Description
Located in the heart of Reims, Le Clos Lanson is the only hectare of vineyard located within the historic walls of the city. Hidden behind high walls, this single vineyard with chardonnay vines dates back to the 18th century and offers breathtaking views of the cathedral. Located just above the cellars of the house, le Clos Lanson is managed like a real garden, both because of its unique location and the special care it receives. In addition, this single vineyard benefits from a very pure, calcareous soil and an exceptional microclimate favorable to the development of the vine. Only a very limited number of vintage bottles are produced each year.
This Champagne is a Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay). The grapes come 100% from a small walled vineyard of only 1 hectare. Only 6,768 bottles were produced. The wine matures for 12 years on the lees (Sur Lie) and 6 months of minimum rest before disgorgement. Clos Lanson 2008 is known for its lively acidity, fresh citrus and floral notes. It often exhibits a combination of aromas of green apple, lemon peel and white flowers. The long maturation contributes to a creamy texture and a subtle roasted character.
Champagne is highly dependent on weather conditions, and in 2008 the region experienced near-perfect weather throughout the entire growing season. Spring and summer had moderate temperatures, lots of sunshine and just the right amount of precipitation. These conditions allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, resulting in excellent quality. The slow ripening period of the grapes allowed for the development of ideal sugar levels, acidity and flavors in the grapes, which are crucial for making high-quality champagne.

This was only a preview of the 2008 Brut Blanc de Blancs Clos Lanson, as the 2009 vintage—and perhaps the 2010, too—will be released before this comes onto the market. Mingling notes of buttered orchard fruit, citrus zest, brioche and white flowers, the wine is full-bodied, tensile and concentrated, displaying searing intensity and an introverted, acid-driven palate that possesses immense potential but which won't be ready for inspection any time soon. This is a classic in the making, but it will need time.
