Description
Clos du Château is its own "Monopole" plot nestled in the heart of Santenay le Haut in the gardens of the Château de la Crée. "Clos du Château" faces south-east, with vigorous vines where yields must be absolutely controlled for good maturity and so they have gone back to Cordon de Royat style pruning to obtain smaller bunches.
The generous wines of this sunny vintage stand out. Things moved very quickly in 2015, both in the vineyards and in the winery. Flowering took place at the beginning of June, followed by veraison in mid-July, with the start of the harvest at the end of August. The weather dictated the pace, resulting in beautiful grapes, the foundation of a great vintage. The wine has aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, 26% of which are new oak. In addition, the wine has also had a long bottle aging in the beautiful cellars of the Château. As with all wines, La Crée releases its wines much later than most Burgundy wineries.
First, the nose of the Santenay Rouge Clos du Château focuses on toasted characteristics and then the aromas of red fruits come with a hint of cedar and tobacco. The palate reveals crunchy cherry notes, pleasant with integrated tannins and some smoky characteristics very well balanced. A delicious glass with crispy roast poultry, aromatic poultry dishes (glazed or caramelized), Chaource, Brie de Meaux, Tomme, Reblochon, Mont d'Or...
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you come to pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking space. Click here for our address and contact information
ABOUT SANTENAY
Located just south of Chassagne Montrachet, Santenay is the southernmost village of Burgundy's famous "Cote D'or" ("Gold Coast") region. Santenay's etymology is most likely connected to the word "Sanctus", which refers to a sacred place before the Christian era. The appellation, with a total of 140 ha of planted vines, consists of three areas, one next to Chassagne, one around the village and one just south of the village. It is mainly a Pinot Noir appellation these days, but the Chardonnay reveals high potential there.

This is really acidity-driven with zingy, vivid aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with an earthy undertone. Orange peel and bright acidity at the end. Rather wild. Drink or hold.

Today, the Château's vineyards encompass seven rare Premier Cru blocks located entirely along the famous Côte d'Or escarpment, home to some of the world's most legendary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. The Château de la Crée estate consists of 25 hectares of prime vineyard blocks in Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay and Maranges and all plantations are located on Premier Cru sites. Biodynamic farming practices are employed in all vineyards to encourage optimal terroir expression and ensure soil and plant health.
Ken and Grace Evenstad, founders and owners of Domaine Serene Winery, came full circle in their passion for great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when they bought the respected Burgundian wine estate Château de la Crée in April 2015.
“Owning and farming legendary vineyards in Burgundy is a dream come true for us,” says Ken Evenstad. “We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make our own wines from famous vineyards like Morgeot in Chassagne-Montrachet, Clos des Angles in Volnay, and La Garenne in Puligny-Montrachet where world class wines have been made for centuries.”
Since their first vintage in 1990, The Evenstads have produced world-class award-winning wines. Recently, the Domaine Serene 2010 Evenstad Reserve Pinot Noir and the 2014 Evenstad Reserve Chardonnay were placed in the top 3 of Wines of the World by Wine Spectator Magazine. such high regard by the publication. Château de la Crée uses a collaborative approach to winemaking that spans decades of experience under the guidance of Domaine Serene founders, Grace and Ken Evenstad. Since 2017, our winemaker Pablo Bosch and the viticulture team have been working closely with the team at Evenstads and Domaine Serene to implement techniques in the vineyard and cellar to improve wine quality. The Château de la Crée team strives to continuously combine innovative winemaking techniques to highlight the best qualities of the legendary terroir found only in Burgundy. While great wines start with great vineyards, no detail is left unexplored during the winemaking process. There is no cutback in the continuous quest to make the highest quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the world.
