Description
The Dark Queen of Châteauneuf-du-Pape - this is the nickname of Domaine du Pégau (because of the many dark fruits) and of these the Inspiration is without doubt the most iconic Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This wine comes on the market magnum alone and only in the absolute top years. the 2016 was released at the end of 2020 and is the successor of the 2003 and 2010. Both good for 100 Points from Parker!!
The Chateauneuf du Pape Inspiration 2016 is very dark garnet red in colour. The wine is daring and perfumed with incredible aromas of roast meat, leather/leather, sweet berry liquorice, chocolate and Provencal herbs all coming out of the glass. On the palate, deep licorice and delicious cassis flavors have an incredibly rich density, even when they taste like filtered through wet earth. Incredible mineral depth lies behind this fruit and forest floor, as do the muscular, rippling tannins.
In the top years there is always a maximum of 1 barrel of this full, deeply concentrated elixir and is only bottled in magnum. Spectacular and a must-have for the wine cellar.
The Domaine du Pégau is located in the legendary wine appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhone valley, about twenty kilometers from Avignon. The internationally renowned winery was founded in 1987 by the Féraud family, but looks back on a winemaking tradition dating back to 1670.
The Domaine du Pegau plots extend over the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon and Bédarrides. We find the famous terroirs of La Crau West, La Crau East and La Crau South characterized by sand strewn with some pebbles. The wines are distinguished by their strength and a demonstration of elegance by their minerality and their length.

Still not in bottle, the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Inspiration is more sexy and perfumed than the Cuvee da Capo, with incredible notions of roasted meats, saddle leather, sweet currants and Provencal herbs all emerging from the glass. There’s a single barrel of this full-bodied, deeply concentrated elixir and I’ve no doubt it will be very hard to come by. In addition, this cuvee is only bottled in magnum. Nevertheless, it is spectacular, and I suspect will also have close to three decades of longevity.
This classic, benchmark estate for traditionally made wines is run by the talented, no-nonsense Laurence Feraud and her father Paul. While I struggle to think of a bad vintage here, 2010 certainly has to rank near the top of the heap and both the Cuvee Reservee and Cuvee da Capo are truly stunning, world-class efforts. 2011 is strong here as well, and should be consumed while you wait on the 2010s to come around. The 2012s are more in the style of the 2010s, with slightly more reserved aromatics, solid purity and beautifully fresh profiles. They too should be more accessible in their youth than the 2010s. A new development for this estate is the roughly 100+ new acres of Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Villages that have been purchased just south of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, roughly 4 miles from the domaine. Formerly called Domaine de la Jouve, it lies just outside the town of Sorgues and borders the Rhone River on its western edge. Now called Chateau Pegau, the wines from here include a white Cotes du Rhone, the Cuvee Lone, a red Cotes du Rhone call Cuvee Maclure and a red Cotes du Rhone Villages called Cuvee Setier. Laurence’s negociant label is call Selection Laurence Feraud and consists of purchased grapes from throughout the Southern Rhone. They always show traditional characters and can represent solid values.

The Domaine du Pégau is located in the legendary Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine appellation in the southern Rhône valley, about twenty kilometers from Avignon. The internationally renowned winery was founded in 1987 by the Féraud family, but looks back on a winemaking tradition that dates back to 1670. At that time, olives and cherries were grown in addition to grapes. Over time, the family focused on growing vines, selling the grapes to trading houses. At the end of the twentieth century, the resourceful daughter Laurence Féraud suggested to her parents that they start making their own wine. Since then, daughter Laurence and father Paul have managed the estate.
The Domaine du Pegau plots extend over the commune of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon and Bédarrides. We find the famous terroirs of La Crau West, La Crau East and La Crau South characterized by sand dotted with some pebbles. The wines are distinguished by their strength and a demonstration of elegance through their minerality and their length.
The vineyards are located on the left bank of the Rhône. The soils are characterized by black pebbles and red, sandy clay soil. You will find almost all thirteen varieties approved in the appellation. For the red wines grenache noir, mourvèdre, carignan, syrah, cinsault, counoise, for the white wines grenache blanc, clairette blanche, roussane, bourboulenc. A small amount of merlot has also been planted.
Domaine du Pégau produces four red wines - 'Cuvée Réservée', 'Cuvée Laurence', 'Cuvée Da Capo' and 'Cuvée Inspiration' - and two white whites - 'Cuvée Réservée' and 'Cuvée a tempo'. Since the creation of the Domaine, high prizes have regularly been awarded to the internationally renowned winery.
