Winery Château Larrivet Haut-Brion

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the more well-known names in Pessac-Léognan and has developed significantly in recent years, particularly in the field of white wine. The estate combines a classic Bordeaux foundation with modern precision in the vineyard and cellar. Larrivet Haut-Brion's white wines are known for their aromatic expression, tension, and gastronomic versatility. Furthermore, the château deliberately opts for a style in which concentration and freshness coexist. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is located in Pessac-Léognan, south of Bordeaux. The white vineyards lie on sandy gravel soils over limestone, a terroir that provides tension, minerality, and aromatic precision. The calcareous subsoil plays an important role in preserving freshness, especially in warmer years. The 2025 vintage was marked by a hot and very dry summer. Thanks to the water reserves built up in 2024, the vines remained well-balanced. Furthermore, specific canopy management was applied to protect the grapes from direct sunlight, preserving freshness and aromatic finesse despite the intense drought.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The 2025 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc consists of 88% Sauvignon Blanc and 12% Sémillon. Sauvignon Blanc provides tension, citrus, and aromatic precision, while Sémillon adds extra texture and breadth.

The white vineyards cover approximately 7.9 hectares, and the average age of the vines is about 30 years. The grapes are harvested by hand plot by plot at optimal ripeness and transported in small crates to preserve maximum quality.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest took place between August 25 and 28, relatively early to optimally preserve freshness and aromatic precision. After manual selection, the grapes are gently pressed using pneumatic presses, producing very pure must.

Fermentation proceeds relatively quickly and at low temperatures to maximize the aromatic potential of the vintage. Only very light settling is applied to preserve tension and purity. The wine subsequently ages 70% in new French oak barrels and 30% in large wooden vats. This aging process provides extra texture and depth, while the wood remains beautifully integrated and leaves the freshness fully intact.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc immediately stands out for its expressive and pronounced style. On the nose, notes of lime, grapefruit zest, and ripe pear, complemented by subtle spiciness, flint, and a hint of candied ginger. As the wine opens up, nuances emerge reminiscent of baked apple pie and light buttery accents, almost Burgundian in character.

On the palate, the wine combines breadth with striking precision. The texture is rich and enveloping, yet is continuously supported by a linear line of fresh acidity that energizes the wine. Citrus fruit and mineral tension remain central, while fine bitterness and subtly integrated wood add extra depth.

What is special about this wine is the combination of power and refinement. Despite its concentration, the style remains lively and precise. The finish is long, saline, and gastronomic, with striking minerality and freshness that lingers.

Development and drinking window

The 2025 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion Blanc shows great expression early on, but clearly possesses aging potential. The combination of tension, structure, and wood aging will lend the wine extra complexity in the coming years.

According to Antonio Galloni, the drinking window lies between 2027 and 2035. In the first years, citrus, tension, and aromatic freshness dominate, after which more layering and tertiary nuances will emerge.

Summary of professional reviews

92-94 points – Antonio Galloni, Vinous: calls the wine one of the most unique and expressive white Bordeaux of the vintage, with notes of pear, candied ginger, and an almost Burgundian texture. 94-95 points – James Suckling: praises the combination of texture, freshness, and precision, with a strikingly saline and long finish.

This château, located directly opposite Ch. Haut Bailly is a very interesting terroir of very good quality. The prices of the wines remain favorable for the quality offered. It is owned by the Gervoson family and Bruno Lemoine is its director. Since 2015, they have a new cellar master, François Gaudichon, who is an oenologist and has gained experience in the Burgundy region (Vosne Romanée). Since then, the advice has come from Stéphane Derenoncourt (formerly Michel Rolland).

The history of Château Larrivet Haut-Brion goes back to 1840, the year in which the château was first mentioned among the first plantings of Pessac-Léognan. To this day, the château has become more and more famous. After several name changes from Château de Canolle, to La Rivette and Château Brion-Larrivet, the winery was renamed Château Haut-Brion Larrivet in 1874 by the then owner Ernest Laurent, a Bordeaux négotiant (officially recognized and authorized dealer in Bordeaux wines).

In 1893 the winery was sold again and then it came into the possession of Jacques Guillemaud in 1941 and acquired its present name: Château Larrivet Haut-Brion. Today it owns approximately 75 hectares of vineyards on mainly gravel subsoil with sand and clay. Château Larrivet Haut-Brion produces about 4500 liters of red wine per hectare and 4000 liters of white wine per hectare and plants 7700 vines per hectare. This is 2300 vines below average and this greatly benefits both the intensity and quality of the wine. Her red wines age on average for 14 to 18 months in different oak barrels and then another 10 to 11 months — depending on the vintage — in the cellars of the winery.
