Gaja Winery
Gaja is one of Italy's most influential wineries and has played a significant role in Barbaresco's international reputation. Founded in 1859 in the village of Barbaresco, the estate, under the leadership of Angelo Gaja, became one of Piedmont's iconic wines. Through stricter vineyard selection, lower yields, and meticulous vinification, Gaja significantly raised the bar for Nebbiolo. Today, the new generation, led by Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni Gaja, is at the helm, but the philosophy remains unchanged: to express the character of Barbaresco's finest cru vineyards as purely as possible.
2014 Gaja Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn
Sorì Tildìn, along with Costa Russi and Sorì San Lorenzo, is one of Gaja's renowned single-vineyard Barbarescos. Located above Costa Russi at an altitude of approximately 260 meters, the vineyard is renowned for its combination of finesse, aromatic complexity, and structure. The vines average around 45 years old and grow on calcareous clay and marl soils that give Nebbiolo both elegance and concentration.
The 2014 vintage
2014 was a relatively cool year in Piedmont, but a warm end to the growing season still ensured sufficient ripening. The wines from this vintage are characterized by freshness, aromatic precision, and clear structure. Sorì Tildìn, in this vintage, primarily displays elegance and finesse, with a refined balance of fruit, minerality, and tannins.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a bright ruby red color with light garnet hues. The nose opens with refined aromas of cranberry, blackberry, and red currant, complemented by floral notes of lavender. This is followed by more complex nuances of cedar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and subtle smoky minerality.
Elegant and layered on the palate, with vibrant acidity and a beautiful balance between fruit and structure. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, giving the wine both power and finesse. The fruit is bright and precise, with notes of red berries and herbs. The finish is long, mineral, and savory with a clear Nebbiolo signature.
Reviews and reputation
This vintage received 94 points from The Wine Advocate. Monica Larner describes the wine as a particularly elegant and refined Barbaresco with polished fruit notes and subtle spicy and mineral nuances. James Suckling awarded it 96 points, highlighting its vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity, and long, savory finish. According to the review, the wine already shows charm, but further bottle aging will bring additional depth and complexity.
Storage capacity
Thanks to its fresh structure and refined tannins, this Barbaresco has excellent aging potential. The wine can continue to develop for many years and is expected to reach its optimal drinking window between approximately 2020 and 2045.

This is a wine of profound elegance and grace. The 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is fine and deeply finessed, with long and polished berry notes that are enhanced by mild spice and smoky mineral notes. The wine starts off slowly and subtly. You can follow its evident progression as it opens and evolves quickly in the glass. In fact, of Gaja's three single-vineyard expressions, this wine is the most fluid and changing. The tannins are fine and nicely integrated to give the wine power, grace and staying power.

The nose has it all here with fresh cranberry character, brambleberries and lavender intermingled with darker, more complex notes of cedar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Full body, so much vibrant acidity, tangy fruit, expansive yet tight tannins and a long, savory finish. Profound minerality. Delicious now but better in 2020.

From: 2014 Barbaresco: An October Surprise (Oct 2017)
Sweet rose petal, mint, chiseled red-toned fruit and chalk give the 2014 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn its sculpted, brilliant personality. All the elements are in the right place. A wine of translucent energy and weightless elegance, the Sorì Tildìn is hauntingly beautiful today. A host of floral notes and red berry fruit infuse the persistent, chiseled finish in this fabulous Barbaresco. As it so often is, the Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a wine of pure charm and seduction.
- By Antonio Galloni on August 2017
The Gaja family's 2014 Barbarescos are more than worthy follow ups to the stellar 2013s. The 2014s also show a bit more stylistic cohesion throughout the range than was the case with the 2013s. Overall, the 2014s are defined by their energy, tension and brilliant personalities. As good as Gaja's cru wines are, the straight Barbaresco - which is a blend of many top sites - is as good or nearly as good as those wines. It is also much more accessibly priced, even if none of these wines can be defined as inexpensive. Sadly, yields are down 35% across the board for the 2014s.

The history of winery Gaja starts in 1859, the year in which Giovanni Gaja, a local grape grower in Barbaresco, Piemonte, founded a wine company under his own name. A generation later, it is Angelo, grandfather of the current owner, who continues to make wine with the same determination as his father. He is supported in this by Clotilde Rey with whom he marries in 1905. They teach their scion Giovanni named after his grandfather so that as a winemaker you should not make any concessions; nothing should be at the expense of the quality of the wine.
In 1961 Giovannis son Angelo works in the family business. After graduating as an economist from the University of Turin and graduating from the School of Viticulture & Oenology in Alba, the young Angelo left abroad for an internship at wine farms in Bordeaux, Burgundy, along the Rin and in California. Full of fresh ideas, he had now returned to his native Piemonte. When Angelo Gaja took over his parents' company in 1970, he asked his old classmate and winemaker Guido Rivella to assist him. Together they implement a number of revolutionary changes for the region. For example, they sometimes reduce yields per hectare by up to half the number of liters allowed, they experiment with vinification methods, the planting of new - both red and white - grape varieties and pioneering ripening techniques. The results are astonishing and Gaja conquers the world with his beautiful Barbaresco's - the company's flagship.
The nebbiolo grapes for the Barbaresco of Gaja traditionally came from different vineyards. Angelos' father, grandfather and his father did just that before. Although young Angelo would not end this tradition, he launched a new line of Barbaresco's from a single vineyard. Interest in these experimental single vinyard wines became more and more popular. As a proponent of a dynamic, purely quality-oriented wine culture, the brilliant winemaker decides from 1996 to completely break with what he considers to be a conservative and restrictive Italian designation of origin. Only his traditional Barbaresco is still on the market as a prestigious DOCG. He deliberately 'declassifies' all other red single vineyard wines into regional Langhe Nebbiolo DOC. These are the Sorì San Lorenzo, the Sorì Tildìn and the Costa Russi. Gajas Barolo Sperss also underwent the same name change. With the exception of the Dagromis Barolo DOCG, Sito Moresco and Conteisa de Langhe also bear DOC. Langhe DOC is also on the label of his white toppers from Piemonte, the Rossj-Bass, Alteni di Brassica and Gaia & Rey. After all, for Gaja the abbreviation does not guarantee good quality of a wine but the name of the producer.
