EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED SPRING 2028
Château Léoville Poyferré 2025 once again ranks among the absolute top of Saint-Julien. In a growing season marked by drought, heat, and low yields, Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier's team managed to create a wine that is both powerful and remarkably refined. The vintage combines the characteristic richness and sensuality of Léoville Poyferré with striking freshness and precision. The result is one of the most complete and convincing wines of the appellation in 2025.
Château Léoville Poyferré
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the most prestigious estates in Saint-Julien and has held the classification of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since 1855. The château is part of the historic Léoville family and is currently managed by the Cuvelier family. Under their leadership, the estate has developed into a fixture at the top of Bordeaux.
The vineyards are scattered across the best gravel terraces of Saint-Julien. These famous Mindel gravel soils provide excellent drainage and form the ideal basis for Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of deep gravel layers and clay in the subsoil offers sufficient water reserves during warm years, while simultaneously preserving the typical finesse and minerality of Saint-Julien.
Vintage 2025: freshness despite the heat
The 2025 growing season began with a dry winter and early development of the vines. The summer was warm and sunny, with prolonged dry conditions. The vines faced limited water reserves, but thanks to careful vineyard management, the team was able to maintain the balance. For each plot, it was assessed which ground cover could remain and where it needed to be removed to prevent competition for water.
The relatively cool nights in August played a crucial role. As a result, the aromatic freshness and natural acidity were preserved. Rain in early September subsequently ensured further refinement of the ripening, particularly of the Cabernet Sauvignon. According to the château, this produced a vintage that feels much fresher than the weather conditions would suggest. It is not without reason that people spoke internally of "Freshness Against All Expectations".
The yield amounted to only 20.38 hectoliters per hectare, one of the lowest levels of recent years. This extremely low yield resulted in grapes with high concentration and impressive aromatic intensity.
Blending and vinification
The final blend consists of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The harvest took place between September 8 and 23, a relatively early picking period that perfectly matched the character of the vintage.
After a rigorous selection, the grapes were fermented plot by plot in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. To optimally preserve the elegance of the fruit, a cold pre-fermentative maceration of six days was used. Additionally, lower fermentation temperatures were applied, and the extraction was deliberately carried out more gently than in some previous warm years.
The wine subsequently ages for 18 to 20 months in French oak barrels, 80% of which are new. Despite this generous oak aging, the wine remains remarkably harmonious and refined. The alcohol content is only 13.5%, which further supports the balance and freshness.
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, Château Léoville Poyferré 2025 displays a deep ruby red color with purple reflections. The nose is immediately seductive and recognizable. Aromas of cassis, black plums, blackberries, and dark cherries are supported by violets, licorice, graphite, mocha, and refined spices.
As the wine opens up, additional layers of camphor, cedarwood, cocoa, and mineral nuances emerge. The aromatic precision is impressive and lends the wine great complexity without excess.
On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be rich and concentrated, yet never heavy. Ripe black fruit forms the core, supported by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins. The structure is powerful yet fully integrated. Graphite, dark chocolate, spices, and subtle mineral notes provide additional depth.
What stands out most is the balance between concentration and elegance. Despite the low yields and the intensity of the fruit, the wine remains energetic and refined. The finish is long, precise, and mineral, with persistent notes of cassis, graphite, and spices.
A classic Léoville Poyferré
According to Neal Martin, the wine displays everything that lovers of Léoville Poyferré seek. He praises the sensual style, the pure expression of black fruit, and the impressive precision. According to him, the graphite finish and the fine minerality make it clear why this wine belongs among the benchmarks of Saint-Julien.
James Suckling also emphasizes the combination of concentration, freshness, and refinement. His assessment underscores the wine's cohesion, fine-grained tannins, and impressive length. Even the more reserved review by The Wine Advocate acknowledges the depth, structure, and significant aging potential of this vintage.

Shy and introverted at this stage, the 2025 Léoville Poyferré reveals a somber bouquet of oak, spice, licorice and ripe dark berries. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and deep, it’s broad-shouldered and structured, built around a creamy new-oak mid-palate framed by an abundant tannic chassis that carries through to a spicy, oak-influenced finish.

Beautiful on the nose. Stylish and concentrated, medium- to full-bodied, with freshness and a savory note in the finish. Cohesive and precise, with fine-grained, focused tannins. Very structured at the end. A solid and bracing Medoc.

Vinous
The 2025 Léoville-Poyferré was picked from September 8 to 23 at just 20.3 hl/ha, undergoing a six-day cold pre-fermentation maceration and matured in 80% new oak. This is quintessential Poyferré on the nose, quite sensual and pure in style, with layers of ripe black fruit, black plum, a hint of camphor and violet. Wonderful delineation. The palate is framed by fine tannins, beautifully balanced, again quite minerally in style, with a precise and persistent graphite-tinged finish. If you love Poyferré, then you are going to adore this. - By Neal Martin on May 2026
Sara Lecompte-Cuvelier guided me through her portfolio, which also includes Le Crock in Saint-Estèphe and Moulin Riche. “Alcohol levels are quite low,” she told me. “It was quite an early harvest, like in 2022, and we decided early on which cover crops to keep in order to avoid competition for water. We decided to take them out on the drier parcels. We also reduced de-leafing and only did a little on the more vigorous plots. We had to be careful about the extraction, reducing the temperature to around 26°C during fermentation, pumping-over and maceration, with a shorter cuvaison.”

In the heart of the Médoc, Château Léoville Poyferré has always been one of the most prestigious wineries. There was once a single domain called Léoville that was famous throughout the region. In the course of history it has come into the possession of different families through heirs and major events. In 1865 the domain came into the hands of the bankers Baron d'Erlanger and Armand Lalande. They had to contend with setbacks, in the form of the grape aphid and mildew epidemics. Today the castle belongs to the Cuvelier family. They have invested enormously since the 1980s with extraordinary results. Today the château belongs to the top of the Saint-Julien.
