Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2025 reveals a more refined and restrained side of Saint-Émilion. Hailing from a small, cool terroir opposite Château Ausone, this wine combines depth with freshness, ripe fruit with tension, and structure with striking elegance. A Saint-Émilion for lovers of precision and aging potential.
Château Moulin Saint-Georges
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is a small and relatively unknown jewel within Saint-Émilion. The estate, covering only seven hectares, has been managed by the Vauthier family since 1921, the same family behind the iconic Château Ausone. Situated opposite Ausone, Moulin Saint-Georges shares not only the philosophy of precision and terroir expression but also an exceptionally interesting location.
The château is situated on west- and northwest-facing slopes on the south side of the village of Saint-Émilion. This cooler exposure gives the wine a distinct style: slightly darker, more serious, and more structured than many other Saint-Émilions. As a result, Moulin Saint-Georges has long been a quiet favorite among collectors and enthusiasts of classic Right Bank Bordeaux. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.
Origin and terroir
The vineyards of Moulin Saint-Georges are situated on limestone and clay-rich slopes that naturally retain more freshness. In a warm year like 2025, this location proved to be of great value. The west- and northwest-facing slopes offered a natural counterbalance to the heatwaves of June and August, preserving tension and freshness.
The terroir yields wines with a deeper, more restrained expression of Saint-Émilion. Less broad and opulent, but rather more precise and layered. The average age of the vines is approximately 37 years, which lends extra concentration and depth to the fruit.
Grapes and vinification
The blend of Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2025 consists of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Merlot forms the heart of the wine and provides a rich, enveloping structure, while Cabernet Franc adds freshness, precision, and aromatic tension.
The grapes were harvested by hand on September 11 and 12 for the Merlot and on September 17 and 18 for the Cabernet Franc. After careful selection, vinification by plot followed in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with gentle extraction. The wine then ages for approximately 18 months in new oak barriques. Additionally, Château Moulin Saint-Georges is in the process of converting to organic farming.
Style and taste profile
Château Moulin Saint-Georges 2025 displays a deep ruby red color and a refined aromatic profile of red and dark fruits, complemented by subtle spiciness and a characteristic freshness derived from the clay-rich soils. The wine feels rich and layered, yet maintains tension and precision.
On the palate, the wine combines an enveloping texture with refined elegance. The tannins are silky and precise, while the freshness provides energy and length. It is precisely the combination of ripe fruit, a cool terroir, and the refined influence of Cabernet Franc that makes Moulin Saint-Georges 2025 particularly balanced. A wine that already shows charm in its youth, but will benefit especially from additional bottle aging.
A hidden name within Saint-Émilion
While much attention is focused on the big names of Saint-Émilion, Château Moulin Saint-Georges remains relatively discreet. It is precisely this that makes this wine so interesting. Under the leadership of the Vauthier family, a wine is produced here with the precision and seriousness of a top terroir, yet often with a remarkably attractive price-quality ratio within the appellation. For lovers of classic, refined Saint-Émilion, Moulin Saint-Georges is a name to keep an eye on.

Parker
Offering up notes of minty berries, spices and new oak, the 2025 Moulin St Georges is medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and lively, with ripe tannins and the bright acids that always characterize this west-facing site opposite Ausone.

Vinous
(92-94) The 2025 Moulin Saint-Georges was picked between September 11 and 18 and aged for 18 months entirely in new oak. Incidentally, the vines here are under organic conversion. Firstly, the oak is neatly integrated on the nose, in fact, you would guess there is much less than 100%, the brambly red berry fruit mixed with sous-bois and leather coming through nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, with pliant tannins, very pure and refined, more blueberry and cassis fruit coming through with a rounded, smooth finish that is oddly just a little Petit Verdot-like (none here, incidentally). This should age well in bottle, but will be seductive in its flush of youth.

(90-92) The 2025 Moulin Saint-Georges is a delight. Plump and juicy, with lovely forward fruit, the 2025 offers up generous blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, mint and cinnamon. Soft, supple curves add to its considerable appeal. This inviting Saint-Émilion is a total charmer. Best of all, it should drink well with minimal cellaring.
