This is an Ex-Château bottling, which is also explicitly stated on the label. Telmo Rodríguez deliberately aged a small number of bottles of this vintage in the cellars of Remelluri to demonstrate the aging potential and long-term development of this wine.
Remelluri Winery
Remelluri is a historic winery in Rioja that traces its roots back to the Middle Ages and has been managed by the Telmo Rodríguez family since the 20th century. The estate operates based on a clear vision of terroir, with an emphasis on its own vineyards and natural balance. Remelluri was one of the first producers in Rioja to break with the classic model of purchased grapes. The style is refined, understated, and focused on provenance. Region, climate and location
The Remelluri vineyards are located in Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra de Toloño. This area is characterized by calcareous soils, varying altitudes, and a temperate climate with Atlantic influences. These conditions ensure fresh acidity and a slow ripening of the grapes. The 2008 vintage followed a classic progression with sufficient freshness, resulting in a wine with tension and a more traditional structure, less focused on power and more on balance and development.
Vineyards and grape varieties
For the 2008 Reserva, grapes were used from both the estate's own vineyards and external plots, making this the last vintage in which this method was applied. The vineyards are spread across various altitudes and soils, with a combination of limestone and clay. The blend consists primarily of Tempranillo, supplemented by other traditional Rioja varieties. This composition results in a wine with structure, spiciness, and a distinct regional identity.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes were hand-harvested and selected, followed by traditional vinification with controlled fermentation. The wine then aged for several years in oak barrels, ensuring the integration of wood and the development of tertiary aromas. The emphasis is not on extraction or power, but on balance and gradual aging, which is typical of the Remelluri style.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a ruby red color with clear evolution at the rim. On the nose, notes of blackcurrant, blackberry leaf, and dried herbs emerge, complemented by mint, bay leaf, and balsamic accents. There is a subtle smokiness present, along with a light spiciness reminiscent of black pepper.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a refined structure. The tannins are fine and integrated, while the acidity provides freshness and tension. The style is restrained and serious, with a focus on structure and spiciness rather than pronounced fruit. The finish is dry, with notes of smoke, dried herbs, and spices. As the wine opens up, more nuances emerge and the wine develops additional complexity.

Before broaching present releases, The 2008 Reserva will be the final vintage blended from grapes sourced outside Remelluri’s boundaries. Perhaps my score is parsimonious, but intuition tells me that great Reservas in the mold of the 1976 lie in the years ahead. It has a well-defined nose of blackberry leaf, mint, bay leaf and balsamic that would benefit from a little more tension. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a lovely, smoke and dried herb-tinged finish with a dash of black pepper. This is quite a “serious” Rioja that needs a little more joie-de-vivre.

With Remelluri, Telmo Rodriguez is putting the Rioja on the map as a producer of original terroir wines. Long before the Rodriguez family settled on Remelluri, wine was already being made on the estate. As early as the 14th century, the monks here made wine from grapes from the surrounding vineyards. In 1967, the house came into the hands of Jaime Rodriguez, the father of pioneer and idiosyncratic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez. Jaime immediately makes radical changes. For example, he decided to only make wine from grapes from his own vineyards, which was exceptional in the Rioja at the time. We also strive to cultivate the vineyards as naturally as possible, in order to preserve the special character of the vineyards as much as possible. In 2010, the vineyards were officially certified organic under the leadership of Telmo.
In the early 1990s, Telmo joined the company. The story goes that his father wants to keep the production of the red wines for himself, so Telmo comes up with the beautiful white Remelluri Blanco. After several years of making wine in other parts of Spain, Telmo returned to Remelluri in 2010, where he took up winemaking together with his sister Amaya. As a great advocate of terroir wines, he has a clear opinion about the wines of the Rioja. Because winemakers often buy most of the grapes from grape growers, they have lost the connection with the vineyards and the terroir, he believes. In addition, the low prices of the grapes have caused winegrowers to neglect or even grub up the more challenging vineyards, often the older, high-altitude plots. With the wines of Remelluri, Telmo wants to show that the Rioja has many different terroirs that can be beautifully expressed in the wines.
