EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2025 belongs to the absolute top of Bordeaux 2025 and is regarded by various international critics as one of the greatest successes of the vintage. With scores of up to 100 points, a historically high proportion of Cabernet Franc, and a style that prioritizes precision, tension, and refinement, the estate once again confirms its unique position within Bordeaux. The 2025 combines impressive concentration with striking freshness and an almost weightless elegance.
Winery Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion
Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion occupies a unique position within Bordeaux. Situated as a green enclave within the city limits of Bordeaux, the estate boasts a distinctive terroir of gravel, clay, and limestone. Under the leadership of Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier, the château has developed into one of the region's most innovative and admired producers.
Pouthier consciously chooses a style that deviates from the classic Bordeaux approach. Whole clusters play an important role during fermentation, extraction is carried out with great care, and precision and balance are constantly sought during aging as well. The result is wines that are not driven by pure power, but by tension, detail, energy, and terroir expression.
A historical assemblage
The 2025 consists of 54% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17% Merlot. This makes this wine one of the most Cabernet Franc-driven editions ever produced at the château, comparable to the legendary 2016 vintage. Due to low fruit set in Merlot, the total proportion of Cabernet grapes reached a remarkable 83%, the highest level in the modern history of the estate.
This exceptional composition gives the wine a distinct aromatic identity with floral finesse, graphite-like minerality, and an impressive structure that remains simultaneously refined and energetic.
Volume 2025
The growing season started early and was characterized by high light intensity and exceptionally high levels of UV radiation. After a wet winter and a relatively classic spring, a long dry period of nearly three months without precipitation followed. The vines responded by producing smaller berries, resulting in extra concentration and a high amount of tannins.
However, 2025 differs fundamentally from, for example, 2022. Thanks to lower alcohol levels, extraction was less aggressive, placing less emphasis on power and volume and more on precision, structure, and definition. According to Guillaume Pouthier, this vintage is more about architecture than amplitude, where every element of the wine remains sharply defined.
Vinification and aging
The grapes were harvested between September 7 and 19. As much as 65% of the fermentation took place with whole bunches, one of the highest percentages within Bordeaux. Skin maceration lasted approximately 45 days at relatively low temperatures of around 27 degrees Celsius, considerably longer and gentler than at many traditional Bordeaux producers.
Aging takes place in a combination of 70% new French oak barrels, 19% large 18-hectoliter wooden vats, and 11% amphorae. This approach ensures that the wine retains its tension, energy, and aromatic purity. With only 13% alcohol, the balance remains remarkably fresh and refined.
Color, smell and taste
The 2025 presents a deep ruby red with purple reflections. The nose is exceptionally complex with aromas of pomegranate, cassis, mulberry, blackcurrant, and ripe blackberries. Additionally, refined notes of iris, peony, lavender, and violets appear, supported by graphite, cedarwood, incense, blood orange, iron, liquorice, and subtle spicy accents.
On the palate, the wine combines concentration with remarkable lightness. The texture is silky and refined, while the core of dark fruit provides depth and power. The tannins are abundant yet fully integrated and velvety. Notes of dark berries, spices, graphite, incense, and mineral accents are supported by a lively freshness and a striking salinity.
What makes this wine special is its combination of intensity and weightlessness. Despite the enormous concentration, everything remains clear, precise, and energetic. The long finish is characterized by floral nuances, dark fruit, minerality, and an impressive tension that lingers for minutes.
Summary of professional reviews
Yohan Castaing of The Wine Advocate rates the wine 95-98 points and praises the combination of tension, elegance, and clarity. He describes aromas of pomegranate, iris, peony, cassis, and dark berries, combined with a long, mineral-driven finish. According to him, the wine is more densely structured than the 2022, but at the same time perfectly balanced.
James Suckling awards 99-100 points and describes the wine's precision as seductive and intellectual. He highlights floral notes, graphite, iron, blood orange, and black fruit, combined with intense yet melting tannins. Antonio Galloni rates the wine 96-98 points and speaks of a deep, powerful Les Carmes that will require many years to fully develop. According to him, this vintage is among the most impressive and concentrated editions ever produced by Guillaume Pouthier and his team.
Falstaff, Yves Beck, and Jean-Marc Quarin also award the maximum score of 100 points. This places Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2025 undoubtedly among the most acclaimed wines of the entire en primeur campaign.

One of the most impressive wines of the vintage, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a striking effort that sets itself apart with seamless integration, even at this early stage, and a strong sense of identity. Poised, precise and unmistakably singular, it opens in the glass with a perfumed bouquet of iris, violet, dark berries, cherries, vine smoke and gentian. Medium to full-bodied, supple and notably fleshy for the vintage, it’s layered and textural, with a sappy, enveloping core of pure, vibrant fruit framed by finely grained, velvety tannins, culminating in a long, precise and gently stemmy finish. This is one of the rare wines of the vintage where sappiness is expressed with such finesse and charm, thanks in no small part to meticulous vineyard work and severe sorting in the winery. The blend is composed of 48% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, and it's maturing in a combination of 70% new oak, 19% foudres and 11% amphorae.

This is always an idiosyncratic wine. This year it’s stunning, with a unique floral aspect and excellent depth of pure blue fruit, mulberries, dried herbs and white pepper. So juicy and mouthwatering on the palate, with a medium to full body and fine tannins. There is a crystalized mouthfeel, but the tannins are fresh and well knit. This is already delicious, which indicates its superb balance. 48% cabernet franc, 29% cabernet sauvignon and 23% merlot.

From: Event Horizon: Bordeaux 2024 Primeur (May 2025)
The 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion contains more Cabernet Franc at 48% of the blend. Picked between September 17 and 27 using 52% whole bunch, this is aged in 70% new barrels, 19% new foudres and 11% amphora. This has impressive fruit concentration on the nose with redcurrant and blackberry fruit, hints of cassis and a dab of dark chocolate. Fine delineation. After time, there is something that nods to the Northern Rhône without losing typicité. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh with fine tannins, a subtle pepperiness imparted by the whole bunches and a tingle of pain d'épices towards the finish. Very harmonious and very delicious, this should provide 20 to 25 years of drinking pleasure. 13.2% abv.

Guillaume Pouthier has rejuvenated this urban estate located just a five-minute drive from the First Growth bearing the same surname. As usual, he went into detail about the growing season and voiced strong opinions about what factors underlie quality.
“Hydric deficit is vital,” he explains. “We need to manage the supply of water to the vine by optimising cover crops and leaves until harvest. Selection is also important, because the flowering was spun out over three weeks while véraison was over three to four weeks. So, we had to cut off any very late-ripening bunches. Some bunches had berries containing just six to nine degrees of potential alcohol, so the bain densimètrique was crucial. We were down 40% of volume after deselection. The quality of the tannins was very important. The lack of sunlight means transpiration is very different. You have less alcohol and higher acid, and you need to work on the structure to create creamier tannins.”

From: 2024 Bordeaux En Primeur: The Razor’s Edge (Apr 2025)
Seamless and silky in the glass, with superb balance, the 2024 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is one of the wines of the vintage. All the elements are so well balanced, always a sign of a superior vintage at this address. Floral notes, spice, leather and mocha run through a core of layered, beautifully persistent dark red fruit. Harvest took place between September 17 and 25, during one of the rare windows with little rain. As always, Les Carmes is done with a high percentage of stems (52%), specifically 100% for the Cabernet Franc, 50% for the Merlot and 20% for the Cabernet Sauvignon. Aging is 70% new oak barrels, 19% 18HL foudre and 11% amphora. New oak is already very nicely integrated, another sign of a superb vintage. The 2024 is a brilliant effort by the team led by Technical Director Olivier Pouthier.

Everything is special about this domain. It starts with the wine, which is highly sought after, but it also involves Philip Stark's incredible building. A highly innovative winemaker and a new vinification room since 2015 guarantee the vastly increased quality of this historic Chateau.
Guillaume Pouthier uses relatively many whole bunches and they undergo a long fermentation. The maturation in barrels, foeders and amphorae is also extremely long. Sometimes as long as 24 to 30 months. The Cabernet Franc character of Les Carmes Haut Brion is always evident, as is the characteristic low alcohol content. In recent years, this Chateau has been one of the top in Bordeaux.
