Description
The 1999 Champagne Philipponnat Extra Brut Clos des Goisses LV is a champagne with a maturation of more than 25 years.
« LV » stands for Long Vieillissement (long maturation) « LV »: these two letters hide treasures that Philipponnat has been preserving since the end of the last century. The Clos des Goisses LV collection of old vintages, matured for more than a quarter of a century, promises unparalleled quality and exclusivity. Available in very limited quantities (only
(a few hundred bottles for each vintage), each LV vintage is disgorged for six to nine months before going on sale. Presented in a numbered wooden box, the bottles are only available for purchase through Philipponnat's network of loyal ambassadors.
The CLOS DES GOISSES LV 1999 is a blend of 59% Pinot Noir and 41% Chardonnay. In the glass, the wine has a light golden color with silver glints. The foam is fine and delicate. The nose is initially both mineral and smoky. Notes of saltiness, nori seaweed and grilled almonds emerge with aeration. In the mouth, the champagne is fresh and round, with hints of honey, white nougat and dried fruit.

Surpassing the 2010, the 2015 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses is gorgeous, evoking aromas of pear, mirabelle, spices, honey, brioche and perfectly ripe orchard fruits intertwined with delicate notes of iodine. Full-bodied, vinous and concentrated, it's layered and dense with remarkable depth at the core combined with racy acids and a structured, perfectly balanced mid-palate. Slightly austere at this stage, it finishes long and sappy with a licorice-inflected aftertaste. This blend of 78% Pinot Noir and 22% Chardonnay, disgorged in March 2024 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Readers eager to experience this superb Champagne at its peak should be patient.
Champagne Philipponnat has undoubtedly made significant strides since Charles Philipponnat took the helm of the eponymous house, which is part of Lanson-BCC. With mastery over grape sourcing, optimization of the winemaking process and a strong focus on expressing the uniqueness of different terroirs—whether from Clos des Goisses or other vineyards—the Champagnes are pure, crystalline and vinous, showcasing remarkable aging potential. During my recent visit, in the company of Charles and his son François, I witnessed this qualitative evolution firsthand, and I must say that the 2015 Clos des Goisses stands out as one of the most precise and impressive of the “modern era,” while their rosé Champagnes are equally splendid. I strongly urge readers who appreciate saline, gastronomic wines to explore the entire range from this outstanding house.

The 1999 Extra-Brut Clos des Goisses L.V. is stunning. A Champagne of soaring intensity and pedigree, the 1999 is simply magnificent. Citrus, marzipan, chamomile, baked apple tart and yellow flowers open effortlessly. The 1999 is a timeless wine. It shows some signs of age and yet remains wonderfully fresh. Its purity and finesse are just remarkable. I can't wait to taste it in finished form. Tasted à la volée, with no dosage.

Philipponnat is a fine example of a traditional house that has added to its range with a set of smaller, site-specific wines. I also tasted two future releases of Clos des Goisses disgorged à la volée, in other words, on the spot, with no added dosage, both of which are quite promising.

The history of the Philipponnat family in Champagne goes back to no less than 1697. In the centuries that followed, the family was active in making Champagne for many years. The traditional Champagne House Philipponnat was finally founded in 1910 by Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat. They managed to get hold of beautiful historic cellars, which originated in the 18th century. The house is located in Mareuil-sur-Ay, five kilometers east of Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne region.
The cool cellars are the perfect place for the Champagnes to mature on the yeast cells, giving the wine complexity and fine bubbles. Philipponnat wines undergo a bottle aging of at least two years, but usually even three years. In the case of the Millésimé, this period is even longer. The wine of the Clos des Goisses is even stored in the cellar for years, so that it can keep its fresh and complex character for years.
Philipponnat has a total of 17 hectares of vineyards, all with Grand Cru status. In addition, grapes are purchased from first-class producers in the area. We only work with suppliers who guarantee perfect quality grapes and with whom Philipponnat maintains a long-term relationship. The production is 500,000 bottles per year. The wines mainly use pinot – noir – grapes, which give the wines breadth and complexity.
