The 2025 Château Margaux is one of the absolute icons of Bordeaux En Primeur 2025. In a year in which nature severely limited yields, Château Margaux managed to create a Grand Vin with an exceptional combination of concentration, finesse, and precision. The wine possesses the classic elegance for which the château is famous, but combines this with an impressive depth and structure that make it one of the most complete wines of the vintage.

A historic château with an unparalleled reputation

Château Margaux is one of the most prestigious wineries in the world. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1855, the château is considered the benchmark for elegance within Bordeaux. The unique gravel soils of Margaux yield Cabernet Sauvignon with exceptional aromatic refinement and a tannin structure that is both powerful and silky.

Under the leadership of Philippe Bascaules, Château Margaux remains true to its philosophy of utmost precision. Each plot is vinified separately, and only the best batches are ultimately selected for the Grand Vin.

A small harvest of exceptional quality

The 2025 vintage experienced a growing season full of contrasts. Early and uniform flowering was followed by a dry summer that in some respects was reminiscent of 2022. From the start of summer, a water deficit gradually built up, while a heatwave in August accelerated ripening.

However, nearly 60 millimeters of rain fell in late August and early September. This precipitation proved crucial for restoring the water balance in the vineyards and ensured a more even and refined final ripening of the grapes. Instead of harvesting early, the team deliberately opted for full phenolic ripeness, a decision that would ultimately prove decisive for the quality of the wine.

The yield amounted to only 22 hectoliters per hectare, one of the lowest levels of the past hundred years. Ultimately, only 37% of the total harvest was selected for Château Margaux. Even lots that would effortlessly achieve Grand Vin status at many other estates were downgraded here due to the exceptional quality of the best plots.

The blend consists of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. This makes the 2025 one of the most Cabernet Sauvignon-driven Château Margaux of recent years.

Scent, taste and character

The 2025 Château Margaux opens with a deep and refined aromatic profile of cassis, dark plums, black cherries, and blackberries. Next, complex layers of violets, lilac, orange blossom, graphite, pencil shavings, and subtle spices unfold.

What stands out immediately is the immense precision. Despite the concentration, everything remains refined and detailed. The wine possesses an impressive aromatic depth, in which fruit, floral notes, and minerality remain constantly intertwined.

On the palate, Château Margaux displays its characteristic elegance. The texture is creamy, velvety, and perfectly integrated. The tannins are rich yet feel finely powdery. Beneath this refinement, however, lies an impressive structure that will allow the wine decades of aging.

The core of dark fruit is supported by lively acidity that brings tension and energy. As a result, the wine remains remarkably fresh and harmonious despite its concentration. The combination of power, precision, and balance is reminiscent of some of the château's greatest modern vintages.

The finish is exceptionally long, layered, and persistent. Notes of blackcurrant, violets, graphite, and mineral nuances remain present for minutes and build even further as the wine sits in the glass longer.

Professional reviews

The international wine press ranks Château Margaux 2025 among the absolute top wines of Bordeaux En Primeur 2025.

James Suckling: 98-99 points

The Wine Advocate: 97-100 points (William Kelley)
Kelley describes the wine as deep, layered, and authoritative, with a concentrated core of fruit, vibrant acidity, and exceptionally refined tannins. According to him, this is a monumental Château Margaux in the making.

Vinous: 97-99 points (Antonio Galloni)
Galloni describes the wine as dark, layered, and almost mysterious. He particularly emphasizes the exceptional balance, the enormous persistence, and the wine's ability to continue developing over many decades.

Virtually all leading international critics place Château Margaux 2025 in the absolute top of the vintage, particularly praising the combination of concentration, elegance, and aging potential.

Drinking window and food and wine pairings

The 2025 Château Margaux is built for the long term. Although the wine already displays much charm and precision in its youth, it will only begin to reveal its full complexity after ten to fifteen years of bottle aging. The expected drinking window runs from 2035 to 2075.

This great Margaux pairs beautifully with pigeon, roe deer, venison, veal sweetbreads, rack of lamb, Tournedos Rossini, and dishes with black truffle. Refined classic French preparations and aged hard cheeses also make excellent accompaniments.

Why buy 2025 Château Margaux at Grandcruwijnen?

With only 37% of the harvest selected for the Grand Vin, 2025 ranks among the most rigorously selected vintages of Château Margaux in recent decades. The combination of extremely low yields, a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, and exceptional precision during harvest and vinification has resulted in a wine that is already regarded as one of the great classics of the future.

For collectors of the greatest Bordeaux wines, Château Margaux 2025 is an essential purchase within Bordeaux En Primeur 2025. This is a wine that will hold a permanent place among the château's great vintages for the next half century.

Château Margaux is one of those names in the wine world that instantly sparks the imagination. A stately château, centuries of history, and wines that rank among the very best of Bordeaux.

History of Château Margaux

The roots of Château Margaux go back to the Middle Ages, when the estate was still known as Lamothe. In the 16th century, the Lestonnac family began transforming the land into a vineyard with serious ambition. Over the centuries, ownership changed hands many times, but the reputation steadily grew. In the early 19th century, the Marquis de la Colonilla built the current château, a refined neo-Palladian building that still dominates the skyline of Margaux today.

In 1855, Château Margaux was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé, the highest ranking in the famous Bordeaux classification. Yet the estate also faced harder times. In the 1970s its reputation began to fade, until Greek businessman André Mentzelopoulos revived it. Since then, Château Margaux has remained tied to his family and is now run by his daughter Corinne and her children.

Location and terroir of Château Margaux

The estate lies in the Médoc, on the left bank of the Gironde, within the Margaux AOC. This appellation is known for elegant and refined red wines. The soil at Château Margaux is distinctive: deep layers of gravel with touches of clay and limestone. The gravel provides excellent drainage, forcing the vines to root deeply. This results in grapes with great concentration and tension, the foundation of the estate’s renowned wines.

Grape varieties of Château Margaux

As is typical in the Médoc, Cabernet Sauvignon takes the lead. Around three-quarters of the vineyards are planted with it. Merlot makes up about twenty percent, with smaller plots of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. This blend gives the wines both power and finesse. For whites there’s a rare exception: Pavillon Blanc, made entirely from Sauvignon Blanc, grown on a smaller plot next to the red vineyards.

Château Margaux wine styles

The most famous wine is of course the Grand Vin de Château Margaux. Then there is Pavillon Rouge, the second wine often made from younger vines or parcels that don’t make it into the first selection. More recently, a third label has been added: Margaux du Château Margaux. For white wine lovers there is Pavillon Blanc, praised for its freshness and long ageing potential.

Winemaking combines tradition and modern technique. The red wines age for about one and a half to two years in new French oak, giving them depth and complexity. The white wine is aged for a shorter time, preserving its lively character. A special detail: Château Margaux even has its own cooperage, giving them full control over the quality of their barrels.

Interesting facts

  • Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, praised Château Margaux in the 18th century as one of the finest wines of Bordeaux.
  • The château itself is a listed historical monument and is often described as one of the most beautiful wine estates in France.
  • In 2015, a new tasting and research building was unveiled, designed by British architect Norman Foster, blending tradition and innovation.
