Winery Château Kirwan

Château Kirwan belongs to the historic Grand Cru Classés of Margaux and has been part of the Bordeaux elite since the classification of 1855. The château is owned by the Schÿler family and is known for a style in which elegance, refinement, and aromatic precision take center stage. In recent years, there has been a strong focus on terroir expression and finer extraction, resulting in wines displaying more tension and purity. Kirwan combines classic Margaux elegance with sufficient concentration for long aging. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

Region, climate and location

Château Kirwan is located in Margaux, an appellation known for elegant and aromatic Bordeaux with refined tannins. The vineyards lie on deep gravel soils that ensure excellent drainage and optimal ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, while underlying clay provides extra balance and freshness. The 2025 vintage was characterized by a hot, dry, and early season. Despite the heat, Kirwan managed to maintain a remarkably fresh style. A prolonged water shortage from the summer resulted in small grapes with high concentration, while rain between late August and early September proved crucial to balance ripening. As a result, tannins, acidity, and sugar were able to develop remarkably harmoniously.

Vineyards and grape varieties

The blend of Château Kirwan 2025 consists of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot, and 1% Carménère. Cabernet Sauvignon clearly forms the backbone of the wine, providing structure, freshness, and length, while Merlot ensures roundness and suppleness.

Yields were relatively low at approximately 25 hl/ha, partly due to the small berries that developed as a result of the drought and heat. Despite normal bunch numbers, the grapes remained remarkably small, even smaller than in 2022. This resulted in high concentration and phenolic ripeness without loss of freshness.

Harvest, vinification and aging

The harvest took place between September 9 and 20 under excellent conditions. All five grape varieties ripened remarkably evenly, allowing plot after plot to be harvested without interruption.

Following selection, a maceration of approximately twenty days took place, during which both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurred simultaneously. This approach contributes to softer tannins and greater integration. Subsequently, the wine was immediately transferred to French oak barrels, approximately 35% of which were new. With an alcohol content of 13.5% and a pH of 3.50, the wine displays a remarkably classic balance, especially considering the warm conditions of the year.

Color, smell and taste

The 2025 Château Kirwan initially requires some air but then opens impressively. On the nose, notes of blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries, complemented by violets, subtle spiciness, and light undertones of forest floor. Additionally, nuances of dark chocolate, tobacco, and graphite provide extra depth.

On the palate, medium to full-bodied in style, with a strikingly refined texture. The tannins are silky and soft, almost velvety, while a clear line of acidity lends the wine freshness and tension. Despite the concentration, the wine never feels heavy, but rather classic and precise.

The style is typically Margaux. Elegant, aromatic, and refined, yet with sufficient concentration and structure to age beautifully. The finish is long, smooth, and harmonious, with dark fruit, floral notes, and subtle minerality that linger.

Development and drinking window

The 2025 Château Kirwan possesses excellent aging potential and will refine further in the coming years. The combination of fresh acidity, ripe tannins, and concentrated fruit gives the wine a classic structure that will develop beautifully in the bottle.

According to Neal Martin, the optimal drinking window lies between 2032 and 2055. In the first few years, the wine will primarily display elegance and fruit, after which additional complexity, spiciness, and tertiary nuances will further develop.

Chateau Kirwan has belonged since 1925 to the Schÿler family, a négociants family from Bordeaux. The vineyard of 37 hectares is divided into two parts, 2/3 is a ridge of stones around the castle in Cantenac, where the Cabernet is planted. 1/3 contains more clay west of the appellation, where the Merlot is planted. The family has made huge investments to bring the cru to a very high level in terms of quality. Today it is Philippe Delfaut who vinifies and gives more and more refinement and elegance.
