Persoonlijke gegevens
The 2025 Perla del Garda Ora is a Lugana DOP from Lonato del Garda, south of Lake Garda. The wine is made from Turbiana with a small proportion of Chardonnay and is fully fermented and aged in stainless steel. The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 150 to 250 meters on calcareous clay soils, which provide structure and freshness. Due to the influence of Lake Garda, the grapes ripen gradually, retaining their acidity. The style is clear and crisp, with notes of citrus, apple, and a light minerality. A pure, dry white wine with a balanced structure.
Perla del Garda Winery
Perla del Garda is located in the south of Lake Garda and focuses entirely on Lugana. The estate works with modern techniques, but with respect for nature and the grape. The style is crisp, pure, and recognizable, with an emphasis on freshness and balance. For more information about the winery, see the Winery tab.
Lugana region and location
Lugana lies south of Lake Garda, on the border of Lombardy and Veneto. The vineyards of Perla del Garda are located in Lonato del Garda, in a gently hilly area overlooking the lake.
Lake Garda plays an important role here. The large water surface acts as a natural temperature regulator. During the day, it provides cooling in the warm summer months, while retaining heat at night. This results in smaller temperature fluctuations and a longer growing season.
This ensures that the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. They retain their fresh acidity while still developing sufficient ripeness and aromatic depth. This is precisely what makes Lugana so recognizable: freshness combined with structure.
Climate and influence of Lake Garda
The climate is temperate and relatively mild, with influences from both the Alpine and Mediterranean regions. Warm summers are tempered by wind currents from the lake, while winters are milder than in many other Northern Italian regions.
The constant air circulation also helps keep the vineyards healthy. Fungal pressure remains limited, requiring less intervention in the vineyard. This contributes to a pure style in the final wine.
Thanks to these conditions, Turbiana retains its fresh character while simultaneously developing sufficient concentration and structure.
Soil and terroir Lugana
The soils in this part of Lugana are moraine and consist of calcareous clay, formed by glacial activity. These compact soils retain water well, which is important during warm periods.
The combination of clay and limestone produces wines with both body and tension. The clay provides structure and roundness, while the limestone contributes to freshness and a light minerality in the finish.
Grapes and vinification
The Ora is made from Turbiana, supplemented with a small percentage of Chardonnay. Turbiana provides freshness, light spiciness, and a distinctive structure, while Chardonnay ensures a subtle roundness.
The harvest is carried out manually between late August and early September, during which only healthy and ripe grapes are selected.
After gentle pressing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of around 15 degrees. This lasts approximately 8 to 10 days. Subsequently, the wine matures further in steel, without the influence of wood, to preserve its pure character.
Style and taste Lugana
The wine has a clear, light yellow color. The aroma reveals fresh notes of citrus, lime, and green apple, complemented by light blossom and a hint of almond.
On the palate, it is lively and fresh, with a beautiful balance between acidity and roundness. The light influence of Chardonnay provides a soft texture, while the Turbiana gives the wine tension and length.
The finish is crisp and clean, with a subtle mineral touch typical of Lugana.

Perla del Garda is located south of Lake Garda, in the area between Desenzano and Sirmione. The estate covers around 40 hectares of vineyards on the morainic hills near Lonato del Garda. The focus is mainly on Turbiana, complemented by varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Riesling and Incrocio Manzoni. For red wines, the estate works with grapes including Rebo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Location and terroir Garda
The vineyards are situated on the southern slopes of Lake Garda, on soils formed by glacial deposits. These morainic soils consist of calcareous clay and stones, relatively poor and well-draining. This forces the vines to root deeply in search of water and nutrients, contributing to concentration and structure in the wines.
The proximity to Lake Garda creates a moderated climate. The lake acts as a temperature buffer, reducing extreme heat and softening cooler nights. As a result, the grapes ripen gradually and retain their natural acidity, a key characteristic of Lugana.
Prandini family history
The Prandini family has a long agricultural background rooted in the Verona area. For generations, the family worked the land, passing down knowledge and experience. The move into wine production began in 2000, when Giovanna and Ettore Prandini started exploring the potential of the morainic hills south of Lake Garda.
After several harvests and careful observation, the first estate wine was produced in 2006: a Lugana named Perla. At the same time, a modern winery was built among the vineyards to allow for fast and efficient grape processing.
Vineyard approach
At Perla del Garda, the focus is clearly on vineyard work. There are no fixed schedules; decisions are made based on each vintage. Climate conditions, ripeness and grape health determine the timing of the harvest and subsequent steps.
Harvesting is done entirely by hand. Grapes are collected in small boxes and quickly transported to the winery. The maximum distance between vineyard and cellar is about one kilometre, minimizing oxidation and preserving fruit quality.
Winemaking and technique
An important part of the production process is the use of gravity in the winery. The gravity-flow system reduces mechanical intervention, helping to preserve the purity of the fruit.
Winemaking is focused on precision and control, using modern techniques to support rather than dominate the character of the grape and terroir. For white wines in particular, the emphasis is on freshness, clarity and structure.
Grapes and wine styles
The key grape is Turbiana, also known as Trebbiano di Lugana. It forms the backbone of the Lugana wines and is valued for its fresh acidity, subtle aromatic profile and ageing potential.
In addition, Perla del Garda works with both international and local varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Riesling for whites. For reds, grapes such as Rebo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are used. Across the range, the style remains focused on balance and drinkability.
Sustainability and development
Sustainability plays an increasing role within the estate. Part of the vineyards is farmed organically, and since 2016 the winery has produced certified organic wines. The decision to certify the production chain reflects a commitment to transparency and quality control.
Recognition and quality
The quality of Perla del Garda has been recognized over the years. Early on, the estate received a place among the 100 best wines of Italy for Madre Perla. Later, it was awarded Tre Bicchieri by Gambero Rosso for the Lugana Superiore Madonna della Scoperta.
