Description
Les Cintres Vintage 2012 is the most intense expression of the central plots of Clos des Goisses. This champagne is made entirely of 100% Pinot Noir, from the first pressing. The grapes come from the central plots "Les Grands Cintres" and "Les Petits Cintres" in Clos des Goisses, Mareuil-sur-Ay. The wine is vinified in a traditional way to avoid premature oxidation and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. All the wines are fermented in wooden barrels. The extra-brut dosage (4.5 g/l) preserves the balance between freshness and vinosity, without masking the character and purity of the wine. The wine is aged for more than nine years in the house cellars, at a constant temperature of 12°C. This prolonged maturation develops maximum complexity and brings out secondary and tertiary aromas, characteristic of extended aging sur lie.
In the glass, Les Cintres has a light golden color with a beautiful mousse and persistent fine tears. On the nose, the wine is elegant and fruity with notes of cherry and raspberry liqueur. The finish offers soft accents of honey.
The taste is very elegant and intense. The first fruity aromas of raspberry develop into notes of blueberry and black cherry. The finish is long and retains an excellent freshness.
Particulars
Les Cintres is one of Philipponnat's three single-plot cuvées. The 2012 vintage is the fifth edition, after 2006. The grapes come from the estate's sunniest and oldest vines (up to 70 years old), located on the slopes in the heart of the vineyard. This exclusive cuvée was produced in limited numbers: only 2,176 bottles.
Les Cintres Vintage 2012 has an exceptionally aromatic character and combines subtly with lobster, langoustines and saltwater fish. Thanks to its robust structure and long finish, it also goes perfectly with white meat. After a few years of maturation, this champagne becomes an excellent accompaniment to stews and mature cheeses. This cuvée has already rested in the cellar for several years and, if stored in a cool, dark cellar, can continue to mature for at least 15 years and continue to develop magnificently.

From an outstanding vintage, the 2012 Les Cintres extra brut derives from vines planted on two parcels inside the Clos des Goisses walled vineyard planted with Pinot Noir. It possesses a multifaceted, intense bouquet with aromas of pear, spring flowers, cherries, ripe orchard fruits, crushed stones, honey and rose petals, followed by a full-bodied, fleshy and racy palate that’s simultaneously crystalline and pure with a splendid core of fruit, racy acids and a long, endless finish. Presently, it stands as the most exceptional Les Cintres rendition. Dosage was 4.5 grams per liter.

From: Champagne: 2023 New Releases (Nov 2023)
The 2012 Extra-Brut Les Cintres is a small pure Pinot bottling from one of the core parcels in Clos des Goisses. Medium in body and polished, the 2012 is wonderfully sophisticated wine. Crushed flowers, mint, chalk, dried herbs, orchard fruit and chamomile all grace this exquisite Champagne. Most importantly, the balance of wine and oak today is far better than it was in the first years, even if the 2012 is not showing the richness of the vintage just yet. I suspect this will have a lot more to say later on, as it opens beautifully on the mid-palate and finish, offering a glimpse of what is to come. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 2022.
- By Antonio Galloni on March 2023- I tasted a wide range of Champagnes, both new and old, with Charles Philipponnat and his son François recently. The flagship Clos des Goisses has long been one of Champagne’s most iconic wines. In recent years, though, I have been especially impressed with the entry-level offerings, wines that not too long ago were far less notable. Dosage is on the lower side for the top cuvées, which confers a feeling of vinous intensity and texture that runs throughout the range, the exception being the Clos des Goisses Juste Rosé, which is always an ethereal Rosé.

The history of the Philipponnat family in Champagne goes back to no less than 1697. In the centuries that followed, the family was active in making Champagne for many years. The traditional Champagne House Philipponnat was finally founded in 1910 by Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat. They managed to get hold of beautiful historic cellars, which originated in the 18th century. The house is located in Mareuil-sur-Ay, five kilometers east of Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region.
The cool cellars are the perfect place for the Champagnes to mature on the yeast cells, giving the wine complexity and fine bubbles. Philipponnat wines undergo a bottle aging of at least two years, but usually even three years. In the case of the Millésimé, this period is even longer. The wine of the Clos des Goisses is even stored in the cellar for years, so that it can keep its fresh and complex character for years.
Philipponnat has a total of 17 hectares of vineyards, all with Grand Cru status. In addition, grapes are purchased from first-class producers in the area. We only work with suppliers who guarantee perfect quality grapes and with whom Philipponnat maintains a long-term relationship. The production is 500,000 bottles per year. The wines mainly use pinot – noir – grapes, which give the wines breadth and complexity.
