Terra Tangra Winery

Terra Tangra was founded in 1999. The vineyards are located on the southwestern slopes of the Sakar Mountains and along the Maritsa River, Thracian Valley, Bulgaria. The winery produces a wide selection of red, white, and rosé wines – varietal and assembly wines, including limited boutique series. Widely recognized for its unique and award-winning wines, Terra Tangra is Bulgaria's first organically certified vineyard.

The combination of terroir and expertise of the oenologists at Terra Tangra led by the world-famous Xavier Meade (successor of a family with centuries of winemaking traditions from the St. Emilion region, Bordeaux, France) is quickly attracting the attention of international experts and wine connoisseurs. The vineyards of Terra Tangra extend over 400 hectares. The many sunny days throughout the year, the constant wind, and scarce rainfall in combination with the southern exposure provide excellent conditions for growing grapes and producing wine. Terra Tangra produces wine from selected grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Mavrud, Melnik, Rubin and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer, Semillon, Tamianka. The variety of terroirs allows Terra Tangra to get the best out of the different grape varieties. The vineyards are divided into three micro-regions: decomposed granite for the Merlot that won the highest prize for Bulgarian wines – Golden Rhyton Award; Coarse-textured maroon for the Cabernet Sauvignon that world-renowned wine writer Andrew Jefford called “The Best Bulgarian Varietal Wine” in the pages of Financial Times shortly after the wine was launched; Sandy soil for Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Thanks to the natural resources and the efforts of the team of agricultural scientists, all Terra Tangra vines are grown in an environmentally friendly way and every step to bottle is tailored to the requirements of wine production while preserving biodiversity (e.g. only wooden poles are used in the vineyards and all harmful chemicals are strictly avoided). The European certificate for organic viticulture and gold medals from Mundus Vini BioFach in Nürnberg, Germany confirmed Terra Tangra's position as the first Bulgarian organic wine producer.

The vineyards are carefully monitored to determine the exact start of the harvest. The grapes are picked by hand, placed in crates, and sorted. Only the best grapes are used. After de-stem removal, each batch is vinified individually using traditional techniques, controlled temperature, and duration of fermentation. The intensity and intervals of cooling are determined individually for each vessel. Careful blending ensures the quality and identity of each harvest. The final blend is a combination of the best properties of the various components. Some seemingly indefinable elements from different batches only reveal their remarkable properties after careful mixing in specific proportions. Fermentation takes place in a classic way - with attention to every detail and careful storage and extraction of the grapes' natural phenols. The wines are aged in French oak barrels – each wine for a predetermined period of time, while sediments are periodically removed. Bottling is done in the wine cellar, which ensures thorough supervision of the entire production cycle.

Terra Tangra continues its pursuit of excellence by offering not only familiar flavors but also new enhanced wine experiences. The wine production is in line with the latest trends and taste preferences in Europe. As an innovative wine producer, Terra Tangra continuously invests in new developments and technologies. Vino-Lok glass cork (glass-on-glass closure) is used for white, rosé, and certain red wines. This way the wines keep their taste qualities much longer and the aroma and taste are not affected by the closure. The glass cap also ensures 100% safe storage and naturally solves all problems related to cork or TCA.
