie and other winegrowers. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did the family decide to start making their own wine. In recent years, no one in Piedmont has set the bar higher than Vietti. All their wines are of exceptionally high quality. Winemaker Luca Currado built on the success of his parents Alfredo and Lucia. The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. In addition, they were pioneers in bottling "single vineyard" Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche one of the better wine companies in Piemonte. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region. The Vietti wines come from grapes from the Castiglione Falletto vineyards, the heart of the Barolo zone. The qualities of sandy calcareous soil in this area give a unique complexity and beautiful tannins to the elegant wines. The average age of the vines is between 30 and 70 years.
