De 2019 Lafite Rothschild is een blend van 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot en 1% Petit Verdot, geoogst van 19 september tot 7 oktober. Diep granaat-paars van kleur, hij rolt moeiteloos uit het glas met meeslepende aroma's van gebakken zwarte kersen, rijpe bramen en crème de cassis, gevolgd door hints van mokka, zoethout, gerookt vlees en Sichuan peper met een vleugje eucalyptus. Medium-bodied, de smaak is tegelijk etherisch gracieus en krachtig intens, met laag op laag van diepe rokerige, hartige smaken en decadent rijp fruit, omlijst door exquise, slibachtige tannines en net genoeg frisheid, eindigend met epische lengte. Dit is zo gepolijst en zeer krachtig, maar tegelijkertijd etherisch en verfijnd. De finish duurt minuten. Strak en harmonieus. Zo uitgebalanceerd, maar het zal prachtig verouderen en bijna gemaakt voor de oneindigheid.

2019 Bordeaux Primeurs Flash Review 2, The Wine Advocate
The 2019 Lafite Rothschild is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, harvested from the 19th of September to the 7th of October. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls effortlessly out of the glass with compelling notions of baked black cherries, ripe blackberries and crème de cassis followed by hints of mocha, licorice, smoked meats and Sichuan pepper with a waft of eucalyptus. Medium-bodied, the palate is at once ethereally graceful and powerfully intense, featuring layer upon layer of profound smoky, savory flavors and decadently ripe fruit, framed by exquisite, silt-like tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with epic length. In terms of flavor profile, this is a surprisingly (atypically) hedonic, forward expression, with notably lower acidity/higher pH (the pH is 3.9). The alcohol is 13.4%, just a tick higher than the 2018 (13.3%). And yet, the tannins here are unmistakably Lafite, featuring all the tannic grace, finesse and densely pixilated poise fans will expect. What an exciting paradox for the palate—bravo!
The Merlot in the 2019 grand vin is a “new wine” of Merlot for Lafite, according to technical director Eric Kohler. “Before, we only had three tanks of Merlot to choose from,” he explained. “Often, it was the same choice. Now, we have identified three plots of Merlot to co-vinify. The amounts were too little to be vinified separately, so they used to go into the blends. This makes a new Merlot lot for us. This year, this Merlot blend was just perfect for the grand vin. This addition of the new Merlot helped keep the balance.”
Regarding the 2019 vintage of Lafite’s very popular second wine: “This is the first time we used this much Cabernet Sauvignon in the Carruades blend,” Kohler told me. Usually it is more like 55% Cabernet with more Merlot. It is even more like Lafite this year!”

From: Bordeaux 2019: The Southwold Tasting (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild has a most earthy bouquet with warm gravel and black olive scents percolating through the black fruit. Warm bricks on a hot sunny afternoon. The palate is medium-bodied with gorgeous, saturated yet firm tannins that frame the layers of mineral-laden black fruit. This is a live wire, so tensile and focused towards the finish with a fabulously long aftertaste. Marvelous. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild screams Cabernet Sauvignon on the nose of intense black fruit, graphite and subtle minty aromas, supremely well-defined and revealing a hint of star anise with aeration. The medium-bodied palate is beautifully balanced, offering sappy black fruit, black pepper, graphite and just a touch of spice. This has more body, maybe even a touch more sinew than recent vintages, perhaps because of the reconfiguration of the Merlot parcels (see my note en primeur). Very persistent and almost uncharacteristically grippy on the finish, this is a gifted Lafite-Rothschild that will last 50+ years. It will certainly surpass the 2018 with continued bottle age.

De wijngaard van Château Lafite Rothschild bestaat uit drie hoofdgebieden: De hellingen rond het Château, het Carruades-plateau in het westen en een terrein van 4,5 hectare in Saint-Estèphe. De oppervlakte bedraagt 112 hectare. De grond bestaat uit fijn, diep grind vermengd met door de wind meegevoerd zand op een goed doorlatende en goed blootgestelde tertiaire kalksteenondergrond. De druivensoorten die hier worden verbouwd zijn Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc en Petit Verdot.
Hier werden de eerste stenen gelegd, werden de huizen van de wijnbouwers gebouwd en begrepen ze dat er iets ongewoons zou gebeuren. In de loop der jaren werd het huis dat uitkijkt op deze heuvel groter en een blauweregen klimplant klom tegen de muren op om generaties families te zien passeren voor wie het behoud van dit ecosysteem altijd de ultieme prioriteit is geweest. 150 jaar geleden plantte barones Betty, echtgenote van baron James, de enorme eikenbomen die onze wijngaard scheiden van de moerassen. Zij, hun kinderen en kleinkinderen, evenals de families van wijnbouwers die zich bij hen voegden, werkten nauwgezet om deze onberispelijke creatie te beschermen die hun door de natuur is nagelaten. Ze hebben veel zorg besteed aan het behoud van deze microkosmos bestaande uit bossen en moerassen, flora en fauna te midden waarvan de wijnstokken van Château Lafite Rothschild gedijen in deze bijna wilde osmose.
Als ultieme getuige van dit beschermde land pronken sommige wijnstokken nog steeds sierlijk met hun 140 jaar ongeënt leven. Ze ontsnapten aan de phylloxera die echter niemand anders spaarde! Dit onfeilbare deel van de wijnstokken blijft de wijnbouwers ontwijken, dezelfde die het, van het ene oogstjaar tot het andere, vormen, beschermen en koesteren in een poging deze perfecte compositie te verfijnen die hen keer op keer verbaast. Het is misschien geen toeval dat Lafite natuurlijk de titel "First of the First" verdiende op de Wereldtentoonstelling van Napoleon III. Het zal ook geen toeval zijn, als anderen er lang na ons over zullen spreken… Elk vat wordt individueel geproefd en alleen het beste wordt geselecteerd voor de uiteindelijke blend. Na het blenden rijpt de wijn 15 maanden in nieuwe eikenhouten vaten. De gisting vindt plaats gedurende 15 dagen bij een gecontroleerde temperatuur van 18°C. Voor de Grand Vin Château Lafite Rothschild worden alleen wijnstokken gebruikt die ouder zijn dan 10 jaar. Hoewel elke vintage uniek is, is er meestal een groot deel Cabernet Sauvignon, dan Merlot, met een kleine bijdrage van Petit Verdot.
