Winery
Château Giscours belongs to the historic elite of Margaux and has held the status of Troisième Grand Cru Classé since the famous classification of 1855. The château is located in the southern Médoc and boasts one of the largest contiguous vineyards in the appellation. The combination of centuries-old tradition, meticulous vineyard management, and continuous investment has ensured that Giscours has once again joined the absolute elite of Bordeaux in recent decades. The wines are known for their refinement, aromatic complexity, and elegant structure, typical of great Margaux.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards of Château Giscours are situated on the characteristic deep gravel ridges of Margaux. These gravelly soils provide excellent drainage and retain heat during the day, allowing Cabernet Sauvignon to ripen optimally. Beneath the gravel layers lie limestone and clay, which contribute to freshness and balance. Thanks to the proximity of the Gironde, the vineyards benefit from a temperate climate with relatively small temperature fluctuations. This terroir produces wines of great finesse, a refined tannin structure, and great aging potential.
Grapes and vineyard management
Grand Vin is traditionally dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and smaller quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are harvested plot by plot at the optimal moment of ripeness. Low yields, strict selection, and sustainable vineyard practices result in fruit with high concentration and a clear expression of terroir. Only the best batches are ultimately included in the Grand Vin.
Vinification and aging
After manual harvesting, the grapes are carefully selected and vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation takes place under controlled temperatures, followed by a long maceration to optimally extract color, aromas, and refined tannins. Subsequently, the wine ages for approximately eighteen months in French oak barriques, a significant portion of which is renewed annually. During this aging process, sur lie aging contributes to extra texture, complexity, and a beautiful integration of the wood.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep garnet color. On the nose, blackcurrant, blackberries, and red berries dominate, followed by aromas of cedarwood, roses, graphite, and pencil shavings. As the wine opens up, nuances of tobacco, spices, and subtle earthy notes emerge. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a powerful core of dark fruit, firm yet fine-grained tannins, and excellent freshness. The finish is long, refined, and harmonious, with great elegance and precision.
Style and character
Château Giscours is a textbook example of classic Margaux. The wine combines power with elegance and possesses an aromatic finesse characteristic of the appellation. The 2015 vintage displays a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, refined tannins, and fresh acidity. As a result, the wine is more accessible than some younger vintages, while simultaneously possessing sufficient structure to age for many more years.
Volume
2015 ranks among the best Bordeaux vintages of the past decade. A warm growing season with excellent harvest conditions resulted in perfectly ripe grapes with great concentration and balance. Château Giscours took full advantage of these conditions and produced a Margaux with great depth, refinement, and aging potential. The alcohol content is approximately 14%. The drinking window runs from 2019 to 2039, during which the wine will continue to develop in the coming years.
Food and wine pairings
This Margaux pairs excellently with tournedos, rack of lamb, venison, duck breast, and other refined meat dishes. Veal, mushrooms, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses also make excellent combinations. Thanks to its elegant structure, the wine suits both classic French dishes and modern gastronomic preparations.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Giscours opens with expressive cassis, blackberry and red currants on the nose with touches of cedar chest, roses and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied with a good core of muscular fruit and firm, grainy tannins, it finishes long.

Vintage
2015
This is holding very well after 10 years now. Plush but discreet and pretty complete now, with complexity from many aspects. Deep, savory cassis, tobacco and berries, with a touch of citrus, graphite and roasted spices. Medium- to full-bodied, with ripe juicy fruit. The mid-palate is still dense, with fine-grained tannins that are still tight-wound in a long finish. Obviously a very good year for Giscours. A blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 5% petit verdot. Ready now, but this should hold very well for another eight to ten years. Tasted in a vertical of 10 vintages.

From: Bordeaux 2015 At Age Ten (Jun 2025)
The 2015 Giscours has a well-defined nose with vibrant red berry fruit, violet, iris flower and hints of camphor developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with plush tannins, yet this is finely chiseled with wonderful tension toward the persistent and precise finish. This is excellent and it aligns with the impressive showing in October 2024. Tasted blind at the 2015 Bordeaux Ten-Year-On tasting at Farr Vintners.

Giscours was in a dubious state when Nicolas Tari acquired it in 1954. Substantial investments followed and quality improved by leaps and bounds. In 1995 Giscours came into the possession of the Dutch grocer (supermarkets to Super de Boer and Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also invested heavily here, just like at his other Château du Tertre property and further improved the quality through a rigorous replanting and replanting program. The cellars were shed and new equipment was purchased. Today Giscours is again “the grand seigneur” it once was and worthy of a 3rd cru. With 200 ha of which 80 ha of vineyard one of the greatest assets in the Médoc.
