EXCLUSIVE - DELIVERY SPRING 2028
The 2025 La Dame de Montrose demonstrates why this wine has been considered one of Bordeaux's strongest second wines for years. While many second wines primarily offer accessibility, La Dame de Montrose possesses a distinct identity and a quality that borders on Grand Vin. In 2025, this is more evident than ever. The wine combines the charm of Merlot with the precision and freshness that make the Montrose terroir so special. The result is an elegant, refined Saint-Estèphe that will provide great pleasure even when relatively young, yet simultaneously possesses sufficient structure for beautiful development in the bottle.
The second wine of an icon
La Dame de Montrose was introduced in 1983 as a tribute to Yvonne Charmolüe, who played an important role in the history of Château Montrose for many years. Since then, the wine has developed into one of Bordeaux's most respected second labels.
While Château Montrose comes from the famous fourth terrace directly in front of the château, La Dame de Montrose comes primarily from carefully selected clay-limestone plots within the estate. These soils yield grapes with a softer structure and a more expressive fruit profile, without losing the recognizable freshness and minerality of Montrose.

A modern interpretation of Saint-Estèphe
The 2025 vintage was characterized by a relatively dry growing season with limited rainfall between May and July. However, thanks to the location near the Gironde and a careful approach in the vineyard, the grapes remained perfectly balanced. The rainfall in August brought extra freshness and refinement, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally.
The harvest took place between August 29 and September 20. Each plot was harvested separately to achieve maximum precision. The final blend consists of 82% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. This makes the 2025 vintage one of the most Merlot-driven editions of La Dame de Montrose in recent years.
A slightly different approach was also chosen in the cellar. Only 15% of the wine ages in new oak barrels. In addition, foudres and amphorae are used, allowing the fruit to be expressed even more purely and precisely. This vinification aligns perfectly with the elegant character of the vintage.
Scent, taste and character
The 2025 La Dame de Montrose opens with seductive aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, red currants, and violets. As the wine develops further, notes of herbs, spices, oyster shell, graphite, and subtle earthy nuances emerge, hinting at its origin in Saint-Estèphe.
In comparison to the Grand Vin, the focus here is not on power, but rather on refinement and directness. The fruit is bright, pure, and inviting. The high Merlot component ensures a velvety texture, while the Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc provide extra tension and structure.
On the palate, the wine displays a beautiful balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity, and refined tannins. The structure is supple but certainly not simple. Beneath the attractive fruit lies sufficient depth to keep the wine interesting for years to come.
The finish is fresh, energetic, and strikingly mineral, with notes of redcurrant, cherries, chalky tension, and a subtle salty touch that lingers for a long time.
Professional reviews
The international wine press received the 2025 La Dame de Montrose with particular enthusiasm.
James Suckling: 93-94 points
Suckling praises the freshness, energy, and refinement of the wine, with aromas of red berries and a crisp, mineral finish.
The Wine Advocate: 91-93 points (William Kelley)
Kelley emphasizes the depth, the layered fruit core, and the lively structure of this Merlot-driven blend.
Vinous: 90-92 points (Neal Martin)
Martin calls the wine irresistible thanks to its combination of red fruit, tension, and accessibility. According to him, this wine will provide great drinking pleasure relatively soon after bottling.
In addition, La Dame de Montrose received excellent reviews from, among others, Yves Beck (96-97 points), Jeb Dunnuck (93-95 points), Colin Hay of The Drinks Business (93-95 points), and Bernard Burtschy (94-95 points), placing the wine among the absolute top of second wines in Bordeaux.

Parker
The Wine Advocate - RP (91-93)
Unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berries, fruitcake and spices, the 2025 La Dame de Montrose is medium- to full-bodied, deep and dense, with a lively and layered core of fruit, supple tannins and a bright, sapid finish. It's a blend of 82% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, incorporating maturation in different vessels (20% foudre and 5% amphora) and fewer rackings to maintain a more reductive profile that is better suited to the Merlot-dominant blend.
Montrose is a terroir that takes hot vintages in its stride—witness the extraordinary wines produced here in 1893, 1921, 1929, 1947 and beyond—and the 2025 vintage is no exception. Only the young vines and parts of the Terrace 3 saw any arrested maturation due to hydric stress, and the team adapted their viticulture, removing cover crops earlier and avoiding de-leafing to preserve freshness. Harvest lasted a few days longer than usual, block by block, with macerations lasting 17–18 days, with even fewer interventions than usual since everything came at once and of its own accord.

Drinking Window 2029 - 2042
The 2025 La Dame de Montrose is matured in 15% new oak, lower than before and including some foudres and amphorae, and driven by the 82% Merlot. The nose offers red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, iodine and violet aromas coming forth with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, slightly chalky, fine tension and a surfeit of freshness towards the finish. This will be wholly irresistible once in bottle and it will require minimal ageing to be enjoyed.
- By Neal Martin on May 2026
I am fortunate to have tasted vintages of Montrose back to the late nineteenth century, but the recent run of vintages could be the best ever. “Two thousand twenty-five was more of a dry vintage than a warm one,” winemaker Vincent Decup told me, “especially from May to July, when there was half the normal amount of rainfall. We feared in August that we would have something extreme because we had high sugar but not phenolic maturity. The 80 mm of rain in August gave the fruit balance and lower alcohol, so there is 13.4% alcohol on the Grand Vin with a pH of 3.5 to 3.6. Unlike in 2022, there was no blockage, despite some hydric stress.”
CEO Pierre Graffeuille then introduced their white wine. “We have produced a white wine at Montrose since the nineteenth century, when the owner planted Riesling,” he revealed. “The Montrose Blanc comes from 1.5 hectares of vine planted on terrace 3 in 2017 (Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris) and 2023 (Marsanne and Roussanne). This is the first vintage with all four grape varieties.”

Drinking Window
2030 - 2040
The 2025 La Dame de Montrose is an elegant, gracious wine. Crushed flowers, red-toned fruit, cinnamon and pomegranate lend tons of aromatic presence. The fruit is so bright, focused and forward. This is an especially elegant, refined Dame. The blend is Merlot-driven. Élevage is 75% in French oak barrels (15% new), 20% in foudre and 5% in amphora.

The second wine of Château Montrose, the 2022 La Dame De Montrose, tastes like a Grand Vin. More Merlot-dominated (71% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc), the terrific purity in its cassis and blue fruits give way to complex floral, forest floor, and violet aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant, I'd be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming 15 years.

Deep dark ruby colour with purple reflections, delicate brightening on the rim. Nuances of black forest berries with subtle floral notes in the background, ripe plums, a touch of noble wood, cloves and candied orange zest. Textured, elegant, ripe cherries, fine, integrated tannins, mineral and salty finish, very harmonious and persistent, a great food wine, good ageing potential.

Higher proportion of Merlot than usual in the blend, this is deep ruby red in colour and opens to sandalwood, cedar, black pepper and rosemary notes, alongside ripe blackberry and creme de cassis fruits. A lucky vineyard located next to the river at one of the widest points of the Estuary, this is impactful and confident, with the fingerprints of the vintage. 31hl/h yield. 30% new oak.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
