Description
The Champagne Krug Brut Rosé 28th Edition is one of the most refined and expressive rosé champagnes in the world. A masterful blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier, with a small amount of red wine for color and depth. This cuvée embodies Krug's signature style: complex, refined, layered, and with an unparalleled balance of power and elegance.
Origin & style
The Krug Brut Rosé 28th Edition is composed of 32 wines from five different vintages, with the 2016 vintage as the main base. The blend consists of approximately 44% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, and 26% Meunier. A small portion of the Pinot Noir was vinified as a red wine and added to give the champagne its subtle salmon-pink hue and refined structure. As with every Krug cuvée, this edition was also aged in small oak barrels, which adds depth, complexity, and a characteristic touch of toast.
Vinification
- Blend: 32 different base wines from five vintages (2016 to 2012).
- Red wine component: 10% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, Ambonnay and Bouzy for colour and structure.
- Maturation: at least 7 years “sur lie” in the Krug cellars for maximum refinement and complexity.
- Dosage: approximately 6 g/l – Brut .

A champagne that is simultaneously powerful, delicate, and deeply emotional—as only Krug can be.

- Meat dishes: veal tartare, duck or pheasant with red fruit compote.
- Japanese cuisine: tuna sashimi, wagyu tataki, or sushi with tuna and soy.

Offering aromas of peonies, orange peel, cinnamon, dried herbs, rose petals and ripe red berries, the NV Rosé 28ème Edition possesses a medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated palate with a vinous, creamy core of fruit framed by a vibrant, enrobing mid-palate that leads into a nicely phenolic, long, salty and mineral finish. This rendition—a blend of 58% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 17% Pinot Meunier—is one of this house's most powerful and well-executed Champagne rosé ever produced. It comprises 32 wines from vintages spanning 2010 to 2016, with the latter as the base, and red wine sourced from Aÿ.
When I met Julie Cavil, Krug’s Chef de Caves, in July, the extensive construction at Joseph—the name the house has given to the new winery in the heart of Ambonnay—was nearing completion. During the visit, I had the opportunity to taste the latest rendition of the cuvée, the 172ème Edition, based on the 2016 vintage, alongside some of the oldest cuvées and the newly released Clos d’Ambonnay from the 2008 vintage.

History of Krug
Krug was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary German immigrant who sought to create the most widely distributed champagne possible. He strongly believed in the producer of Champagne of consistent quality, proven by the weather conditions from year to year. The Krug family carried on the legacy and passed on their expertise from generation to generation. Krug has been in the family for years. It was managed by members of the Krug family until the 1960s and today it is part of the LVMH group but remains active with an emphasis on tradition and quality. They adhere to a philosophy of creating Champagnes that are based on the character of each specific vintage and that express the terroir of the vineyards. They are also known for their blending expertise, often incorporating a range of reserve wines into their cuvées to maintain a consistent house style.
Champagnes from Krug
Krug shows a great range of Champagnes, the most famous of which is their "Krug Grande Cuvée". Considered their flagship Champagne, this non-vintage blend is made with a blend of over 120 different wines from multiple vintages. Krug also has vintage Champagnes, including their famous "Krug Vintage". In addition to their famous cuvées, Krug also produces numerous single-vineyard Champagnes. "Krug Clos du Mesnil" and "Krug Clos d'Ambonnay" are made from grapes sourced from specific walled vineyards and are very popular among collectors and connoisseurs. Krug champagnes are known for their aging potential. This producer recommends aging their Champagnes so that the complex flavors and aromas can fully develop.
