For the Klarewijn Podcast, together with Antoin Peeters and Joep Speet MV from Pallas Wines, we have put together a tasting box containing 6 beautiful Tuscan Top wines in different price ranges. The Tuscany region is undoubtedly the most famous wine region in Italy. When you say Tuscany, you think of wine. And in particular the Chianti, which has been exported for decades. Among the classified wines of the whole of Italy, Chianti continues to lead in terms of production volume, along with Sangiovese di Romagna and Soave from the Veneto. In the 1970s, a so-called 'modern renaissance' in the wine field took place in Tuscany. A drastic reduction in production and the use of modern techniques in the vineyard and cellars eventually led to 6 DOCG classifications and 33 DOCs, which together account for 45% of the total vineyard area (63,500 hectares). The region also has 5 IGTs.

In addition to the Chianti Classico, the following wines have received a DOCG classification: Brunello di Montalcino (1980), Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (1981), Chianti (1984), Carmignano (1991) and the Vernaccia di San Gimignano (1993). The most prestigious wine of Tuscany has to be the Brunello di Montalcino. This DOCG wine comes from the area around Montalcino, south of Siena. It was the Biondi-Santi family that made waves more than a century ago with a clone of the Sangiovese, the Brunello. The wine already obtained a DOCG classification in 1980, as the absolute first in Italy. The Rosso di Montalcino DOC is the younger brother of the Brunello di Montalcino.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, also DOCG, comes from the hills around the town of the same name. A dry, powerful, full and balanced wine, good with various meat dishes and game. The same applies to the Rosso di Montepulciano as to the Rosso di Montalcino.

During the Podcast the wines below will be tasted. Click here to listen to the Podcast and what could be more fun to taste the accompanying wines and that is possible with this tasting box which we have priced extra interesting.

Weingut Polz is located on the Grassnitzberg in Austria's southern wine region, Südsteiermark. This family business has a rich history that dates back to 1912, when Johann Polz took his first steps in viticulture. Today, the winery is run by the fourth generation, who continue to improve the quality of their grapes and wines with sustainable viticulture and modern technologies.

Although Austria is known for Grüner Veltliner, it is the Sauvignon Blanc grape that steals the show in Südsteiermark. About one fifth of the vineyard area in this region is planted with this grape variety. Sauvignon blanc thrives in the hilly landscape and the relatively mild climate with cool nights. The wines range from fresh and fruity to subtle and elegant.

Weingut Polz offers a wide range of wines, including the well-known Sauvignon Blanc, Weissburgunder and Morillon (local name for Chardonnay). All grapes are harvested by hand. The vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks or large wooden barrels. Everything is aimed at preserving the grape's own aromas and freshness.

In addition to making beautiful wines, Weingut Polz is also focused on sustainability and the preservation of biodiversity, and they try to minimize the impact of their winegrowing activities on the environment. They are currently in the process of converting to organic viticulture.
