De 2022 Vie di Romans Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc "Piere" is een verfijnde witte wijn uit de Friuli Isonzo DOC-regio in het noordoosten van Italië, geproduceerd door het gerenommeerde wijnhuis Vie di Romans. Deze wijn wordt exclusief gemaakt van Sauvignon Blanc-druiven en weerspiegelt het unieke terroir van de regio.
De druiven voor de "Piere" zijn afkomstig van de gelijknamige wijngaard, gelegen in Mariano del Friuli. De bodem bestaat voornamelijk uit kiezelhoudende en kalkrijke lagen, wat bijdraagt aan de mineraliteit en complexiteit van de wijn. Het klimaat, met warme dagen en koele nachten, bevordert een optimale rijping van de druiven. Na handmatige oogst worden de druiven zorgvuldig geselecteerd. De fermentatie vindt plaats bij gecontroleerde temperaturen tussen 16-19°C gedurende 14-18 dagen. De wijn rijpt vervolgens 8 maanden 'sur lie' in roestvrijstalen tanks, wat bijdraagt aan de textuur
De 2022 "Piere" Sauvignon Blanc opent met een helder bouquet van tropische bloemen en een vleugje jalapeño-peper. In de mond presenteert de wijn een levendige zuurgraad met tonen van grapefruit, limoen en subtiele minerale nuances. De textuur is rijk en de afdronk is verfrissend en langdurig. Deze wijn is een uitstekende begeleider van zeevruchten, gegrilde groenten en lichte pasta's. Serveer op een temperatuur van 10-12°C om de aromatische complexiteit volledig tot zijn recht te laten komen.Hoewel de wijn nu op dronk is, heeft hij het potentieel om zich verder te ontwikkelen en te verbeteren bij flesrijping tot 2035.

The Vie di Romans 2020 Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc Piere (with lees aging in stainless steel) opens to a bright bouquet that is redolent of tropical blossom, Tahitian flowers, sea salt and a greenish note of jalapeño pepper. The wine is linear, tight and expressive. Production is 61,300 bottles.
Vie di Romans completed construction on its new winery in 2023. The structure has three floors with a larger barrel room and a visitors center. Starting at the beginning of 2024, proprietor Gianfranco Gallo brought his wife and children into the winery management loop.

The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Piere is wildly fresh, with a vivid blend of crushed nectarines and lime zest complemented by hints of rosemary and crushed stone. It’s silky smooth yet full of zesty tension, with masses of mineral-drenched green apples and hints of spice propelled by vibrant acidity. The 2022 leaves the palate staining in primary concentration, youthfully intense and gently tannic, leaving a spicy sensation that lingers on and on. The balance here is otherworldly, as is its drinkability factor.

Utterly enticing from the first tilt of the glass and impossible to ignore, the 2022s from Vie di Romans display a combination of richness, depth of fruit and a core of zesty acidity that I find wildly attractive. These wines hail from an extremely warm and dry year with a healthy fruit set that resulted in larger clusters yet smaller berries. Limited use of drip irrigation was necessary to offset the drought conditions, yet was described by Matteo Gallo as “micro-irrigation”, giving only a tiny amount of water to vines to maintain their health. Cooling rain in late August into September brought balance to the equation, and while the Gallos harvested about ten days earlier than average, it still wasn’t as early as they originally feared it would be. Gallo explained that 2022 was one of their “Mediterranean-style vintages,” making comparisons to 2008 and 2018. I will say that the 2022s are ripe in style, with alcohol percentages in the 14 - 14.5% range, yet the harmony found within them is spellbinding. In fact, if I didn’t have the chance to taste these next to another vintage, their warm character wouldn’t have stood out at all. In the end, this is a fantastic set of wines that shouldn’t be missed by fans of Vie di Romans or Friuli itself. I also expect several of them to age remarkably well.

Het huis Vie di Romans is gevestigd in de Isonzo – het lagere gedeelte van Friuli – tussen de Adriatische Zee en Collio. Doordat het land overdag opwarmt en ‘s nachts weer afkoelt, waait het hier vaak. Deze omstandigheden zijn ideaal zijn voor wijnbouw. De wind blaast de druiven snel droog als ze nat zijn, daarom hoeven ze nauwelijks met bestrijdingsmiddelen te worden bewerkt.
Gianfranco Gallo van Vie di Romans was een van de eerste wijnmakers die potentie zag in de alluviale vlakte van Friuli. Dertig jaar geleden nam hij het domein over van zijn vader en in 1978 bracht hij zijn eerste wijn uit. Vanaf 1990 zijn bijna al zijn wijnen monocépages (gemaakt van een en dezelfde druif) uit verschillende wijngaarden. Gianfranco heeft een geheel eigen stijl van wijn maken. Hij is bijzonder nauw betrokken bij elk onderdeel van het proces: van het werk in de wijngaard tot in de kelder. Hij houdt de opbrengsten per hectare zo laag mogelijk en ziet toe op zeer streng gebruik van bestrijdingsmiddelen – het liefst géén. Met als resultaat grote, geconcentreerde en complexe wijnen die mensenlevens lang meegaan.
