Description
Jacques Fourneaux founded the champagne house in 1734, making it one of the oldest champagne trading houses in Champagne. In 1932, Pierre Taittinger took over the house and it started using the name Taittinger. Step by step, Taittinger acquired name and fame among the major champagne houses by being innovative and focusing on high-quality Chardonnay. Francois Taittinger, innovator and visionary, foresaw that the consumer of the future would greatly appreciate Chardonnay for its light style, finesse and elegance. This led to the first production of the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs in 1952, an exceptional champagne from the grand crus vineyards located on the Côtes de Blancs. Due to his love for art, Taittinger started the special Collection series in 1983. In exceptional years, the champagne bottle is provided with a special art painting in a limited edition. Well-known artists who have had this honor in the past include Vaserely, Arman, Corneille and Lichtenstein.
In 2005, Taittinger sold the champagne house to an investment company, but the family soon discovered that the values and quality of the champagne could not be guaranteed. That is why the family bought back the champagne house in 2006. Now they work hard with a young and enthusiastic team, led by very experienced people, to introduce enthusiasts to the quality and family values in order to share the champagne moment or the “L'instant Taittinger”.
Taittinger is one of the few family businesses in Champagne, led by Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger. Together with daughter Vitalie (Marketing) and son Clovis (Export), he runs the champagne house from Reims. The winemaker and quality controller of the blends at Taittinger is Loïc Dupont, who has been with the company for 25 years. The quality of Taittinger Champagnes is based on the 289 hectares of privately owned vineyards located in the best locations in and around Reims. They supply about half of the annual need for wine. This makes Taittinger less dependent on the fluctuating prices on the grape market and they ensure consistent quality. The remaining grapes are purchased on a contract basis from local farmers, with a relatively large number of Chardonnay grapes from the Côte des Blancs, where the most beautiful Chardonnay comes from. A team of experts, led by Loïc Dupont, selects the wines for the various Taittinger cuvées. Very high demands are placed on the wines for the special top cuvées.
This cuvée is made with only juice from the first pressing. A small percentage (5%) of the blend is aged in new oak barrels to create the very delicate balance of toasted notes in the final wine. Taittinger knows it must be patient with these great Chardonnays, which are the crowning glory of its terroir. The Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs remains in the limestone quarries below Saint-Nicaise for a minimum of 10 years before emerging to ignite and delight the palates of wine lovers. The generous taste of Comtes de Champagne 2012 is built on a chalky structure, which gives it charm and precision. It is perfectly ready to drink now but can certainly be kept for years to come.

The 2012 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne is showing beautifully out of the gates, offering up demonstrative aromas of sweet golden orchard fruit, buttery croissants, peach and hazelnuts. Medium to full-bodied, pillowy and enveloping, it's a rich, textural, vinous Comtes somewhat reminiscent of the brilliant 2002. If it gains in tension and cut (as the 2002 did and as I suspect the 2012 will) with more time on cork, it will make this initial rating seem conservative.
This small report covers Taittinger's newly released 2012 Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs and 2009 Comtes de Champagne Rosé, which have begun to arrive on the marketplace. Both come recommended.

This is a fantastic and refined Blanc de Blancs. So layered and complex, with lemon curd, chalk, hazelnuts, pastries, baked apples and almond croissants. Structured and tightly wound, with almost imperceptible bubbles. Delicious salty notes at the end. Beautiful. Drink or hold.

The 2012 Comtes de Champagne is gorgeous. Warm and resonant in the glass, the 2012 Comtes shows all the allure that makes this vintage so appealing. The combination of bright citrus, mineral and floral notes typical of Comtes, enhanced by the soft contours of the vintage, makes for an inviting, open-knit Champagne that is quite showy right out of the gate. Light tropical accents on the finish add an exotic flair. Usually I recommend cellaring just-released Comtes, but that won’t be necessary here.

Champagne Taittinger is one of the major international brands (Grandes Marques) of the champagne region and is sold in more than 130 countries. Under the leadership of Mr Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger, daughter Vitalie (Marketing) and son Clovis (Export), the champagne house is the only family business in Champagne of this size. With an emphasis on the exclusive Chardonnay grape, Taittinger has been receiving international recognition for years for their consistent quality, finesse and elegance. By building relationships with renowned distributors, a young team with a focus on the future and the choice for selective distribution (focused on the hospitality industry), Taittinger is a rapidly growing brand in the Dutch market.
