Description
Giuseppe Quintarelli's namesake, the Rosso del Bepi (made before this legendary figure passed away in 2012), is made in the so-called average vintages when Amarone is not produced. This wine replaces Amarone in those released years. The Bepi was made in 2008 and again in 2010, with the same grapes used in Amarone della Valpolicella Classico produced in 2009 and 2011.
The final decision on which wine will be released is made just a few months before bottling, so the wine receives the exact same aging. In particularly difficult years, no wine is produced. This wine reflects the ideals of a classic blend of Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella (with a smaller percentage of other varietals mixed in for good measure), though you can feel the added warmth of the vintage, with a lingering sweetness at the finish. The wine registers an alcohol content of 15.5% and there are ripe nuances of dark fruit, sweet cherry, and jammy blackberry. The wine is immediately open, approachable, and beautiful, but like all Quintarelli releases, it would also benefit from further aging.
This is highly recommended because it's made the same way and from the same grapes, but only in a truly outstanding vintage does it become an Amarone, which makes the wine twice as expensive (and certainly not twice as good). This Bepi Rosso also continues to receive high ratings. The 2016 won't be released until 2025.
In the years leading up to "Bepi" Giuseppe Quintarelli's death in 2012 from Parkinson's disease, there was much confusion surrounding the fortunes of this top winery. Giuseppe Quintarelli had been ill for a long time, but his surviving family (four daughters and numerous grandchildren) have begun a new chapter more than a year after his death. Quintarelli's heirs, Francesco and Lorenzo (both grandsons), now jointly manage the estate with Giampaolo (son-in-law) and continue to focus on delivering only top quality.

Because the Quintarelli family did not make a 2016 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, fruit for that wine came to this wine instead. The 2016 Rosso del Bepi does have a hint of herbal greenness (which is why the top-tier wine was not produced) followed by pressed blackberry and cherry liqueur. I also get a pinch of bitter chocolate. However, this is a declassified Amarone, and you get a good sense of its depth and complexity. The fruit underwent up to four months of appassimento and went into oak botte for six to seven years. It was bottled in March 2023 with 15.5% alcohol (compared to the 16.5% you see in most vintages of Amarone). It offers intensity and generosity. The Rosso del Bepi was made in 2010, 2014 and 2016.
I always try to schedule my tasting trips to Valpolicella during appassimento, or when harvested fruit is left to air-dry in specially ventilated hangars. The fruit loses much of its water mass during the process, thus increasing flavors, concentration and alcohol. Of the many estates I regularly visit, Giuseppe Quintarelli is among my favorites because of the traditional approach taken. There is one hangar dedicated to grapes drying in plastic crates, and on the other side of the winery, there is a second hangar with grapes carefully laid out on bamboo racks. You also see the celebrated trecce, or "braids," of grapes hung from a ceiling rafter. Each braid weighs 30 kilograms. It is such a beautiful site.
While visiting the Giuseppe Quintarelli winery with its cramped spaces and dark corners, I tasted with grandsons Lorenzo and Francesco in the very same tasting room I first visited 20 years ago with the master himself.
Carved oak botte stand outside the tasting room. One shows an enormous peacock, a symbol of purity, and around it are symbols of the family and their vineyards. The Giuseppe Quintarelli estate counts 11 hectares of vines on limestone and basalt soils. Annual production is 60,000 bottles. Only estate fruit is used, although extra fruit is purchased in some years if there is an emergency such as significant hail.

There will be no Amarone in 2016; instead, we’re treated to a new vintage of Rosso del Bepi. This is dark and brooding in the glass, youthfully coy, with a bouquet of dried roses and violets. Complicating whiffs of incense give way to cherry sauce and dark chocolate. It's rich and complex yet also remarkably energetic, with a tactile mineral core that enhances its tart red berry fruits while hints of sour orange add a cheek-puckering sourness toward the close. The 2016 finishes with medium length and a chalky sensation, tapering off with suggestions of licorice and tangerine. This sexy and energetic Rosso del Bepi will win a lot of hearts.

Quintarelli has been working hard to perfect a style that mixes the magic of older vintages with a new level of freshness and purity. The 2017 Amarone is a big step in that direction. What’s more, collectors can plan on enjoying a sexy and energetic 2016 Rosso del Bepi, as the winery decided not to produce an Amarone. While the Rosso doesn’t possess the depth of a Quintarelli Amarone, it remains a serious wine worthy of attention. I’m a fan of this cool vintage, which, in this case, didn’t quite fit with the Amarone house style. However, both Valpolicella Superiores from 2016 are stunning, with the Ca’ del Merlo taking things to another level. I also tasted the 2015 Amarone again. It remains intense and youthfully coiled yet full of potential. Of note, there will be a 2015 Riserva, which will be released in late 2024 to early 2025.

The shy and calm elderly man, Giuseppe Quintarelli, is THE frame of reference for winemakers from the Valpolicella. Born and raised in Cerè, he has been running the family business since 1954, which dates back to 1924. For the last 10 years, he has been assisted by his cousin Marco. This house presents very traditionally made wines, with those ever so recognizable, unique handwritten labels. Its red wines age for an unprecedented length (6 to 7 years) in barrels of Slovenian oak, except for the cuvee 'Alzero', which undergoes aging on barriques. Our traditional flavors and methods must be cherished and not forgotten. Above all, we cannot force nature. We need to keep calm, be patient, use the right techniques and have a lot of passion. " These words symbolize the philosophy of the most famous Veneto producer. Quintarelli wines are very complex and are without doubt one of the greatest wines in all of Italy. Icon wines that without any marketing have made it to the most sought after wines in the world, the ultimate 'wanna haves' for collectors, on wine lists in the best restaurants even rare, almost mythical in reputation.
In the years leading up to 'Bepi' Giuseppe Quintarelli's death in 2012 from Parkinson's disease, there was much confusion about the ups and downs of this absolute top wine house.
