Magnifieke Riesling van een meer dan uitstekend wijnhuis. Deze Brunnenhausen Riesling GG van Weingut Wittmann uit de regio Rheinhessen is intens, rijp en puur op de neus met diepe, elegante aroma's van gerijpt fruit en kruiden. In de mond vol, fris, verfijnd, krachtig met fijne tannines. In de smaak blinkt deze wijn uit door de mooie balans tussen citrus en mineraliteit. Een zeer rijke en pure wijn met mooi verouderingspotentieel. De Groses Gewachs wordt in zeer kleine hoeveelheden gemaakt en allocatie voor Nederland is slechts enkele flessen.
Hoewel de Brunnenhaushen-wijngaard, net ten oosten van Morstein gelegen, op het zuiden ligt, staat hij toch bekend om zijn zeer late rijping. Dit is een product van zowel de hoogte (240 meter boven zeeniveau) als de blootstelling aan de westenwind, die afkoelt ondanks de intense zonneschijn die hier valt. Kleiachtige mergel met kalksteen en massief kalksteengesteente bepalen het precieze, geconcentreerde karakter van de wijn. Er zijn ook porties Terra Rossa, een rode aarde met een hoog ijzeroxidegehalte die de Rieslings een romige mineraliteit geeft.
Weingut Wittmann is gelegen in Westhofen en produceert biodynamische wijnen met terroirexpressie en extreme precisie. De Wittmanns en hun voorouders zijn al sinds de 17e eeuw wijnbouwers in Westhofen. De ervaring van zo'n 350 jaargangen van meer dan 15 generaties is van grote in het onschatbare erfgoed van de familie. Tijd en rust zijn essentiële ingrediënten voor het maken van een goede wijn. En dit is precies wat de wijnen volop krijgen in de gewelfde kelder, gebouwd in 1829. Wijnmaker Philipp Wittmann waakt over zijn wijnen, onder constante temperatuur- en vochtigheidscondities, terwijl ze rijpen in 80 houten vaten. De oudste van deze vaten is uit het jaar 1890 en bood al onderdak aan vele grote jaargangen. Elk vat bevat de oogst van 1 enkel wijngaardperceel.
VDP Grosse Lage is de noemer voor de allerbeste Duitse wijngaarden, die per perceel nauwkeurig begrensd zijn. Unieke wijnen met een bijzondere expressie van het specifieke perceel, een volwassen karakter en een groot rijpingspotentieel worden hier geboren. Alleen de allerbeste en, specifieke bij de wijngaard passende druivenrassen, genieten het privilege hiervoor aangeplant te worden. De strengst mogelijke productiecriteria staan garant voor de top van de VDP kwalificatiepiramide.
De Grosse Lage Brunnenhauschen (gelegen ten oosten van Morstein) hoewel zuiver zuidelijk gelegen, zorgt voor zeer late rijpheid. Dit komt door de grote hoogte, tot 240 meter boven zeeniveau, en de blootstelling aan de westenwind die de temperatuur koel houdt ondanks het intense zonlicht. De bodem bestaat uit Tonmargel met kalksteen en kalkstenen kliffen die het precieze, dichte karakter van de wijn bepalen. Bovendien zijn er gedeeltelijke delen van Terra Rossa, dwz rode gronden met een hoog ijzeroxidegehalte, die deze Riesling een romige mineraliteit geven.

The 2022 Brunnenhäuschen Westhofen Riesling GG opens with a beautifully pure, refined and elegant bouquet from red-colored clay soils covering limestone rocks. The nose is deep, pure and saline, dense and intense but elegant, with yeasty notes intertwined with ripe and concentrated but lush fruit aromas. Very complex and pure on the palate, this is a full-bodied, refined, precise and elegant, seamlessly textured and enormously saline-finishing Riesling from limestone soils with marl layers. It's a fascinating complex and highly refined Riesling. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2023.
Old vines in particular withstood the summer drought of the 2022 vintage, reports Philipp Wittmann, who removed all fruit from all plants under five years old. Vine age was also a decisive selection criterion during the harvest, as old roots reach so deep that they can reach the water reserves in the soil. This kept the vines vital, "and you could see that very clearly during the harvest," says Wittmann. In the old vineyards, the must weights were 10° Oechsle higher than in the poorer and younger vineyards. The maxim was to produce wines with finesse and elegance despite the heat and dryness, at least as much as possible. This naturally resulted in self-imposed losses in quantity, for example in Nierstein, where Wittmann was only able to harvest 28 hectoliters from 1.2 hectares of vines. "In extremely dry conditions, yields have to remain low, so we kept cutting grapes where necessary. You have to recognize the differences in the vineyard and adapt your measures accordingly. Blanket solutions would often have been the wrong ones."
In order not to lose freshness, finesse and elegance in 2022, Wittmann dispensed with maceration times and instead gently crushed the grapes or processed some of them as whole grapes in the closed, barely rotating tank press at low pressure, at most after a short standing time. This resulted in musts rich in finesse, which proved particularly successful with the Pinot wines, which Wittmann is getting better and better at, including in 2022. The Chardonnay, Pinot Banc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir were harvested on 10 consecutive days right at the beginning in "extremely dry" weather. "Without any over-ripening," as Wittmann emphasizes.
Then came the first rainfall, the effect of which could not initially be seen in the vineyards, dry as they were. There were no extreme rainfalls anyway, and when it did rain, the water dried up quickly. Careful canopy management had also ensured this. At most, the harvest had to be paused for three days or used for negative pre-selections. After that, however, things continued "relaxed," says Wittmann. "The harvest weather was great and the grapes were perfectly healthy."
The Rieslings were harvested in a good two and a half weeks from mid-September. Three Auslese wines followed in early October, and the 2022 harvest was completed on October 8.
The domaine's average yield was an extremely moderate 40 hectoliters per hectare and delivered "very good qualities." The Gutswein Riesling and the GGs lacked 25% of the potential yield due to early negative selections.
The musts of the vintage fermented well, and the wines bottled this summer are balanced and rich in finesse and, above all, rich in aroma. Overall, Wittmann has once again succeeded in producing a great collection, with the complex yet accessible Morstein GG at the top.

What a breathtakingly vibrant and delicate nose this great riesling GG has! A ray of light falls through a high window and falls on the floor at your feet. Super-focused and crystalline on the medium-bodied palate where the power is masterfully underplayed. This has an exotic side, but it is so restrained. Incredibly long, pure finish. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Westhofener Brunnenhäuschen Grosses Gewächs abuts the Morstein, but it is slightly more elevated with its limestone overlaid with terra rossa rich in iron oxide. Flinty reduction still holds sway on the nose. However, the palate comes with a smooth, serene and gentle texture of lemon zest bedded on soft, pillowy yeast, yet with many directions and zing, driving forward with gentle force. The finish tapers to beautiful, lemon-pervaded slenderness. The phenolic grip manifests on the finish with beautiful finesse and zesty, citric definition. The 2022 is a lovely and intriguing mix of obliqueness and directness. It's very long and very fine in the face of 2022. Wow. (Bone-dry)

Philipp Wittmann now farms 35 hectares in and around Westhofen, 75% of these are planted to Riesling; the next important variety is Weissburgunder/Pinot Blanc. Wittmann also buys grapes to make wines for his 100 Hills brand. His parents were early adopters of organic methods, and when Philipp returned from studies in Geisenheim, he trialed biodynamic methods and implemented them entirely in 2004. He took the reins of the estate in 2007 when it still had around 20 hectares of vines. As a leading light of the ‘Message in a Bottle’ movement founded in 2001 to raise the profile of Rheinhessen wine, Wittmann helped to put critical sites on the map, above all the Westhofener Morstein, a limestone site with a slight clay-marl cover which makes his two most famous wines today. His other sites are Aulerde, Kirchspiel and Brunnenhäuschen – all are on Tertiary limestone. Not that these sites were not well-known before – but they had been all but forgotten by the mid-to-late 20th century. Today, Wittmann notes a shift of Riesling to more elevated sites like the Gundersheimer Höllenbrand – and he counts himself lucky to have sites with water-retentive clay and marl topsoils. While his top wines get showered with accolades, he is careful to stress the importance he places on his Riesling trocken: “I deliberately avoid the term estate wine /Gutswein because I no longer see this hierarchy. It misses out on the thought of provenance. It is important that this wine reflects what we do at the top in a more subdued form. I want this to be the fingerprint of the Westhofen sites, plus my fingerprint, but we work this in the same way as the top wines; it just is fruit from different vineyards.” All the Rieslings are made similarly: “We normally crush the grapes slightly and macerate a little, depending on ripeness. In years like 2022, I am very careful with that and include whole berries,” he explains. The musts are clarified by settling for a few hours and go into large barrels relatively cloudy. Everything is fermented spontaneously. Fermentation takes four to six weeks, and since he wants to ferment to dryness, which here means less than 3g/L, he does not mind top temperatures of between 20°-25°C. Wittmann remarks that he does not aim to capture fruit flavors with cool ferments. The wines remain on their gross lees. Estate wines are blended and bottled in April/May. Anything above is either racked or stays on gross lees in barrel until late summer. Wines made from Pinot varieties are racked off gross lees to spend a second year in barrel. These profound, precise wines show the intention to express site and limestone with a real citrus focus. Wittmann’s auction wine, La Borne, is by now rather famous: made from a parcel in the upper part of the Morstein, acquired in the 2000s and first vinified separately in 2009. Its name refers to the parcel’s location along a former district boundary marked by a stone, borne in French, harking back to the time when all of Rheinhessen was a French département under Napoleon.

Sterwijnmaker Philipp Wittmann (verantwoordelijk voor de kelder en de export) heeft samen met vader Günther (wijngaarden) en moeder Elisabeth (verkoop) een fantastisch wijnbedrijf opgebouwd in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Er wordt al sinds 1990 eerst biologisch en later biologisch dynamisch gewerkt. Het uitgangspunt voor de wijnen is daarom: terroirexpressie door een gezonde bodem. Een lage opbrengst per hectare, handmatige selectie van de beste druiven en een zeer langzame vinificatie met natuurlijke gisten zonder toevoeging van sulfiet op grote houten foeders doen de rest. Het huis is ‘de standaard’ voor Rheinhessen en inmiddels ook een standaard voor Duits wit in het algemeen. Dat blijkt uit de enorme stroom internationale waarderingen die de wijnen krijgen, zowel de hogere als lagere. Zo is Philipp al twee keer uitgeroepen tot de beste witte wijnmaker van Duitsland door de gezaghebbende Eichelmann in 2003 en 2013. In 2014 kreeg hij dezelfde titel van Gault Millau. Philipp is getrouwd met Eva Clüsserath die haar eigen wijndomein in de Moezel bezit. Naar verluidt heeft Philipp een hekel aan augustus: dan moet hij namelijk de verdeling maken van zijn Grosse Gewächse. Dat is vooral vervelend omdat de vraag steeds verder toeneemt en het aanbod klein is. Hij heeft dus eigenlijk voor iedereen te weinig. Niet zo vreemd, gezien het feit dat zijn GG’s tot 96 punten van Parker opleveren, hij door Eichelmann al 2 keer tot beste witte wijnmaker van Duitsland werd gekroond, in 2014 Wijnmaker van het jaar was bij Gault Millau en in 2015 bij Schlemmer Atlas en jaarlijks in Mainz tijdens de GG proeverij als één van de allerbesten uit de bus komt!
Wittmann blijft consequent kiezen voor kwaliteit en dat betekent dat hij alleen het fraaiste fruit uit zijn wijngaarden als GG uitbrengt. De rest gaat in de Westhofener en zelfs de Riesling Trocken wordt voor een deel met dit edele fruit gemaakt.

As a leading light of the ‘Message in a Bottle’ movement founded in 2001 to raise the profile of Rheinhessen wine, Wittmann helped to put critical sites on the map, above all the Westhofener Morstein, a limestone site with a slight clay-marl cover which makes his two most famous wines today. His other sites are Aulerde, Kirchspiel and Brunnenhäuschen – all are on Tertiary limestone. Not that these sites were not well-known before – but they had been all but forgotten by the mid-to-late 20th century. Today, Wittmann notes a shift of Riesling to more elevated sites like the Gundersheimer Höllenbrand – and he counts himself lucky to have sites with water-retentive clay and marl topsoils. While his top wines get showered with accolades, he is careful to stress the importance he places on his Riesling trocken: “I deliberately avoid the term estate wine /Gutswein because I no longer see this hierarchy. It misses out on the thought of provenance. It is important that this wine reflects what we do at the top in a more subdued form. I want this to be the fingerprint of the Westhofen sites, plus my fingerprint, but we work this in the same way as the top wines; it just is fruit from different vineyards.” All the Rieslings are made similarly: “We normally crush the grapes slightly and macerate a little, depending on ripeness. In years like 2022, I am very careful with that and include whole berries,” he explains. The musts are clarified by settling for a few hours and go into large barrels relatively cloudy. Everything is fermented spontaneously. Fermentation takes four to six weeks, and since he wants to ferment to dryness, which here means less than 3g/L, he does not mind top temperatures of between 20°-25°C. Wittmann remarks that he does not aim to capture fruit flavors with cool ferments. The wines remain on their gross lees. Estate wines are blended and bottled in April/May. Anything above is either racked or stays on gross lees in barrel until late summer. Wines made from Pinot varieties are racked off gross lees to spend a second year in barrel. These profound, precise wines show the intention to express site and limestone with a real citrus focus. Wittmann’s auction wine, La Borne, is by now rather famous: made from a parcel in the upper part of the Morstein, acquired in the 2000s and first vinified separately in 2009. Its name refers to the parcel’s location along a former district boundary marked by a stone, borne in French, harking back to the time when all of Rheinhessen was a French département under Napoleon.

Weingut Wittmann is gelegen in Westhofen in de wijnstreek Rheinhessen en produceert biodynamische wijnen met terroirexpressie en extreme precisie. De Wittmanns en hun voorouders zijn al sinds de 17e eeuw wijnbouwers in Westhofen. De ervaring van zo'n 350 jaargangen van meer dan 15 generaties is van grote in het onschatbare erfgoed van de familie. Tijd en rust zijn essentiële ingrediënten voor het maken van een goede wijn. En dit is precies wat de wijnen volop krijgen in de gewelfde kelder, gebouwd in 1829. Wijnmaker Philipp Wittmann waakt over zijn wijnen, onder constante temperatuur- en vochtigheidscondities, terwijl ze rijpen in 80 houten vaten. De oudste van deze vaten is uit het jaar 1890 en bood al onderdak aan vele grote jaargangen. Elk vat bevat de oogst van 1 enkel wijngaardperceel.
Sterwijnmaker Philipp Wittmann (verantwoordelijk voor de kelder en de export) heeft samen met vader Günther (wijngaarden) en moeder Elisabeth (verkoop) een fantastisch wijnbedrijf opgebouwd in Westhofen, Rheinhessen. Er wordt al sinds 1990 eerst biologisch en later biologisch dynamisch gewerkt. Het uitgangspunt voor de wijnen is daarom: terroirexpressie door een gezonde bodem. Een lage opbrengst per hectare, handmatige selectie van de beste druiven en een zeer langzame vinificatie met natuurlijke gisten zonder toevoeging van sulfiet op grote houten foeders doen de rest. Het huis is ‘de standaard’ voor Rheinhessen en inmiddels ook een standaard voor Duits wit in het algemeen. Dat blijkt uit de enorme stroom internationale waarderingen die de wijnen krijgen, zowel de hogere als lagere. Zo is Philipp al twee keer uitgeroepen tot de beste witte wijnmaker van Duitsland door de gezaghebbende Eichelmann in 2003 en 2013. In 2014 kreeg hij dezelfde titel van Gault Millau. Philipp is getrouwd met Eva Clüsserath die haar eigen wijndomein in de Moezel bezit. Naar verluidt heeft Philipp een hekel aan augustus: dan moet hij namelijk de verdeling maken van zijn Grosse Gewächse. Dat is vooral vervelend omdat de vraag steeds verder toeneemt en het aanbod klein is. Hij heeft dus eigenlijk voor iedereen te weinig. Niet zo vreemd, gezien het feit dat zijn GG’s tot 96 punten van Parker opleveren, hij door Eichelmann al 2 keer tot beste witte wijnmaker van Duitsland werd gekroond, in 2014 Wijnmaker van het jaar was bij Gault Millau en in 2015 bij Schlemmer Atlas en jaarlijks in Mainz tijdens de GG proeverij als één van de allerbesten uit de bus komt!
Wittmann blijft consequent kiezen voor kwaliteit en dat betekent dat hij alleen het fraaiste fruit uit zijn wijngaarden als GG uitbrengt. De rest gaat in de Westhofener en zelfs de Riesling Trocken wordt voor een deel met dit edele fruit gemaakt.
