La Sirène de Giscours 2025 proves once again that a second wine does not automatically have to be a simple wine. In 2025, Cabernet Sauvignon is more strongly represented than ever before, at no less than 86%, resulting in an exceptionally structured, refined, and energetic Margaux. With scores of up to 94-95 points, this vintage is among the most impressive editions of La Sirène ever produced.

Winery Château Giscours

Château Giscours belongs to the historic elite of Margaux and has been classified as Troisième Grand Cru Classé since 1855. Under the leadership of the Albada Jelgersma family, the château has undergone an impressive rise in quality over the past decades. The vineyards are situated on deep Garonne gravel soils known for their excellent drainage and ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. Moreover, in 2025, the family celebrates its thirtieth anniversary at the helm of the estate, a period in which Giscours has grown into one of the most respected names of the Médoc.

The Siren of Giscours

La Sirène de Giscours is much more than a classic second wine. The château describes this cuvée as a freer and more instinctive interpretation of the Margaux terroir, with its own identity within the Giscours family. The name refers to the siren, which has been part of the estate's iconography for centuries and symbolizes elegance, allure, and character. In 2025, that character comes to the fore stronger than ever thanks to the exceptionally high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Volume 2025 in Margaux

The growing season was characterized by a warm and dry summer, followed by cool nights in September. These large temperature variations ensured slow and controlled ripening, preserving freshness, aromatic precision, and natural tension. At Giscours, they worked with living soils, permanent vegetation between the rows, and careful protection of the grapes against heat by deliberately refraining from defoliation. As a result, the grapes remained remarkably fresh and aromatic despite the warm conditions.

The harvest took place between September 3 and 25. Thanks to multiple selection rounds in the vineyard, only perfectly ripe fruit could be harvested. The low yields and small berries resulted in extra concentration without loss of elegance.

Grapes, vinification and aging

The blend consists of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and 7% Petit Verdot. As a result, La Sirène contains more Cabernet Sauvignon than ever before. The grapes were selected both visually and by hand, after which fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. Maceration lasted approximately 35 days at controlled temperatures. Subsequently, the wine aged for twelve months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new. This approach yields a wine that combines the classic refinement of Margaux with added structure, precision, and aging potential.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine presents itself as a deep ruby red. The nose opens with aromas of ripe plums, blackcurrants, flowers, and violets, followed by notes of chocolate, new leather, liquorice, spices, and subtle graphite tones. The high Cabernet fraction gives the wine extra definition and a beautiful classic Margaux signature.

The taste is refined yet powerful. Dark fruit, black cherries, and cassis are supported by fresh acidity and very fine-grained tannins. The structure is remarkably serious for a second wine, with a combination of energy, freshness, tension, and length that normally brings to mind a grand vin. The finish lingers for a long time with notes of spices, red and black fruit, graphite, and a subtle mineral freshness.

Reviews from the international wine press

Antonio Galloni (92-94 points) calls La Sirène de Giscours 2025 a "very serious second wine" and emphasizes the exceptional concentration, structure, and quality. William Kelley of The Wine Advocate (89-91 points) praises the precision, the bright fruit, and the powdery tannins. James Suckling (92-93 points) speaks of a refined and energetic wine with a lively character and beautiful freshness.

Other international critics are also enthusiastic. Yves Beck rates the wine 94-95 points and praises its harmony and freshness. Jane Anson speaks of "beautiful juicy depths," while Georgie Hindle of Decanter describes the wine as flawless, energetic, and particularly attractive. According to many tasters, the combination of freshness, structure, and refinement makes this vintage one of the strongest editions of La Sirène ever produced.

Giscours was in a dubious state when Nicolas Tari acquired it in 1954. Substantial investments followed and quality improved by leaps and bounds. In 1995 Giscours came into the possession of the Dutch grocer (supermarkets to Super de Boer and Edah) Eric Albada Jelgersma, who also invested heavily here, just like at his other Château du Tertre property and further improved the quality through a rigorous replanting and replanting program. The cellars were shed and new equipment was purchased. Today Giscours is again “the grand seigneur” it once was and worthy of a 3rd cru. With 200 ha of which 80 ha of vineyard one of the greatest assets in the Médoc.
