De familie Yllera heeft een lange geschiedenis van wijnmaken in het Spaanse Ribera del Duero, maar hun nieuwe project VivaltuS is al hun bekroning 2016 als hun allereerste jaargang. Een wijn die een belangrijke naam in Ribera del Duero' zal zijn in de ogen van Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez. Het stormachtige succes van de Vivaltus kan het landgoed gedeeltelijk neerleggen bij de legendarische adviseur Jean-Claude Berrouet, wijnmaker bij Château Pétrus en Dominus. Tim Atkin MW prijst de invloed van Berrouet en stelt dat dit, zelfs gezien zijn 'distinguished track record', echt 'een opmerkelijke wijn' is. Ook bijzonder is dat deze wijn wordt verdeeld via de Place du Bordeaux om zorg te dragen dat alleen serieuze en gerenommeerde wijnbedrijven zorgvuldig omgaan met deze wijn en natuurlijk is Grandcruwijnen een van deze bedrijven die direct en rechtstreeks kan inkopen.
De vintage 2018 is pas de derde vintage op de markt. Vivaltus is gemaakt van 98% Tempranillo aangevuld met 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. De invloed van Berrouet is echter zeer merkbaar: de wijnen voelen duidelijk Frans/Bordeaux aan in hun elegantie, frisheid en klassieke stijl. De wijnen komen uit zeer oude wijngaarden op 800-1.000 meter hoogte. De Vivaltus heeft een flinke vulling. Enerzijds Bordeaux-invloeden, maar zeer Spaans en echt Tempranillo-karakter in de kern. Gemaakt voor drinkbaarheid en verteerbaarheid. Kersen, tabak, aarde, vanille. Goed bewaarpotentieel. Traditioneel gemaakt, maar met moderne invloeden: een nieuwe interpretatie van Ribera del Duero. Zijdezachte gesmolten tannines en evoluerende textuur gevolgd door een lange, smakelijke afdronk.

2018 Vivaltus

The vintage to be released is the 2018 Vivaltus, which feels very shy, primary and closed and is developing at a glacial pace. The wine is elegant, subtle and insinuating, yet to develop the perfume and exuberance the 2016 has in the nose. It has a leafy twist that gives it freshness, and it has velvety tannins, great balance and elegance. It has the ingredients and the balance between them to develop nicely in bottle, but seeing how the 2016 is singing today, it would be a shame to pull the cork from the 2018.
I had already tasted the Vivaltus wines from 2016 to 2018 way before they were released. The 2018s are going to be sold through La Place de Bordeaux in September 2023, so I retasted them now. I also had a preview of future vintages, as the wines are released five years after the harvest but are bottled with an élevage of two years.
Vivaltus is the high-end project from the Yllera family with the help of Jean-Claude Berrouet and first-class Ribera del Duero grapes.

I was very pleasantly surprised by the bottled 2017 Vivaltus despite the fact that 2017 was a challenging year and was decimated by terrible frost in April that resulted in losses of up to 60% of the crop. The end of the season was warm and the harvest early, so the growing cycle was quite short. The wine is floral, perfumed, elegant and insinuating; the oak feels pretty integrated, and the palate is balanced with very good tannins (not as refined as those form the 2016 or 2018). A triumph over the adverse conditions of the vintage.

The eponymous 2016 Vivaltus was really impressive. I was already amazed at the unbottled sample, and the finished wine seems even better! It's a blend of Tempranillo with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, mostly from old vines. It fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and aged for around 12 months in French barriques, 20% of them new. But there's no oak in the nose, which is ethereal and perfumed, elegant and nuanced, with notes of violets, wild berries and herbs. The palate shows ultra-refined tannins and comes through as beautifully textured, with a fine, chalky minerality, very good precision, clean and focused flavors and a long, tasty finish. This is really amazing. 16,000 bottles were filled in July 2018. Prices had not yet been set, but when I first tasted it some 16 months ago, they were talking about something around $150...
Vivaltus is the new project in Ribera del Duero from the Yllera family. They purchase top-quality grapes from old vines and ferment and age the wines with the advice of Bordeaux guru Jean-Claude Berrouet. I have not yet seen any of the Vivaltus wines in the market. I tasted the bottled 2016s, but the bottles didn't have labels. I don't know when this will be released, and I already wrote about them (and was impressed) some 16 months ago. Vivaltus will soon be an important name in Ribera del Duero.
