Legendary Bordeaux from a classic year, still with impressive tension and depth.

Petrus 1984: a rare wine with character

1984 wasn't a stellar vintage in Bordeaux, but Petrus managed to turn it into something special. Unlike many other châteaux that struggled with aging and balance in this challenging year, this Pomerol displays surprisingly good structure and elegance. It's not a powerhouse, but that understated style makes it particularly appealing to lovers of refined, mature wines.

What's immediately striking about the 1984 vintage is its soft texture and earthy notes. You don't get an explosion of fruit here, but rather an intriguing interplay of prunes, truffle, tobacco, and leather. The wine has clearly reached its peak, yet it still lives. That's precisely what makes old Bordeaux so fascinating: the moment when everything comes together.

What makes this Peter so special?

Petrus's strength lies in its terroir: heavy clay soil where Merlot thrives. No blend here, just pure Merlot. Even in a vintage like 1984, this grape variety proves its worth. The wine isn't bombastic, but rather subtle and complex. A close palate will reveal the layers: first a touch of smoky, then a touch of iron, followed by spices, and a distant hint of red fruit. The finish isn't endless, but it lingers surprisingly long.

You have to be patient with a wine like this. Just letting it breathe in the glass works wonders. And it helps if you sit down and enjoy it calmly. Not a wine to be sipped casually, but one to truly experience.

How long is Petrus 1984 still ready to drink?

That naturally depends on how the bottle has been stored, but generally speaking: this is a wine to drink now. Its peak years are behind it, but that doesn't mean it's deteriorated. Quite the opposite. It has developed into a mature, refined wine with character. Be careful when opening: the cork is often brittle at this age.

This is also a fascinating vintage for collectors. Not because of its absolute perfection, but precisely because it's such an atypical Petrus. A silent witness to a difficult year in which something beautiful nevertheless emerged.

Tasting notes from wine lovers

Anyone who looks at wine forums or older vintage guides will find mixed opinions. Some call it too light, others praise its balance. And let's be honest: that's what makes tasting a wine like this so enjoyable. There's no single consensus. It all depends on your taste, your preference, and the moment you drink it.

Do you have a bottle of 1984 Petrus on the table? Then serve something simple. Think slow-cooked veal cheek, mushroom risotto, or roasted root vegetables. No sauces or fuss. Let the wine do the talking.

Château Pétrus is owned by the Moueix family and located in Pomerol (Bordeaux). Château Pétrus produces the most famous Merlot wine in the world! The vineyard covers just 11.5 hectares and is planted with 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc vines, with an average age of 45 years. The soil consists of iron-rich clay.

Château Pétrus: the ultimate icon of Pomerol

Château Pétrus is without a doubt one of the most legendary wine estates in the world. Situated in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the plateau of Pomerol, this modest estate has been producing exceptional red wines for decades. Although Pétrus does not carry an official classification (Pomerol has no Grand Cru system), the wine is globally regarded as one of the very best, often mentioned in the same breath as the Premier Crus of the Médoc.

The terroir of Château Pétrus

What makes Pétrus so special is its unique terroir. The 11.5-hectare vineyard lies on a rare subsoil of blue clay; a type of soil found almost nowhere else in Bordeaux. This clay retains water exceptionally well, which is crucial in dry years, and gives the wines their remarkable power and refinement. Its location on the highest point of Pomerol also ensures optimal sun exposure and drainage.

Pétrus produces Merlot in its purest form

Pétrus is almost entirely planted with Merlot. This grape thrives on the heavy clay soil and produces wines that are rich, velvety, and powerful. In some vintages, a small percentage of Cabernet Franc is added, but the focus is always on expressing Merlot at its finest. In the glass, this translates into intense aromas of black fruit, truffle, cocoa, and violets, with a sensual texture and an endless finish. The wine can age for decades, gaining in complexity and depth over time.

Meticulous vinification at Château Pétrus

At Château Pétrus, every detail matters. From rigorous selection in the vineyard to slow fermentation and aging in carefully chosen French oak barrels - every step of the winemaking process is aimed at crafting a wine that is both grand and elegant. Only a few thousand cases are produced each year, which adds to its exclusivity.

A wine for collectors and true enthusiasts

Pétrus is more than just a wine. It is a collector’s item, a symbol of prestige, and above all a singular taste experience. Those lucky enough to own a bottle will discover the essence of top Bordeaux, made with dedication, tradition, and a pursuit of perfection. It is a wine that reveals its full potential only in the best vintages, making each release eagerly anticipated.
