Description
History of Errázuriz and the Las Pizarras project
Founded in 1870, Viña Errázuriz is considered a pioneer in the Chilean wine world. With its Las Pizarras project in Aconcagua Costa, the house focuses on producing world-class, terroir-driven wines. The name refers to the slate-rich soils ('pizarras') that contribute to the mineral style of the wines.
About the Las Pizarras Chardonnay
This Chardonnay comes from plots just 12 km from the Pacific Ocean. The cool coastal climate and stony, poor soils create precision, tension, and minerality. Only a limited quantity is bottled annually, harvested entirely by hand, and vinified with care.
Grapes, harvest and vinification
The grapes are pressed as whole bunches. Fermentation takes place with natural yeasts in French oak barriques, some of which are new. The wine then matures on the lees for 10 to 13 months, with partial malolactic fermentation. This results in an elegant, structured, and vibrant style.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a clear, light golden color. The nose reveals citrus, white peach, brioche, wet stones, and a hint of smoke. The palate is taut and mineral with high acidity, energetic citrus fruit, a creamy texture, and a noticeably salty finish. Pure, dry, and long.

I cannot think of any commercial Chardonnay on slate, so I was really curious to taste this new 2014 Aconcagua Costa "Las Pizarras" Chardonnay, which was sourced from the cool, coastal part of the Aconcagua Valley. They selected the fruit from the vines growing on slate-rich (schist) soils in their Manzanar vineyard. The whole clusters were pressed and the juice was left to settle for some 24 hours before it was put into French oak barrels to ferment with indigenous yeasts; 20% of the barrels were new, 50% were second use and the rest quite neutral, three-year-old ones. Sixty percent of the volume went through malolactic fermentation. The wine matured in barrique for 14 months before bottling. In an ideal world, this would be the 1er Cru, the Aconcagua Costa would be the village, and one day they should identify their Grand Cru. The profile is austere and there is nothing tropical; there's not a lot of fruit and in fact, there are more aromas of nuts, spices and definitively something earthy, mineral, marine -- almost saline -- with a low pH, marked acidity and restrained alcohol. The palate is terribly tasty and very dry; it really makes you salivate in a way that made me think of a Chablis (and oysters!). Groundbreaking marine and slate Chardonnay, bravo! I'd love to see this wine in ten years. 2,410 bottles produced.
Tasting the Errázuriz line up is always exciting ,as they are exploring the coastal, fresher parts of their vineyards, separating plots and vinifying them separately. Part of this search resulted in the creation of two groundbreaking wines from slate soils, a terroir still to be explored and exploited in Chile. The slate (or schist) wines show subdued minerality and a different character, and while the Pinot Noir is very good, the Chardonnay really excels. The team of Eduardo Chadwick and Francisco Baetting are showing clockwork precision with better wines each vintage. They are all highly recommended.

(made with 13 percent whole clusters and raised for 16 months in French oak barrels, 20 percent of them new; pH 3.2) Bright, slightly hazy yellow. Mineral-accented aromas of pear nectar, Meyer lemon, iodine and chamomile take on hints of smoky lees and anise with air. Impressively concentrated and seamless in texture, offering palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit and toasted brioche flavors sharpened by a smoky mineral nuance. Finishes sappy, minerally and extremely long; resonating citrus zest and dusty mineral notes add lift and focus. This is one of the most impressive Chardonnays from Chile that I can recall.

Chile deserves the top prize of all 'new' wine countries. Mainly due to the fact that the wines of this country have found a connection with the taste of many wine lovers, wherever in the world, at a record pace. There are of course special reasons for this success. The climate and soil type are ideal here and the classic European grape varieties were already present. Yet it is mainly thanks to the vision of people like Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz that these benefits were so quickly translated into resounding success. Exactly 140 years ago, Maximiano Errázuriz planted his vineyard in Panquehue, at the foot of the highest mountain in the Andes chain. The cool fall winds, proximity to the Aconcagua River and annual rainfall of only 25 cm make this an ideal area for wine growing. His great-grandson Eduardo Chadwick-Errázuriz has added a number of plots since 1990; they are planted with the grape varieties that best suit the specific soil and microclimate. As a result, in addition to the classic cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, the merlot, shiraz and carmenère also benefit from this earthly paradise for wine growing. Viña Errázuriz has since grown to become the absolute top of Chilean wine producers.
