Description
Rubinelli Vajol is the new superstar. The wine is authentic and not as sweetened as people often try to do. James suckling writes in his report about the Valpolicella: " Rubinelli Vajol Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2019, which comes from a producer that is arguably the new superstar of the style. " and from WineMag 2023, Rubinelli Vajol receives the maximum recognition: Italian Winery of the year 2023
The vineyards of the Italian winery Rubinelli Vajol are located in the heart of Valpolicella in the famous Veneto region. Ten hectares of vineyards in one piece of land define the "Cru VAJOL". With the five classic Valpolicella wines, the RUBINELLI family is the only producer of these. With the charming country house, the cellars, the village of Vajol, the landscape covered with vineyards demarcated by brick walls and sweetly decorated with olive trees, cherry blossoms and almond trees, the Rubinelli Vajol winery captures exactly the essence of the classic beauty of Valpolicella. The sublime wines of this winery contain a sweet secret: the grapes were stored for a time in the heart of Valpolicella, where they ripen slowly and peacefully in the valley, kissed by the sun and protected by the rolling hills.
The selected grapes are matured/dried in baskets for four months, after which they are fermented at a controlled temperature between January and February. Rubinelli then gives the wine plenty of time in large oak barrels for a period of at least 36 months and then the wine is bottle-aged for another 2 years before this top amarone comes onto the market. At Rubinelli they make authentic amarones with a beautiful freshness in which fruit dominates and not sugars.
In the glass, the Rubinelli Vajol Amarone della Valpolicella Classico has a crimson color with bright intense ruby red reflections. On the nose we get an immediate explosion of cherry, sour cherry, ripe red fruit, blueberry, undergrowth, orange peel and flowers mixed with elegant aromatic herbs, tobacco, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and pepper. After some time in the glass, the aromas evolve towards oriental spices. On the palate, the wine is perfectly balanced and rewards the palate with velvety warmth. Full bodied but supported by freshness and fine tannins and many amarones cannot say this. Fruit and spices keep coming back. The aftertaste is well balanced with intriguing mineral notes.
The Rubinelli Vajol Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a wine to enjoy and almost meditative. The wine is only made in the good years and all bottles are numbered. Without a doubt, it is excellent with stews such as an Italian brasato (roasted meat stewed in red wine) but in general it goes well with dishes with a high aromatic value. We advise you to open the bottle some time (2 hours) before serving or to decant it. The Rubinelli Amarone is what a good amarone should be. No excess of sugar but elegant fruit. Suckling also writes this in his review (94/100): ".....As always, this is an elegant Amarone.." Parker writes: "In fact, this Amarone is more tapered and streamlined than most"
Rubinelli Vajol's Amarone comes from the typical grape varieties for amarone, namely: 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, 5% Molinara and 5% Oseleta. The Grand Cru vineyards of Rubinelli are located in the Vajol area and are one of the most beautiful areas in the Veneto. In the Vajol the winery has a unique position because all vineyards are located around the winery (in contrast to many others (read most) that have plots throughout the area and the commercial Amarone wineries often do not have their own vineyards and buy the majority .
All grapes come exclusively from the fields around Corte Sant'Anna, this gives a special uniqueness to the wine and makes it unmistakable: wine born on tuff. This area was once the sea - imagine a sunny bay. The soil consists of marl formed between the Mesozoic era (150 million years ago) and the Tertiary era (60 million years ago) followed by the origin of the Alpine mountains. The soil is very calcareous, ideal for moderating the natural vigor of the vines. Limestone also has sponge-like properties: the ability to hold water for long periods of time, allowing it to pass through only when the plants need it. This always keeps the grapes well hydrated. The soil is thin but rich in organic matter which allows the vines to live in perfect nutritional balance. This harmony is reflected in the quality of the wines, which are always elegant and fully express, both in their aroma and on the palate, their rich polyphenolic multitude. Rubinelli Vajol wines are born in the ground before they reach the wine cellar; they are gifts of nature and of the formation of land structures in the Conca del Vajol.

The Rubinelli Vajol 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico hails from a warm and sunny vintage. The wine is 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, 10% Rondinella, 5% Molinara and 5% Oseleta that is aged in oak cask for 36 months. Production is 26,000 bottles. This 16%-alcohol wine is not too overdone in terms of mouthfeel and concentration. In fact, this Amarone is more tapered and streamlined than most, even thin. There are dried fruit aromas of blackberry, cassis, grilled herb and dark spice. There is a note of candied sweetness on the close.
Rubinelli Vajol traces its roots back to 1635. Nicola Scienza and his team have finished building a new winery carved into a hillside in order to use gravity flow in winemaking.

A very fresh and distinctive nose, offering clean dried red berries, together with some green olives and potpourri. Other savory nuances, such as nuts and flowers come through if you linger. Full-bodied with a lovely, controlled expansion of fruit and tannin on the palate, leading to a long, long finish. Super structure here. A well-crafted Amarone that will stand up to the test of time, but is so tempting now. Best ever from here? Drink or hold.
