2015 Redheads Studio Esulé Woman With Gun
This great wine, from Redhead's newest addition winemaker Dan Graham, is a rare blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc . A beautiful glass, not for nothing a 3-time gold medal winner, full of dense black fruit with an elegant structure and subtle French oak hint for complexity.
Like all wines from Redheads Studio, this special wine also has a story. Esulé is a story about the tragedy of modern times, about being an outcast from life and about abandonment. The victim is Cabernet, both the Sauvignon and Franc varieties, which has fallen out of favor and simply does not fit into the McLaren Vale fashion image. This Cabernet, formerly A-list classified crown bearer, now lives a fragmented life, wanders aimlessly and has to watch that Shiraz now sits on top of the throne. That is why this wine is an ode to the Cabernets, lest we forget that these outcasts are still of royal character. After all, it is not the Cabernets that have changed, but we ourselves. However, judging by the strength and intensity of the grapes, trendy or not, they are bound to be a precursor to the taste buds. That is why Redheads Studio is certainly not leaving the Cabernets; they defend it precisely through this beautiful red, which is the embodiment of elegance, class and finesse.
Both Cabernets are sourced near the ocean, where cooler temperatures bring out the intensely bright fruit and firm tannins to support the dense, ripe flavors. Fermentation with 'open-top', aging in pure French oak (Legrand) and all the handmade techniques we are used to from Redheads really complete this wine. This Esulé has an impressive depth of almost black-red. Creamy black fruit aromas with notes of oak. A wine with a velvety texture, intense blackcurrant and eucalyptus aromas of impressive length and a fresh note thanks to the elegant tannins.
Food recommendation from the winemakers: highly recommended with roasted venison with kale fries, game and steak patties or a vegetarian shepherd's pie with garlic mousse.
This wine has exciting cellar potential. Open the wine early and decant preferably, or give this Woman With Gun permission to only reveal her full 'tragedy' in about 5 years.
Redheads Studio winery is located in South Australia in the town of Tanuda, in the Barossa Valley where the dedicated team behind Redheads work tirelessly, from the vine to the bottle and beyond, to ensure the wines can always be in their best condition drunk.
It all started with a few Aussie winemakers who went to France to show the 'old hands' some new tricks there. Australian wine had conquered the world in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why Tony Laithwaite brought some Aussies to France. It was there that the very beginning of RedHead's new viticultural movement was laid.
In a small shed in McLaren Vale, a former Indian restaurant, some winemakers took on the challenge of making their dream come true: making beautiful, creative wines in small volumes with primary focus on quality.
They wanted to make wines without being bothered by all kinds of business worries, which resulted in an explosion of creativity and experiments.
Meanwhile, winery Redheads is making great international progress and they still give young talents the opportunity to let their creativity and talents loose on the best grapes in the region. Redheads Wines says of itself: “A free-spirited, movement liberating the best grapes from the premium labels to make wines with soul, character and personality”
