Château Latour: a legend in the Médoc wine region

Located in the heart of the Médoc wine region, approximately 50 km northwest of Bordeaux, Château Latour is known as the cradle of the legendary Bordeaux vineyards. The Château's main terroir, l'Enclos, overlooks the Gironde estuary, which has created geological complexity over the centuries and ensures a mild climate every day. Since 1993, under the management of the Pinault family, the owner of the estate, significant changes have been made to ensure the excellence of Château Latour's wines.

Prominently located in the heart of the Médoc wine region, close to Bordeaux, Château Latour represents the rich history and heritage of Bordeaux vineyards. This renowned winery, famous for its exquisite terroir l'Enclos, offers a unique climate and geological complexity thanks to the nearby Gironde estuary.

Commitment to Excellence among the Pinault Family

Since 1993, the Pinault family, owners of the Château Latour estate, have taken important steps to ensure the quality and excellence of their wines. This commitment to quality has led to significant changes in viticultural practices, including the move to organic viticulture.

Les Forts de Latour is the second wine from the famous Château Latour, a Premier Cru Classé winery in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. The "late release" of the 2014 vintage of Les Forts de Latour is an interesting offering because Château Latour employs the rare strategy of releasing some of their wines later, after additional maturation in their cellars. This ensures that the wine is in optimal drinking condition at the time of release.

About Château Latour

Château Latour is one of the most prestigious wineries in Bordeaux, known for its wines of exceptional quality and longevity. The estate has a long history dating back to the 14th century and has been recognized as a Premier Cru Classé since its 1855 classification.

Les Forts de Latour

Les Forts de Latour was first produced in 1966 and is considered one of the best second wines of the Bordeaux region. It often offers excellent value for money, as it receives the same care and attention as the Grand Vin, but is made from grapes that did not go into the first wine.

The 2014 Vintage

The 2014 vintage in Bordeaux is generally considered a classic year, with wines showing good structure, freshness and ripe fruit. For Pauillac, and therefore also for Les Forts de Latour, this means wines with an excellent balance between tannins, acidity and fruit concentration.

Tasting notes for Les Forts de Latour 2014 (late release)

  • Nose : Complex and refined, with aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, tobacco, graphite and a hint of cedar wood with subtle notes of vanilla and spices due to the aging in oak barrels.

History

Château Latour has played an important role in the history of the region. Throughout the centuries, many old documents about this winery have been preserved in the archives. This unique heritage shows extraordinary stability and continuity in the estate and those who have worked there throughout Latour's long history, which has undoubtedly been an important factor in the exceptional regularity and quality of the wines.

The oldest document with the mention Latour dates from 1331 and is an authorization given by Lord Pons to Gaucelme de Castillon to build a fortified tower in the parish of Saint Maubert. Château Latour then appears in 1378 in Jean Froissart's "Chronicles". This was the time of the 100 Years' War. The "Tour de Saint Maubert" was a fortress to guard the estuary, manned by Breton soldiers for the King of France. After a three-day siege, the Anglo-Gascon army seized the fort and installed a garrison.
