Description
Château Lynch-Bages: prestigious history and character
Château Lynch-Bages, classified as a Cinquième Grand Cru Classé in 1855, has been managed by the Cazes family since 1939. Over the generations, the work has been continuously refined, incorporating modern cellar techniques and sustainable vineyard practices, while still emphasizing the Pauillac terroir. Lynch-Bages is often considered a "Super Second"—a fifth cru with second-tier quality.
Location, terroir and climate
The vineyards are situated on a gravel plateau along the banks of the Gironde, with a subsoil of firm gravel and clay layers. This combination ensures excellent drainage, heat retention, and well-developed viticulture. The nearby water moderates temperature fluctuations and ensures even ripening – essential for the elegance and structure that characterize the appellation.
Blend, harvest and cellar work of 2015
The 2015 vintage is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. After manual selection by plot under the family's supervision, separate fermentation and 18 months of aging in barriques (approximately 65–75% new oak) follow. This approach results in a wine that combines concentration and finesse, without becoming overripe or heavy.
Tasting notes: intensity, structure and balance
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with violet hues. The nose reveals complex aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, violet, graphite, tobacco, and subtle spices like sage and saffron.
The palate is medium to full-bodied, with firm yet silky tannins, lively acidity, and a ripe fruit palate of blackcurrant and cherry. The structure is powerful and layered, with a long, mineral finish and an elegant, fresh aftertaste. The texture is supple and refined, just right for both now and in continued development.

Very classic styled Lynch with pretty ripe fruit and tannin balanced. Full body, firm and chewy tannins yet polished and refined. Alcohol and fruit balance are lower than other top years and give this wine freshness and energy.

From: Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)
The 2015 Lynch-Bages has an intense nose of black fruit, cedar and pencil box aromas. This is muted at first but it only takes a few swirls to unleash the aromas. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced, with grainy tannins, real depth and grip. This has dispensed with some of its surliness and there is now more brightness toward the finish. The 2015 is excellent.

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
