The 2025 Château Montrose is one of the absolute stars of Bordeaux En Primeur 2025. This iconic Saint-Estèphe combines the classic power of Montrose with remarkable precision, freshness, and refinement. According to various international critics, the wine already ranks among the château's greatest recent vintages. What is particularly impressive is the balance. Despite the concentration and depth, the wine remains elegant, energetic, and in complete harmony.
Château Montrose and the unique fourth terrace
Château Montrose has belonged to the absolute elite of Bordeaux since the 1855 classification. The estate is situated directly on the Gironde in Saint-Estèphe and boasts one of the most exceptional terroirs in the Médoc. The proximity of the river ensures natural temperature regulation, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly, even in warm years.
Since the 2023 vintage, the Grand Vin has been composed exclusively of grapes from the historic fourth terrace, situated directly in front of the château. This is considered the finest part of the estate and forms the heart of Montrose's identity. Here, concentration, freshness, and minerality come together in a unique way.
For more information about the rich history of this prestigious estate, we kindly refer you to the Winery tab.
An exceptional growing season
2025 saw a warm and relatively dry growing season. Particularly between May and July, significantly less rainfall fell than usual. However, thanks to the deep root structures of the old vines on the fourth terrace, the vines were able to cope with these conditions exceptionally well.
The Montrose team carefully adjusted vineyard practices to maintain freshness and balance. For instance, ground cover was removed earlier and defoliation was deliberately kept to a minimum to protect the grapes from excessive sun exposure.
A significant period of rain in August brought just enough cooling and balance to give the grapes their final finesse. The harvest took place from August 29 to September 20 and proceeded plot by plot. The extended harvest period made it possible to bring in every grape at exactly the optimal moment.
The final blend consists of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. With only 13.4% alcohol and a pH of 3.65, the wine possesses a classic balance that perfectly aligns with the style for which Montrose is renowned worldwide.
Scent, taste and character
The 2025 Château Montrose opens with an impressively layered bouquet of cassis, blackcurrants, dark blackberries, and ripe cherries. As the wine opens up, more complex aromas of black truffle, violets, graphite, cedarwood, tobacco, and subtle notes of smoldering charcoal emerge.
The aromatic precision is exceptional. Every layer seems perfectly defined, while the wine simultaneously possesses enormous depth. The combination of dark fruit, floral nuances, and mineral notes gives the wine a classic appearance strongly reminiscent of the greatest Montrose vintages.
On the palate, the wine immediately reveals its impressive structure. Full of flavor, powerful and concentrated, yet never heavy. The core of ripe black fruit is supported by tannins of exceptional quality that feel simultaneously powerful and refined.
The texture is tightly woven and multidimensional. Every sip reveals new layers of fruit, spices, graphite, and minerality. Despite the concentration, the wine remains remarkably fresh and energetic. It is precisely this combination of power and precision that makes this vintage so special.
The finish is impressively long and lingers for minutes, with notes of cassis, graphite, black truffle, and mineral nuances. This is a wine that will only reveal its full potential after many years of bottle aging.
Professional reviews
The 2025 Château Montrose is among the most highly regarded wines of the entire Bordeaux En Primeur campaign.
The Wine Advocate: 98-100 points (William Kelley)
Kelley calls the wine a timeless classic in the making. He praises the exceptional concentration, the quality of the tannins, the enormous depth, and the classic balance that is fully preserved despite the power.
Vinous: 98-100 points (Neal Martin)
Martin speaks of a Montrose that will be remembered as one of the château's great vintages. The purity of the fruit, the precision, and the minerality, in particular, make a deep impression.
James Suckling: 97-98 points
According to Suckling, the wine displays integrated and creamy tannins, refined aromas of black and red berries, and an exceptionally long, polished finish.
In addition, the wine received multiple top ratings from international critics, including Yves Beck, Falstaff, and WeinWisser, which further underscores the exceptional status of this vintage.

A timeless classic in the making, the 2025 Montrose unfurls in the glass with notes of dark berries, black truffle, burning embers and violets, gaining in range and detail with aeration. Full-bodied, dense and elegantly muscular, it's layered and multidimensional, with a prodigiously concentrated core of fruit, exceptional quality of tannin and a long, resonant finish. The 2025 is a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, derived exclusively from the estate's historic core on the fourth terrace situated just in front of the château itself. With a pH of 3.65 and 13.4% alcohol, it remains classically balanced despite its impressive power and intensity. Readers will have a fascinating time parsing the nuances of style and quality between the 2025, 2023 and 2022 over the decades to come!
Montrose is a terroir that takes hot vintages in its stride—witness the extraordinary wines produced here in 1893, 1921, 1929, 1947 and beyond—and the 2025 vintage is no exception. Only the young vines and parts of the Terrace 3 saw any arrested maturation due to hydric stress, and the team adapted their viticulture, removing cover crops earlier and avoiding de-leafing to preserve freshness. Harvest lasted a few days longer than usual, block by block, with macerations lasting 17–18 days, with even fewer interventions than usual since everything came at once and of its own accord.

Integrated and creamy tannins that are long and polished deliver an impressive palate of medium body, juicy fruit and a refined finish. Character of black and red currants with hazelnuts. Refined. Extremely long and polished, with plenty of Montrose character. Balanced. All there for the vintage. A blend of 77% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 4% cabernet franc.

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Montrose only comes from the Terrace IV, as has been the way since the 2023 vintage. It was picked from August 29 and finished not until September 20, so quite a long harvest, 16 days of picking between those dates. This vintage is matured in 60% new oak. This has another very intense nose with a potent graphite element that infuses the black fruit, beautifully defined but unapologetically classical in style. Wow. The purity of fruit is exceptional. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, very chiselled tannins, exquisite black fruit loaded with minéralité. So much freshness and vibrancy, gentle but insistent grip, very precise and refined on the finish, this is a Montrose that will rank as one for the ages. Wow (again).
- By Neal Martin on May 2026
I am fortunate to have tasted vintages of Montrose back to the late nineteenth century, but the recent run of vintages could be the best ever. “Two thousand twenty-five was more of a dry vintage than a warm one,” winemaker Vincent Decup told me, “especially from May to July, when there was half the normal amount of rainfall. We feared in August that we would have something extreme because we had high sugar but not phenolic maturity. The 80 mm of rain in August gave the fruit balance and lower alcohol, so there is 13.4% alcohol on the Grand Vin with a pH of 3.5 to 3.6. Unlike in 2022, there was no blockage, despite some hydric stress.”
CEO Pierre Graffeuille then introduced their white wine. “We have produced a white wine at Montrose since the nineteenth century, when the owner planted Riesling,” he revealed. “The Montrose Blanc comes from 1.5 hectares of vine planted on terrace 3 in 2017 (Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris) and 2023 (Marsanne and Roussanne). This is the first vintage with all four grape varieties.”

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
