Nani Rizzi Winery

Nani Rizzi is a family business based in Valdobbiadene, in the heart of the Prosecco DOCG zone. The estate focuses on producing wines that reflect the hilly terroirs of this region. In addition to sparkling wines, Nani Rizzi also produces still wines such as this Tranquillo, in which the purity of the grapes and the terroir take center stage. More information about the winery can be found under the Winery tab.

The Tranquillo

The Tranquillo is the first still white wine from Nani Rizzi, sourced from the finest plots in Valdobbiadene – the 'Grand Cru area' of the Prosecco region. The wine is very limited and is sold almost exclusively on-site at the winery, but given our long relationship with Nani Rizzi, we are always allowed to include a handful of cases with our delivery.

Region, climate and location

The wine comes from Valdobbiadene, one of the most prestigious areas within the Prosecco DOCG. The vineyards are situated on hills with good sun exposure and natural drainage, which contributes to healthy grapes and good ripening.

The climate is temperate with influences from the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. This results in warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to retain their freshness and aromatic precision.

The combination of altitude, slope, and climate results in wines with a good balance between ripe fruit, freshness, and a light salinity.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The vineyards are located in the municipality of Valdobbiadene and are harvested by hand in September. The grapes are carefully selected to ensure quality and balance.

The wine is made from 90% Glera and 10% Perera. This combination creates an aromatic profile with fresh fruit and a subtle floral and spicy complexity. Yields are kept controlled to preserve the concentration and purity of the fruit.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest takes place by hand in September. After picking, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation follows at a controlled temperature.

Unlike Prosecco, this wine is not made sparkling, but vinified as a still wine. As a result, the structure and character of the grapes and the terroir come to the fore more clearly.

The wine is bottled relatively young to preserve its freshness and aromatic expression.

Color, smell and taste

The wine has an intense straw-yellow color with light green reflections. On the nose, aromas of apple, pear, and white flowers emerge, complemented by a subtle hint of vanilla.

On the palate, the wine is fresh and harmonious, with a good balance between fruit and acidity. The fruit profile is bright and accessible, with notes of ripe apple and pear.

The wine has a light minerality and a fresh, slightly salty undertone. The finish is clean, balanced, and refreshing, with pleasant drinkability. Also worth mentioning is the moderate alcohol content of only 12%.

Development and drinking window

The 2025 Nani Rizzi Tranquillo DOCG is meant to be drunk young, when the freshness and fruit expression are at their best. The drinking window is between now and approximately 3 to 4 years – precisely then the wine is so delightfully fresh, fruity, and surprisingly complex.

Nani Rizzi is a beautiful family business from Valdobbiadene, located in the Italian province of Treviso. Nani Rizzi winery has been growing and producing high quality Prosecco for over 100 years, with grapes from the beautiful hills of Guia. All Nani Rizzi wines originate from the valuable Glera grape, which comes from the famous and picturesque hills of Valdobbiadene. The Glera grape is of very high quality and also represents the deep-rooted and strong roots of the history, family and terroir of winery Nani Rizzi. By combining the use of traditional methods with new innovative techniques, the grapes are transformed into excellent, highly qualified products. Nani Rizzi therefore has a wide range of sparkling wine, which more than represents the excellent quality of the terroir. There is a subdivision of 3 different product types: Cru Nani Rizzi, Docg Nani Rizzi and Doc Nani Rizzi.

The winery was founded by Giovanni who was nicknamed “Nani Rizzi”. Later the winery was greatly expanded by his son Ergi, after which it was taken over again by grandson Denis Spagnol. Denis still cultivates and produces according to the time-honored traditions of his father and grandfather with equally great love and care for the vines and the area.

Nanio Rizzi is one of the few wineries to carry the Prosecco Superiore label. You have Prosecco and Prosecco Superiore and that makes a world of difference. To be able to feed Prosecco Superiore DOCG, strict rules must be met:

- The grapes must come from the Conegliano Valdobbiadene region and the vinification must also take place here. The following municipalities fall within this region: Conegliano, San Vendemiano, Colle Umberto, Vittorio Veneto, Tarzo, Cison di Valmarino, San Pietro di Feletto, Refrontolo, Susegana, Pieve di Soligo, Farra di Soligo, Follina, Miane, Vidor and Valdobbiadene.

- The minimum amount of Glera (the official name of the prosecco grape) in the wine must be at least 85%.

- The maximum yield per hectare is 135 hectoliters per hectare. This is substantially higher with the regular Proseccos

- The maximum amount of juice compared to the picked fruit is 70%. So from 100 kilos of grapes, a maximum of 70 liters of juice can be squeezed.

- Bottling must take place in the province of Treviso.

Only bottles produced according to the stated rules are allowed to carry this label on the bottle, which is usually taped to the back of the capsule. The label also often mentions 'DOCG' or is written in full: Denominazione de Origine Controllata et Garantita. Also the terms 'Prosecco Superiore' and 'Valdobbiadene' and 'Conegliano' may only be used with DOCG proseccos. Enough way to see if the prosecco you have before you meets the strict DOCG requirements!
