Persoonlijke gegevens
The 2025 Egon Müller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett is a classic Saar Riesling from one of Germany's most respected wineries. Within the Egon Müller range, the Braune Kupp is known for a slightly riper and spicier style than the renowned Scharzhofberger, yet with the same refinement and precision that have made the house famous worldwide.
Egon Müller's Kabinett wines are among the most elegant examples of Riesling from the Saar. With their low alcohol content, lively acidity, and refined fruit sweetness, they combine freshness and depth in a way unique to this cool wine region.
Weingut Egon Müller and the Scharzhof
Weingut Egon Müller is located on the historic Scharzhof estate in Wiltingen, in the Saarland section of the Mosel. The estate has a history dating back to the 18th century and has been run by the Müller family for generations. Under Egon Müller's leadership, the winery has become one of the most prestigious Riesling producers in the world.
The estate's focus is almost entirely on Riesling. The wines are made in a classic style that emphasizes finesse, precision, and terroir expression. The estate's main vineyards are the renowned Scharzhofberger and Wiltinger Braune Kupp, two terroirs each with their own distinct character.
The Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard
The Wiltinger Braune Kupp vineyard, situated on slopes just outside the village of Wiltingen, is one of the historically significant vineyards of the Saar. The soils here consist primarily of slate, a rock that can retain heat and simultaneously contributes to the typical mineral structure of the wines from this region.
Compared to the cool Scharzhofberg vineyard, the Braune Kupp vineyard enjoys a slightly warmer climate. As a result, the grapes here often develop a riper and more expressive fruit profile. The wines from this vineyard often display a combination of ripe stone fruit, spice, and minerality.
This terroir produces Rieslings with a little more roundness and spicy complexity, while retaining the fresh acidity of the Saar.
Cabinet according to Egon Müller
At Weingut Egon Müller, the grapes' sugar content isn't the sole basis for determining the various Prädikat levels. For Kabinett, the grapes must be fully ripe, but not overripe.
In the cool climate of the Saar, the grapes can reach their full physiological ripeness while maintaining relatively low sugar levels. This results in wines with a low alcohol content but a pronounced aromatic intensity.
Egon Müller's Kabinett wines typically contain only about 7 to 10 percent alcohol. They are analytically fruity sweet, but thanks to their crisp acidity, they can be surprisingly dry and crisp.
Vinification and maturation
The 2025 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett is made from 100 percent Riesling. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected in the vineyard.
After gentle pressing, the must ferments with natural yeasts in large, traditional wooden barrels known as Fuders. These barrels are old and neutral, and don't impart pronounced woody aromas. They do, however, ensure a calm fermentation and a gentle development of structure.
Fermentation usually stops naturally when some of the natural sugar remains in the wine. This creates the characteristic balance between residual sweetness and fresh acidity typical of Saar Riesling.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the 2025 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett shows a bright, light yellow colour with fresh green reflections.
On the nose, the wine combines fresh citrus aromas with riper stone fruits like white peach and apricot. Floral notes of blossom and subtle spicy nuances characteristic of this vineyard also emerge.
On the palate, the wine is light and lively. The fresh acidity adds tension and precision, while a refined fruity sweetness provides balance and depth. Flavors of citrus, apple, and ripe stone fruit are supported by a mineral undertone.
The finish is elegant and energetic with a nice balance between fruit, acidity and minerality.
Maturation potential
Although Kabinett wines are very appealing even when young, they can age surprisingly well with proper storage. The crisp acidity and balance of fruit and sweetness allow these wines to develop for ten years or more.
With bottle aging, more complex aromas of honey, dried citrus, and subtle spice develop. Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett retains its characteristic freshness.
Drinking window
The 2025 Egon Müller Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett can already offer great pleasure when young, thanks to its fresh fruit and lively acidity. With a few years of bottle aging, the wine develops more aromatic complexity.
