Description
2015 Redheads Studio Return Of The Living Red
A tribute to the Portuguese grape varieties that were planted in abundance throughout Australia about a century ago. They were used to make the excellent fortified wines that are still made today, but in very small quantities. During the last 30 years, with government encouragement, Portuguese varieties such as Touriga - famous in the lush velvety Portugal ports - have been torn out and replaced by more common varieties such as Shiraz and Chardonnay. The last remains of these forgotten 'dead' varieties have been traced by Redheads Studio, taught to make them a beautiful wine. And the result is Return of the Living Red.
Attractive aromas of dark red and black fruit. Earth and spices layered with violets and floral notes that end up in cocoa, anise and cloves. There are strong but refined tannins, perfectly balanced against a fresh acid backbone. Dense, rich fruit in the center of the palate that overflows to a white pepper and exotic spices.
We recommend serving this as food wine. An ideal combination with a rich steak and mushroom pie, a very slow cooked brisket or richly roasted vegetables and Parmesan lasagna.

It all started with a few Aussie winemakers who went to France to show the 'old hands' some new tricks there. Australian wine had conquered the world in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why Tony Laithwaite brought some Aussies to France. It was there that the very beginning of RedHead's new viticultural movement was laid.
In a small shed in McLaren Vale, a former Indian restaurant, some winemakers took on the challenge of making their dream come true: making beautiful, creative wines in small volumes with primary focus on quality.
They wanted to make wines without being bothered by all kinds of business worries, which resulted in an explosion of creativity and experiments.
Meanwhile, winery Redheads is making great international progress and they still give young talents the opportunity to let their creativity and talents loose on the best grapes in the region. Redheads Wines says of itself: “A free-spirited, movement liberating the best grapes from the premium labels to make wines with soul, character and personality”
