The Jacques Prieur winery

Maison Jacques Prieur is one of Burgundy's most established names. Founded in Meursault at the end of the nineteenth century, the estate has been linked to both the Prieur and Labruyère families ever since. This combination of tradition and contemporary vision has resulted in wines highly regarded by wine lovers and sommeliers. The vineyards are spread across some of the Côte d'Or's most prestigious appellations, including Musigny, Chambertin, and Montrachet. Over the past decades, the quality has been further refined under the guidance of winemaker Nadine Gublin. Her style focuses on precision, structure, and a perfect balance of fruit, tension, and length. The wines are known for their refinement and excellent aging potential.

Chambertin Grand Cru in the Côte de Nuits

Chambertin is one of Gevrey Chambertin's most famous Grand Cru vineyards. Its eastern-facing location ensures even ripening of the Pinot Noir. The soil consists of chalky clay with deep mineral layers, producing wines with intensity, depth, and aromatic complexity. Jacques Prieur's plots also include old vines of around sixty years old. This age contributes to lower yields and greater fruit concentration. The combination of old material and Chambertin's powerful signature creates a Grand Cru that is both expressive and precise.

The style of Jacques Prieur's red wines

Jacques Prieur's red wines are known for their elegant structure. The tannins are ripe and refined, the fruit is pure, and the wines have a remarkably long finish. The estate carefully ages in French oak, with Grand Cru wines receiving a high yet well-integrated proportion of new oak. The wines are never heavy, even in warm years. According to Nadine Gublin, this balance is achieved by paying attention to the natural acidity and through gentle and controlled extraction. The wines age beautifully and develop greater depth and complexity with age.

The 2015 Jacques Prieur Chambertin Grand Cru

The 2015 vintage is considered a ripe yet classic Burgundy vintage. Harvest took place in September under excellent conditions. The estate opted for complete destemming and used 70 percent new oak for aging. The grapes came partly from the neighboring Clos de Bèze and were highly concentrated due to the limited yield. According to both internal tasting notes and external assessments, the 2015 vintage is a powerful yet balanced one. The wine has an energetic structure supported by natural acidity. Compared to the Premier Cru of the same year, the Chambertin Grand Cru shows more balance, greater depth, and a more beautiful tension in the core of the fruit.

Vinification, maturation and further development potential

Fermentation proceeded without whole bunches and with gentle extraction in the first few days. This was followed by aging in oak barrels, which supported the dark fruit and mineral core. The old vines resulted in a concentrated wine that relies not on power but rather on finesse. The alcohol is remarkably moderate for a warm vintage. The wine already displays layers of tension and maturity but still has many years to go. With over fifteen years of bottle aging, it's fascinating to see how the wine develops bottle by bottle. Chambertin in a vintage like 2015 can continue to evolve for a long time, and it's always fascinating to see how the wine presents itself after this period.

Color, aroma and taste of the 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru

The wine opens with a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals black cherry, black currant, graphite, light smoke, and subtle earthy notes. This layering gradually builds in the glass, revealing the intensity of the old vines. On the palate, the wine is both light and bold. The dark berry aromas and mineral notes are supported by a beautiful, clean acidity. The texture is soft yet firm enough to age for many years. The finish is long and elegant with a building sweetness from ripe tannins. This is a Chambertin that combines power, balance, and length, and is expected to be enjoyed for a long time.

Based in Meursault since the 19th century, Domaine Jacques Prieur boasts one of the finest collections of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus in existence. Its 21 hectares of vineyards (11 ha of Pinot Noir and 10 ha of Chardonnay) include many prestigious terroirs, such as Grands Crus Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Corton-Charlemagne, Corton-Bressandes, Echézeaux, Clos Vougeot, Musigny, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze. That's a third of Burgundy's Grands Crus appellations.

Fourteen Premiers Crus complete this magnificent collection spread across Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Nine grands crus, fourteen premiers crus, three crus monopoles, a true pearl necklace.

Today, the Labruyère family is at the helm of this jewel of Burgundy, as well as owners of Château Rouget in Pomerol and Domaine Labruyère in Moulin-à-Vent. They work daily to make the most of this prestigious heritage. They are assisted by Martin Prieur, grandson of Jacques Prieur, who has lived and worked on the estate with his family since 1990. Now responsible, together with Edouard Labruyère, for the marketing of the Domaine's wines, Martin Prieur represents the link between past and present, because no one knows the history of the Domaine and its vineyards as well as he does.  Under the leadership of Daniel Godefroy, an experienced vineyard manager who knows each plot inside out, the Domaine has been following a "viticulture raisonnée" approach for many years. The work in the winery and cellar is supervised by the excellent oenologist Nadine Gublin. An expert in thoughtful and precise interventions in the winemaking process, she was awarded the title of Winemaker of the Year by the Revue du Vin de France in 1998.

Domaine Jacques Prieur produces white and red wines that are powerful and flavorful, figureheads of the great modern Burgundy, and is made entirely of Grands Crus and Premiers Crus (with the exception of Clos de Mazeray in Meursault, Monopole and emblematic Village Appellation).
