Gramona Winery
Gramona is one of the leading producers of sparkling wines in Spain and is located in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the heart of Penedès. The family business has been working for generations with a strong focus on quality, long aging, and terroir. Gramona was one of the initiators of Corpinnat, a quality label that stands for origin, manual harvesting, and long bottle aging. Gramona wines distinguish themselves through their precision, complexity, and refinement. More information about the winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Penedès, in northeastern Spain, where a Mediterranean climate prevails influenced by the sea and the mountains. This results in warm days and relatively cool nights, contributing to a good balance between ripeness and freshness.
The soils consist primarily of calcareous clay and sand, which provides structure and fine minerality in the wines. The combination of climate and soil provides the basis for complex sparkling wines with tension and length.
Vineyards and grape varieties
Celler Batlle is one of Gramona's top cuvées and is made exclusively from grapes from selected plots with old vines. The focus is on low yields and optimal ripeness.
The wine is made from a blend of primarily Xarel·lo and Macabeo, two grapes that provide structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity. Xarel·lo delivers body and aging potential, while Macabeo adds finesse and floral notes.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. The base wines are vinified separately to preserve the expression of each plot.
After the second fermentation in the bottle, a very long maturation on the lees follows, which often amounts to more than 100 months. This prolonged aging results in exceptional complexity and a very fine mousse.
The wine is bottled as Brut Nature, without added dosage, ensuring that its purity and precision are fully preserved.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep golden yellow color with a very fine and persistent mousse. On the nose, complex aromas of ripe citrus, apple, dried fruit, and almond emerge, complemented by brioche, toast, and light spiciness.
On the palate, the wine is powerful and layered, with a creamy texture and a very fine mousse. The fresh acidity provides tension and balance, while the long aging ensures depth and complexity.
The finish is long and dry, with notes of nuts, brioche, and subtle minerality. The wine combines ripeness with precision and remains elegant despite its intensity.

The older 2014 Celler Batlle Brut Nature is the first vintage of this wine from 75% Xarel.lo and 25% Macabeo from the Font Jui vineyard to be offered with zero added sugar (as a brut nature). It fermented and matured in bottle with the lees under a natural cork that gives the wine a spicier twist (curry) from the old solera rancio wine added. 2014 was a cooler year with more rain (even more than 2013), and they implemented some changes, mainly the zero dósage in the wine, with no added sugar, which seems to have improved even the texture of the wine. It's super tasty, spicy and dry. I think this has to be the finest vintage of Celler Batlle so far. 7,000 bottles produced. It was disgorged in October 2023, nine years after the harvest. There will be some changes from 2015, produced from a specific lieu-dit or "paraje."
The very sad news at Gramona for those who had not heard, was the tragical death of Xavier Gramona in an accident at the winery in August 2023. That triggered a reorganization of the family winery, with his brother Jaume Gramona taking the role of president, Jaume's son, Roc Gramona, being named viticulture and vinification director and Xavier's son, Leonard Gramona, as market director. They had already started in 2018, but the circumstances have accelerated the changes. We will see more subtle changes in future years (more aging under cork, refermentation with fresh must...).
They never stop and, in 2024, are completing the soil studies of their vineyards, some of which are being transformed into gobelets from being trellised, French varieties being gradually replaced by local ones, changing the density, and the new ones are being planted following the key line method. They also purchased a further seven hectares of vineyards. They own 65 hectares and buy grapes from 100 to 130 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards from the association Alianzas por la Tierra for their Imperial and La Cuvée bottlings. They produce 750,000 bottles of Corpinnat sparkling wine.

The very dynamic family business Gramona has existed since 1881, currently the 5th generation of mainly 150 ha own vineyards makes formidable sparkling wines. Traditional, but using modern technology. Since the opening of the new Bodega in 2006 just outside the village, Gramona is also technically completely ready for the coming years. In a Research and Development program, research is conducted at a very high level into climate change, ecological viticulture, sustainability and everything related to the formation and preservation of the mousse. The oenologist Jaume Gramona, who runs the company with his cousin Xavier, teaches at the University of Tarragona. Gramona has a low yield per hectare for Cava producers. In the summer, a green harvest is done, with an excess of bunches being cut away. The company makes its own yeasts and liqueur d'expédition in a more than a hundred years old solera system. Gramona's stock is about 1.5 million bottles. The Cava market is dominated by large houses with huge volumes. Top companies like Gramona have a completely different philosophy and work exclusively on quality. Currently, they have three locations in Sant Sadurni for the production of their wines.
Gramona is, first and foremost, always concerned with maximum quality in the wines and champagnes. This aim is reflected in every moment and in every step of the process (pruning, harvesting, production, selection). This ethos is conveyed in the coat of arms: "Viti, Vini, Vitae": the vine, wine, life, a synthesis of our history. As a company with a long tradition , respect for the area and nature is of paramount importance. At Gramona they use the exceptional terroir and the experience in the traditional production ("Champenois") to produce high-quality and, above all, very elegant Cavas.
