Old Château Certan 2023
Vieux Château Certan, one of the oldest and most respected châteaux in Pomerol, has produced another exceptional wine in 2023. The blend, composed of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Franc, has an alcohol content of 14% and a pH of 3.74. The wine was rated 94-96 points by William Kelley.
Tasting notes
The 2023 Vieux Château Certan opens with exuberant aromas of dark berries, pencil shavings, violets, burning charcoal, iris, crushed mint, and black tea. This medium- to full-bodied wine is velvety and sensual, with a rich attack that flows into a layered, enveloping mid-palate. The wine has a polished and perfumed finish, with a sweet core of fruit and a long, subtly oak-influenced finish.
Climate and Harvest
The 2023 vintage was characterized by moderate weather conditions until harvest. Flowering proceeded smoothly, and the grapes' veraison (coloring) occurred as early as mid-July, without extreme heat or water stress. Summer temperatures rose in late August, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. The harvest took place from September 18th to 29th.
Vineyard Management and Vinification
The terroir of Vieux Château Certan is uniquely situated, with soils ranging from clay to gravel. The vineyards cover 14 hectares and are divided into 23 plots, each individually managed based on soil type and grape variety. The average age of the vines is 50 years, contributing to the complexity and depth of the wines.
Vinification at Vieux Château Certan combines traditional methods with modern techniques. The grapes are carefully selected and undergo gentle extraction at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks, followed by aging in barrels, two-thirds of which are new oak.
History
Vieux Château Certan was founded at the beginning of the 16th century by the Demay family from Scotland and appeared on the Belleyme map in 1785 under the name "Sertan." In 1858, it became the property of Charles de Bousquet, who commissioned the construction of the current château buildings. In 1924, the Flemish wine merchant Georges Thienpont purchased the property, marking the beginning of the Thienpont family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Today, Vieux Château Certan is managed by Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont, who continue the tradition and craftsmanship, resulting in wines of exceptional quality and elegance. The château truly embodies Pomerol's rich history and unique terroir.
Conclusion
The 2023 Vieux Château Certan is a stunning wine that combines exotic aromas, deep layers of fruit, and sublime textures. The result is a wine of great refinement and power, with excellent aging potential. This wine perfectly reflects the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Vieux Château Certan and will be admired for many years to come.

This is a beautiful wine, much more developed and evolved than the 2010, as one might expect, with perfumed notes of camphor, cedar, charcoal, herbs, and black and red fruits. A blend of 70% of Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine has very complex aromatics, medium to full body, outstanding ripeness, a spicy, perfumed character, and light to moderate tannin. It can benefit from 2-4 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades.

Vibrant, earthy clay minerality with eucalyptus notes, as well as pot-pourri, dried flowers and bright dark fruit that’s soaked with spice. The tannins here are condensed and loaded with lifted acidity. Full body and abundant tension. Classy wine with plenty of elegance and length. Very classic. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.

From: Memories Elide: Vieux Château Certan 1923-2020 (Jul 2024)
The 2008 Vieux Château Certan was cropped at 34hl/ha and contains more Cabernets compared to other vintages. Their contribution is tangible on the nose: pencil shavings and tertiary scents are pretty potent and lend it a Left Bank allure. The palate is fresh and vibrant with grainy tannins, graphite-driven, fresh and tensile with a persistent finish. Certainly, one of the best Pomerols in this challenging growing season, VCC at its most Médoc. Tasted at the VCC vertical in Etikhove, Belgium.

Vieux Château Certan is one of the oldest known chateaus in Pomerol. It was founded at the beginning of the 16th century when the Demay family arrived from Scotland to settle there. It appeared on Belleyme's 1785 map under the name "Sertan". In Pomerol, the place name Certan is taken from the estate. In 1858, Charles de Bousquet became the owner of Vieux Château Certan. The castle buildings we see today were built by him. In 1924 Georges Thienpont, a Flemish wine merchant, bought the property. This marked the beginning of the family's presence in the Bordeaux region.
Covering an area of 14 hectares (35 acres) planted in a single block, the Vieux Château Certan vineyard consists of 23 plots, each managed separately according to the soil type, the grape variety planted and the age of the vines. The soils are subtly varied and contain a very clayey part planted mainly with Merlot (70%), a gravel-clay part planted with Cabernet Franc (25%) and a very gravelly part planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). Taking into account the total area, the average age of the vineyard is 50 years. These old vines, together with the beneficial effect of the microclimate of the Pomerol plateau, allow the different grape varieties to reach perfect levels of ripeness. Vieux Château Certan is the result of a very special ecosystem where the soil, vines and climate merge harmoniously to produce exceptional wine. The Vieux Château Certan cellars optimally combine tradition with today's technicality and precision. The vinification takes place in temperature-controlled oak barrels at 28°C to ensure a gentle, measured extraction. This process takes a little longer but gives a much more elegant result.
Vieux Château Certan combines savoir-faire with exceptional soils. Mainly sourced from the oldest vines of the vineyard, Vieux Château Certan is a blend of the most excellent plots produced on the estate each year. The brilliance of the wine's hue, the richness of its aromas and the subtlety of its taste give it an inimitable style. The wines of Vieux Château Certan have a natural concentration and must be kept in the cellar for several years before the first bottles can be opened. As with the greatest Bordeaux wines, they can be enjoyed after 10 to 15 years and have a very fine aging potential.
