2009 Remelluri Reserva
Classic Rioja of precision and balance, from the first year in which only grapes from the estate were used.
The 2009 Remelluri Reserva marks a significant turning point within the estate. This is the first modern vintage in which only grapes from their own vineyards were used. Telmo Rodríguez consciously chose to no longer use purchased grapes in this wine, resulting in a purer expression of the Remelluri terroir.
Remelluri Winery
Remelluri is a historic winery in Rioja Alavesa with origins in the Middle Ages and in the hands of the Rodríguez family since the 20th century. Under the leadership of Telmo Rodríguez, the emphasis is on terroir, estate vineyards, and minimal intervention. The estate was one of the first in Rioja to move away from purchased grapes and focus entirely on provenance. The style is refined, classic, and focused on balance and structure. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño. This area is characterized by calcareous soils and a temperate climate with Atlantic influences. The altitude and location ensure fresh acidity and a slow ripening of the grapes. The 2009 vintage was warmer, but Remelluri's relatively cool location ensured that the wine retained its balance and freshness, with controlled ripeness and a clear structure.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The grapes for this wine come entirely from Remelluri's own vineyards, situated at various altitudes with soils of limestone, clay, and stony structures. The vines are of a high average age and yield concentrated fruit with a clear terroir expression. The blend consists primarily of Tempranillo, complemented by traditional Rioja varieties that contribute to complexity and structure.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest was carried out manually with a strict selection of the grapes. Fermentation was controlled to achieve a balanced extraction. The wine subsequently aged for several years in oak barrels, ensuring the integration of wood and the development of tertiary aromas. The style remains focused on balance and structure, with the wood acting in a supporting role rather than being dominant.
Color, smell and taste
The wine displays a deep ruby red color with slight evolution. The aroma reveals notes of red fruit, earth, and dried herbs, complemented by subtle influences of vanilla and cinnamon. This combination creates a classic and recognizable Rioja profile.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a satiny texture. The tannins are round and fine-grained, resulting in a smooth and balanced structure. The acidity is well integrated and adds freshness to the whole. The wine has a classic structure with a clear balance between fruit, spiciness, and wood. The finish is long and refined, with a gradual development of aromas and a stable structure that unfolds beautifully in the glass.
Development and drinking window
No specific drinking window is mentioned, but given the structure and balance, this wine is currently in a beautifully developed phase. The wine displays both primary and tertiary aromas.

Specifieke bereidingswijzen die extra goed werken zijn langzaam gegaarde stoofpotten, braadvlees met een kruidige rub en geroosterde lamsbout met tijm en knoflook, waardoor de wijn volledig tot zijn recht komt. |

The 2009 Remelluri Reserva aims at showing the character of Remelluri, as this is the first modern vintage that does not have grapes purchased from external suppliers. These grapes are now in the Lindes range of wines, but in the past they were blended with the estate grapes. The cool Remelluri vineyards behave very well in warmer years. This 2009 is very clean with predominant aromas of earthy red fruit intermixed with notes of vanilla and cinnamon, a satin texture with round, fine-grained tannins and quite classical and very well-proportioned style. This is a great vintage for Remelluri Reserva.
The Remelluri name should be well-known to our readers. The big news here was the return of Telmo Rodriguez, who left the family winery to start his own projects throughout Spain, but returned in February 2010. Many changes have been made, and more will come. For example, he’s starting a solera with Viura, blending different vintages, in a kind of homage to old white Riojas. To start, he’s clearly separating the wines produced with the estate grapes and those produced with grapes purchased from external suppliers, for which he has created the line Lindes de Remelluri (Remelluri borders). He’s also implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
