Description
Louis Roederer's Cristal champagne is the extremely exclusive champagne produced only in the very best years. Once made especially for the Russian Tsar's Court, it is now prized by connoisseurs worldwide. Unfortunately, it is extremely scarce. The 2015 Crystal will require more patience than the 2015. Roederer's Brut Cristal has a nose of fresh apple, fennel, and cucumber. The champagne is exceptionally refreshing and has a very pleasant perlage, as you would expect from a top champagne. Beautiful aromas of honeysuckle, almond, and vanilla. Louis Roederer's Cristal is exceptionally balanced, refined, and exuberant. It is medium to full-bodied, deep, and layered, with a deep, concentrated, and rather introverted core of fruit framed by chalky notes and a beautifully refined mousse. This is a serious, wine-like champagne with plenty of aging potential and could very well evolve along the lines of the beautiful 1985. The drinking window is until 2050+.
FACT: As with all our wines, we only buy from the importer or the winery so that we can be sure that we have products that have been well-preserved and are genuine, as there is often more fake than genuine wine on the market.
The wine is stored in our climate-controlled Wine Warehouse, and if you pick it up, you'll often receive a nice discount. You'll see your discount immediately when you select "Pick up" at checkout. We're located in Dordrecht, just off the A16 motorway, with ample parking. Click here for our address.

The finest rendition since 2013, the 2016 Cristal has turned out beautifully. A vintage that Lecaillon describes as “difficult in the vineyards but beautiful in the cellar,” it had suffered slightly in reputation due to the gloomy mood during the challenging growing season, but the results are indeed impressive. The fifth edition produced entirely from organically farmed and certified fruit, and heavily based on Pinot Noir, the 2016 represents the contemporary quality of Cristal, combining the concentration of 2002 with the precision and cut of 2013. Disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter, it opens in the glass to reveal a bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and peeled almond, framed by youthful reduction. On the palate, it is bright and electric, with a pure core of fruit, pinpoint mousse and a textural attack, concluding with a long, saline finish. Drink it alongside the 2015, and it will illuminate its clarity and integration.
This report covers the recent and forthcoming releases from Louis Roederer, tasted with Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon in Reims earlier this year. Among these is the new Collection 245—a refined introduction to the house's evolving style, it's a reimagined cuvée that has replaced their Brut Premier. The focus of this wine has now shifted to highlighting the base vintage rather than producing a consistently uniform style year after year. Other featured wines include the latest Blanc de Blancs, Brut Vintage and Brut Vintage Rosé and various vintages of Cristal and Cristal Rosé. Among these is an embarrassment of riches from which to select, such as the precise and incisive 2016 Cristal, as well as the extraordinarily pure 2013 Cristal and 2013 Cristal Rosé. Both 2013 releases are now available in magnums (spoiler: they are even more complete than the standard-size bottles, combining intensity with a graceful texture). The Coteaux Champenois continues its upward trajectory, and the 2022 vintage, shaped by a warm and dry growing season, is well worth seeking out as well.
It is difficult to pinpoint what is most impressive about Cristal—the fact that these Champagnes are crafted from meticulously farmed vineyards or that they are produced in volumes that proves high quality is not exclusive to small growers but can also be achieved on a larger scale. Cristal and Cristal Rosé, based on organically certified farming since 2012, continue to deliver outstanding performances, maintaining their reputation as two of the finest cuvées in the Grande Marque category.
While I generally favor a lower dosage—since it can occasionally assert itself on the finish, particularly as the wine warms—Lecaillon emphasizes that this very dosage is what will sustain these Champagnes far into the future. Notably, the dosage has been reduced in recent years, and contemporary vintages exhibit greater clarity than ever before.
Under the stewardship of Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, who oversees both winemaking and viticulture, Roederer has embarked on what could be described as a viticultural renaissance, which for Roederer means pursuing massal selection, harvesting fully ripened fruit, planting fruit trees and encouraging biodiversity in and around their vineyards, all with the goal of leaving the land in better condition than when they found it. Of Roederer’s 242 hectares, which supply most of their needs, an impressive 50% is now certified organic and is also managed following biodynamic practices. The only cuvée that includes some purchased fruit is the NV Collection. It's worth noting, however, that Cristal Rosé is sourced from only four lieux-dits, while Cristal is informed by approximately 45 plots. The story of each wine is told in greater detail in the accompanying tasting notes.
For more in-depth information on Cristal and the maison’s methodology, I recommend referring to William Kelley’s article, "Champagne: Louis Roederer’s Cristal 1996-2012," in the March 2020 Week 1 issue of The Wine Advocate.

This has wonderfully pure fruit aromas, such as peaches, Asian pears and golden apples, alongside lemon curd, gingerbread, chalk and jasmine. Rock salt and oyster shells follow on the palate, which is so seamless that you scarcely notice the super-fine bubbles. It’s concentrated yet gentle at the same time, with impressive resolution and integration of all components. Salty and creamy at the very-long finish. Fantastic! 58% pinot noir and 42% chardonnay. Drink or hold.

From: Champagne: The 2024 Spring Preview and Fall Additions (Dec 2024)
The 2016 Cristal is bright, aromatic and nicely lifted. Citrus peel white flowers, mint and a touch of chamomile all grace this understated, wonderfully refined edition of Cristal. Light on its feet and super-refined, the 2016 is exquisite in its understated beauty. I can’t wait to see how the 2016 ages and won’t be surprised it gains a bit of weight in bottle, as Cristal so often does. The blend is 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay, so a touch more Chardonnay than the norm. Of the 45 parcels that make up the Cristal domaine, just 32 were used for the blend. Verzy and Verzenay dominate the Pinots, then Aÿ. Avize takes the lead in the Chardonnays, followed by Mesnil and Cramant. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.

Roederer remains one of the most dynamic houses in Champagne. This year Roederer is releasing five vintages in their new Rosé Late Release program. These are original disgorgements but bottled with one gram less of dosage (8 grams per liter) than the original releases. That means that, at a minimum, the broad outline for this program was conceived thirty years ago, a reminder of the amount of time that is required in Champagne from conceptualization to commercial release.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
I have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far - once as part of an extensive vertical I will be reporting on shortly, and then later in my office. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison, the 2015 is rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textural intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit, spice, ginger, chalk and dried flowers abound in a Champagne endowed with tremendous aromatic presence in a style that offers notable richness, but lighter than vintages such as 2012. There is a bit of the savoriness that is such a signature of the year, but it is nicely integrated in the wine’s fabric. Two later tastings in my office strongly suggest the 2015 has already started to shut down a bit, which is a shame, as it may be hard to read for some time to come. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2022.
This is a compelling set of new releases from Roederer and long-time Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon. The 2015 Cristal is one of the more intriguing Champagnes in what has turned out to be a tricky vintage overall for a region that is struggling to adapt to the new reality of climate change and its impact on achieving phenolic maturity in the field. “We strive to reach the classic measurement of 100 days between flowering and harvest, and that requires waiting to pick,” Lécaillon explains. “At the same time, acidity does not really exist anymore in Champagne, so we have to find a way to reinvent it,” he adds, a bit ironically.
The 2015 is an unusual Cristal in that it includes fruit from all 45 parcels at the domaine, which has not happened since 2002. Pinots from Verzy and Verzenay, north-facing sites in the Montagne de Reims, featured quite a bit, adding energy to the blend. As always, there is no malolactic fermentation. About 25-30% of the lots were fermented in oak. In warmer vintages, Lécaillon bumps up the wood a bit to add phenolic intensity, which he describes as “stretching out the finish” and adding freshness.

Louis Roederer is a prestigious champagne producer based in the Champagne region of France. The House of Louis Roederer is known for its commitment to quality, traditional winemaking methods and its signature cuvée, Cristal.
History of Louis Roederer
Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 by a German wine merchant named Louis Roederer. The house started as a wine shop and became involved in the production of Champagne in the early 19th century. In 1827, Louis Roederer's cousin, Adolphe Roederer, took over the business. Adolphe played a crucial role in the expansion and growth of this producer. He traveled extensively to build relationships with European courts, including the Russian Imperial Court. In 1876, Louis Roederer created the iconic Cristal Champagne. It was originally produced exclusively for the Russian Tsars and was presented in a crystal clear bottle, which is the origin of the name 'Cristal'. Louis Roederer remained a family business for many years. However, in 1932 the Rouzaud family, relatives of the Roederer family, took over the house. The Rouzaud family owns and manages Louis Roederer to this day. Like many companies in Champagne, Louis Roederer faced challenges during the World Wars, including damage to their cellars. Despite these difficulties, they persevered and continued to produce exceptional champagne. Louis Roederer has a long history of producing high quality champagnes. They are known for their traditional winemaking methods, including hand harvesting, fermentation in oak barrels and long-term aging in cellars.
Cristal
One of the most famous Champagnes produced by Louis Roederer is Cristal. Created in 1876, Cristal is a prestigious and luxurious cuvée originally produced for the Russian Tsars. It is typically a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes with Chardonnay as the dominant grape variety. They are known for their exceptional quality, elegance and aging potential. It is known for its fine, persistent bubbles, a rich and creamy texture and a harmonious balance of flavors and aromas. Cristal is highly regarded by wine critics and collectors worldwide. It consistently receives high ratings and is considered one of the best Champagnes available. Bottles of Cristal are often collected and aged for special occasions. The clear crystal bottle in which Cristal was originally presented was changed to a conventional bottle design in the early 20th century. This change was made to protect the taste and quality of the wine, as the clear glass was found to be sensitive to light exposure. Today, Cristal is usually bottled in an elegant, clear glass bottle with gold packaging.
Louis Roederer's vineyards
Louis Roederer owns and manages vineyards in the best Champagne crus, including the Grand Cru vineyards of Verzenay, Verzy and Ay, among others. These vineyards supply the grapes for their exceptional wines.
Assortment by Louis Roederer
In addition to Cristal, Louis Roederer produces a range of other champagnes, including Brut Premier, Vintage Brut, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs. These wines suit a wide range of preferences and occasions. Louis Roederer's Champagnes have received critical acclaim from wine critics and publications around the world and are considered some of the finest Champagnes produced in the region.
