Description
The journey of the wine importer Miguel Sánchez to Atauta was a stroke of luck for the entire region. On his way through the Ribera del Duero he discovered the small valley with its ancient, abandoned vineyards, more than 400 year old wine cellars, ancient cellar vaults and even the stone wine presses from the 13th century were still there. A wine wonderland that had fallen asleep. The east of the DO was known for being difficult to exploit, because the vines are at a considerable altitude of almost 1,000 meters. Miguel Sánchez came, saw and conquered: the youngest Tempranillo vines are 60 years old, the oldest vines are up to 160 years old, truly unbelievable. An immense wealth! They immediately gave exceptionally beautiful results, after the overgrown plots had been kissed awake. With the appearance of the first wines it became immediately clear that this was not only one of the best wines in the entire country, but even in the entire world! The strictly organic and parcel by parcel separately matured wines are among the best ever obtained from the Tempranillo grape variety.
The harvest of the 1.09 hectares divided into 9 micro-plots of 120-year-old vines in the Valdegatiles terroir took place on October 21, 2016, with a harvest of 3,270 kg. After a double selection of bunches and grapes, the wine was put into barrel by gravity in a 1,000-liter stainless steel tank. After 6 days of cold maceration at a temperature below 10ºC and 2 punch-downs per day, the wine fermented for 11 days with its own yeasts at a maximum temperature of 27ºC, adjusting the number of daily punch-downs according to its needs. After alcoholic fermentation, it macerated for 13 days with the skins, looking for the right structural point. Malolactic fermentation and maturation for 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% new and 80% second use. On October 2, 2018, 1,515 bottles were produced.
The Valdegatiles 2012 is made from 100% Tinto Fino. Very deep cherry colour. Valdegatiles stands out for its great intensity of bright red fruit and a special balance between freshness and power, typical of vineyards with rich clay soils. In the mouth it is intense and powerful, with the red fruit always present and a very long and mouth-filling finish.

I was able to compare the 2012 Valdegatiles with the 2013 vintage of this Tempranillo, which is from head-pruned, dry-farmed old vines from a myriad of many small plots in a more structured zone of the Atauta Valley. The 2012 vintage was warm and dry, very different than the cooler and wetter 2013, and the wines are structured and concentrated. The destemmed grapes fermented in small stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in new and used French oak barrels for 18 months. This is possibly the ripest of the range, with aromas of dark fruit and plenty of structure, even after all this time in bottle. 1,405 bottles were filled in July 2014.
The 2013s were terrific, and scoring them is splitting hairs. Ultimately, it comes down to taste: if you prefer the more mineral Llanos del Almendro or the power of Valdegatiles. The two projects to resume producing San Juan and La Mala are great, but they are produced in tiny quantities, which makes them almost impossible to obtain.

Deep ruby. Complex, highly perfumed scents of candied boysenberry, cola, incense and smoky minerals, with a sexy lavender pastille quality emerging as the wine opens with air. Sweet, expansive berry and spicecake flavors display superb depth and vivacity, with an undercurrent of minerality adding spine. Seamless, penetrating and pure, with a sweet, floral, gently tannic finish that leaves smoke, cola and berry skin notes behind.
