How does this wine taste?
How full and heavy the wine feels in your mouth, like the difference between skimmed milk and cream. More alcohol, sugar and oak ageing make a wine fuller.
The drying, grippy feel on your gums and tongue, as with strong tea. It comes from the skins and seeds of black grapes and from oak, and softens with age.
How much sugar you taste, from dry to sweet. Fruity is not the same as sweet: a dry wine can taste of ripe fruit.
How fresh and juicy the wine is: acidity makes your mouth water. High acidity tastes lively and refreshing, low acidity soft and round.

Log inThe Rioja by Benjamin de Rothschild y Vega Sicilia Macan. The color is ruby red with a very fruity nose in the nose, but the great thing is that everything is there but nothing stands out!! In the mouth, the Macan is solid and tight without being really heavy. It has really velvety tannins.

Pablo Álvarez from Vega Sicilia decided to participate in a new project in Rioja. Already in the year 2000 they started (secretly) with the purchase of very old vineyards in Sonsierra, part of the Rioja Alavesa. The Swiss banker Benjamin de Rothschild was found as a partner. Not the Rothschild of Lafite or Mouton, but of LCF Edmond de Rothschild Asset Management, owner of Château Clarke and Château Malmaison in Listrac and Moulis respectively, partner in the South African Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons and also in possession of vineyards in Argentina.
Álvarez and de Rothschild invested approximately 26 million euros in, among other things, the purchase and construction of 110 hectares of vineyards and the construction of a new production facility in Samaniego. A large part (65ha) of the vineyards is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, where the people are known as Maçanes. It is therefore no coincidence that the new company bears the name Macán.
Macán markets two wines, the Macán and the Macán Clásico, both a 100% Tempranillo full-blooded Rioja. The Clásico is the base wine, the Mácan the prestigecuvée, avoiding the term Reserva.
Macan is made from 100% tempranillo from a 30 year old vineyard. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak (70% new and 30% used). After this upbringing, it has had a further 3 years of bottle aging. This macan is the top model in which people consciously choose to avoid the too often misused term Reserva. The color is ruby red with a very fruity nose in the nose, but the great thing is that everything is there but nothing stands out!! In the mouth, the Macan is solid and tight without being really heavy. It has really velvety tannins, very balanced and very elegant. A top Rioja but in the end this also comes from Vega Sicilia and Rothschild.

2017 was a very challenging year, as most of their vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja were affected by frost, unlike others in nearby Laguardia. Not only was it frost, but they also had hail later on in the season. Quantities suffered—they told me they lost 70% of the crop in Rioja that year—but they were happy about the quality of the 2017 Macán, being very careful with the fermentation and separating the press wine by quality. The 4,000-liter oak foudres helped to polish the tannins, and they used 50% new barrels. The élevage lasted 16 moths. It's a little riper than the Clásico from 2018 that I tasted next to it, with a little more alcohol (14.5%) and mellow acidity. It's clearly a weaker vintage, and the wine shows it: the fruit is a little ripe and shows some tiredness, like it's evolving at a faster pace. It has abundant, slightly rustic tannins. 40,400 bottles, 2,566 magnums and some larger formats produced. It was bottled in September 2019. Quantities reflect the low yields.
They had a new vinification chamber in 2016 when they added 4,000-liter oak foudres for the aging of the Macán range of the joint venture between Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia in Rioja. Production averages 300,000 bottles per year.
