Persoonlijke gegevens
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira in the Alentejo region. This is one of the oldest wine regions in Portugal. In the beautiful Alentejo, Herdade do Sobroso enjoys a perfect location with its vineyards situated on the banks of the Guadiana River and its tributary, the Rio dos Patos, or the River of the Ducks. Consequently, the ducks on the labels are its trademark. It is the perfect setting for the ripening of the grapes, a luxury few vineyards enjoy. This partly explains why this winery can produce very fine wines, as there is never a water shortage. In addition to the fact that there is sufficient water, this region is the only one within the Alentejo influenced by the ocean, which ensures healthy ripening.
The Blanco from the Cellar Selection (or Branco in Portuguese) is an exceptional white wine made from hand-picked Antao Vaz and Albarino (Alvarinho) grapes, aged for 9 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. Fresh, elegant, complex, and opulent, with notes of white and tropical fruit and a hint of nutmeg. The palate is fresh, smooth, and full of flavor, with an elegant and very long finish. Due to the subtle character of this wine, sea bream and turbot are particularly well-suited. The Cellar Selection wines are among the top wines of Herdade do Sobroso—always available in very limited quantities.

1. Grilled sea bass with fennel and lemon
The fresh acidity and tropical fruit notes in the wine perfectly support the light salinity of the fish. Fennel and lemon accentuate the elegant finish of the wine.
2. Tagliatelle with shrimp and lemon cream sauce
The creamy texture of the wine pairs well with the delicate sauce, while its fresh character balances the shellfish.
3. Chicken roulade with apricot and sage
The light spiciness of sage and the sweetness of apricot harmonize with the exotic fruit aromas of the wine. The soft mouthfeel pairs beautifully with the juiciness of the chicken.
4. Quiche with goat cheese, zucchini, and pine nuts
The lively acidity freshens the rich goat cheese, and the roasted nuttiness of the pine nuts complements the light woody notes of the wine.
5. Ravioli filled with lobster and saffron butter
The full structure of the wine forms an elegant bridge with the creamy mouthfeel of the saffron butter, while the freshness maintains tension in the whole.
6. Pan-fried veal tenderloin with cauliflower cream and apple capers
The subtle fruity acidity and oak aging in the wine enhance the mild flavor of the veal. The cauliflower cream provides texture that complements the wine, while the apple capers add a fresh touch.

In the soft Alentejo light you’ll find Herdade do Sobroso. A place where wine and landscape go hand in hand, without fuss. Perfect for anyone who loves authenticity.
Herdade do Sobroso history & location
Herdade do Sobroso is located in Vidigueira, in the warm heart of the Alentejo, close to the Alqueva dam and on the banks of the Guadiana River. The estate was purchased in the early 2000s by the family of Sofia and Filipe, who were still students at the time. She studied animal science, he studied oenology. Together they built a wine estate that has since become a well-known name in the region.
The location is quite special. In the north, the Mendro mountains protect the vineyards, while in the south the plains stretch endlessly. To the east flows the Guadiana River, bringing freshness and a unique microclimate. This gives the wines of Sobroso their extra depth and character.
Which grape varieties grow here?
Across 60 hectares of vineyards you’ll find both native and international grape varieties. For red wines: Aragonez, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Alfrocheiro, and Petit Verdot. For whites: Antão Vaz, Arinto, Alvarinho, Verdelho, and Perrum. This mix allows them to produce both powerful blends and fresh, fruit-driven styles.
Specialties of Herdade do Sobroso
One of the highlights in their portfolio is the ‘Anas’ range, named after the river that flowed through this region in Roman times. The gravelly soils and the proximity of water result in elegant, structured wines.
A few fun facts
- The estate covers more than 1,600 hectares, with thousands of cork oaks alongside the vineyards.
- There’s more to experience than just wine: jeep safaris, hot-air balloon rides at sunrise, kayaking, and cycling through the vineyards turn it into a full experience.
- The estate restaurant serves typical Alentejo dishes, complemented by traditional sweets such as sericaia and torta de laranja.
Herdade do Sobroso as an experience
Herdade do Sobroso is more than a winery. It’s a place where landscape, gastronomy, and hospitality come together. You don’t just taste the wines, you also feel the calm and openness of the Alentejo countryside.
