Description
The Hexamter is a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. The medium to deep garnet purple 2016 Hexameter jumps out of the glass with bold scents of Black Forest cherry pie, cassis and red currant jelly, with suggestions of candied violets, pencil shavings, tea and cumin seeds, with a hint of cigar box. Medium to full bodied, the palate reveals layers of red and black fruits, beautifully infused with exotic spices and floral scents, framed by super ripe, super fine-grained tannins and fantastic freshness, with a long finish.

“With the Cabernet Franc being so beautiful, it was hard for us to ignore,” said Ovid’s winemaker, Austin Peterson, of the winery’s concept behind the creation of Hexameter. In 2006 Ovid was mainly Cabernet Franc; after that it was decided that in exceptional years for the grape, they would make Hexameter. “Hexameter is another expression of the estate," Peterson says. “Both Ovid and Hexameter express the site in very compelling ways."

OVID Napa Valley is a singular, dynamic and continuous experiment in terroir, nestled at an elevation of 1,349 feet on a secluded mountain top in the western reaches of Pritchard Hill. Here, iron-rich volcanic soils, abundant sunshine and chaparral flora alchemize to reveal focused, long-lived wines that celebrate their source.
Our four estate wines are sourced from our organically farmed fifteen acre vineyard, planted in one-acre blocks with rootstock and clonal combinations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah. Each year, we also release a small selection of Experiment wines – never to be made again – yet foundational to understanding the soul and ethos of our estate wines.
The son of a winemaker and a native of Sonoma County, OVID winemaker Austin Peterson started in 2006 as an enologist under the instruction of Andy Erickson. Austin has served as winemaker since 2010, embracing a tension between classical and cutting-edge methods. Today, he continues to push our wines to new heights and critical acclaim, knowing we have only scratched the surface of this remarkable place.
In 2017, OVID founders Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson began planning the winery’s next chapter together with Silver Oak proprietor David Duncan. Since then, we have worked to preserve the original je ne sais quoi of OVID, while also sharing resources from the Duncan family of wine brands, which share a deep commitment to sustainability, technology and quality.
