Description
Vietti is absolutely a top domain. The robust Barolos and Barberas from Mario Cordero are world class and very scarce! The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages that are allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. They were also pioneers in bottling “single vineyard” Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region and now all single vineyard Barolos are issued on allocation and only a handful of bottles are ever available per country. The potential of their wines is unprecedented and from the good years this is 30 years+
The Vietti 2020 Barolo Lazzarito is a wine of exceptional depth and complexity, produced from the prestigious vineyards of Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most appreciated terroirs in Barolo. This vintage is among Vietti's most powerful and expressive wines, setting a high level of quality within their latest releases.
At first impression, the wine offers a refined and layered blend of dark cherries and crème de cassis, elegantly framed by floral notes of violet macaroons, dried herbs and lavender. The aromatic intensity evokes warm summers with an interplay of floral and spicy nuances that unfold beautifully on the nose.
On the palate, Lazzarito reveals a refined and balanced structure, with polished tannins that are powerful yet silky. The wine has a streamlined intensity, with acidity and tannins in perfect balance, creating a lively, fresh backbone. This is a Barolo with both depth and refinement, and a long, harmonious finish that lingers elegantly.
The Lazzarito vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba is known for its chalky and compact soils, which contribute to the impressive structure and longevity of the wine. The wines from this area are characterised by power, intensity and refinement, qualities that are beautifully expressed in this vintage. The 2020 Barolo Lazzarito is a sublime reflection of this exceptional terroir and will only gain in complexity with age.
With its firm structure and balanced acidity, this Barolo has excellent aging potential and can continue to evolve for decades. The wine is already coming into its own, but will develop further between 2026 and 2050 with tertiary aromas such as truffle, leather and dried herbs.
This powerful and layered Barolo deserves a gastronomic accompaniment. It goes perfectly with game dishes such as venison or pheasant, slow-cooked ossobuco, or a classic tajarin with white truffle from Piemonte. Matured cheeses such as Pecorino Riserva or an old Parmigiano Reggiano will also enhance the complexity of the wine.
With a limited production of only 10,626 bottles, the Vietti 2020 Barolo Lazzarito is an exclusive and coveted wine that should not be missing in the collection of serious Barolo lovers and collectors.

Lazzarito stands out as one of the strongest wines in this portfolio of new releases from Vietti. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito comes in at a very high threshold in terms of complexity, offering dark cherry, crème de cassis, violet macaron, dried herb and lavender. The wine's perfumes remind me of the south of France in summer. It shows elegant tannins, streamlined intensity and good acidity. Production is 10,626 bottles.
Vietti has access to Nebbiolo from 10 MGA sites to make the various wines in its ample portfolio. We also have a new wine to celebrate—the 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà—that knocks it out of the ballpark with its inaugural release.

There is a little more savoriness here, showing contained power. Tar and dark minerality. Plenty of forest berries, dried orange peel, frozen grapefruit and raspberries. Very structured and full-bodied, with firm, chewy tannins rendering the bold austere quality to the wine. But at the end, this is focused and taut, with a crunchy, spicy finish full of length. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drinkable now if you are willing to embrace austerity, but this should be better from 2027.

From: 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence (Jan 2024)
The 2020 Barolo Lazzarito is a blend of fruit picked before and after the early October rains. It marries power and finesse to a notable degree. Dark red fruit, menthol, licorice, crushed rocks and dried herbs open nicely in the glass. This is a bit light for a Serralunga Barolo, although the tannic structure is there. This is missing a bit of personality.

I tasted a wide range of wines on my most recent visit to Vietti. Starting with the 2020 Barolos, I tasted every wine from a just-opened bottle and a bottle that had been double-decanted two hours prior to my arrival. Aeration can be a tricky thing with young, just-bottled wines. Sometimes, air can help young wines open but also shut them down hard. In 2020, the double-decanted bottles showed better. Overall, there is a bit more variation from wine to wine than I am used to seeing, while some of the Barolos are on the lighter side.
In 2020, virtually all the fruit for the single-vineyard Barolos was picked in late September, before the early October rains. Harvest resumed on October 5 with the second portion of Lazzarito and various parcels used in the Barolo Castiglione. The 2020s spent about 24 days on the skins, with submerged cap maceration for most lots. Time in cask was 24-26 months.
Readers will note several new wines in the range. Vietti’s 2019 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is stellar. The same is true, incidentally, of the 2020 Barbaresco Roncaglie. I have long admired the Barbarescos here. That is once again the case this year. The 2016 Barolo Riserva is the next incarnation of the 2015 Barolo Riserva that was released last year, but it was made from different vineyards and vinified with a high percentage of whole clusters. I would be remiss if I did not spend some time on the entry-level offerings. The 2021 Barberas are fabulous. These are wines I bought often as a young consumer and continue to enjoy as often as possible. Ripeness and oak impact have been dialed back, which really allows the purity of the fruit to come through.

Vietti is definitely a top domain. Mario Cordero's robust Barolos and Barberas are world class and very scarce! In addition, he brings an extremely good Nebbiolo to the market with the Nebbiolo Langhe Perbacco. This is sufficiently available and very affordable. This also applies to the crisp, fresh, soft-sweet Moscato d'Asti. And then of course there is the story behind the labels... Since 1974, a select number of Vietti wines (since 1988 only the Barolo Riserva Villero) are labeled with a specially designed, original work of art. The print run of the artwork is equal to the number of bottles of the wine in question that are made in this vintage. The first hundred labels are also signed by the artist himself, so real collector's items!
The history of the Vietti family as a wine company goes back to the 19th century. In the early years, grapes were grown, but they were sold to the Coöperatie and other winegrowers. Only at the beginning of the 20th century did the family decide to start making their own wine. In recent years, no one in Piedmont has set the bar higher than Vietti. All their wines are of exceptionally high quality. Winemaker Luca Currado built on the success of his parents Alfredo and Lucia. The quality is phenomenal and consistent across the entire range. Vietti is the only producer who owns vineyards in the eleven villages allowed to produce Barolo. They were the first to replant the forgotten local white grape “Arneis”. In addition, they were pioneers in bottling "single vineyard" Baroli. This was the legendary 1961 Barolo Rocche one of the better wine companies in Piemonte. By being one of the first wine estates to export to the US, Vietti quickly became a big name in the Piemonte region. The Vietti wines come from grapes from the Castiglione Falletto vineyards, the heart of the Barolo zone. The qualities of sandy calcareous soil in this area give a unique complexity and beautiful tannins to the elegant wines. The average age of the vines is between 30 and 70 years.
