Winery Château Gazin
Château Gazin belongs to the historic elite of Pomerol and is situated on the famous plateau, right next to iconic names such as Pétrus and Château l'Évangile. The origins of the estate date back to the twelfth century, when the Knights of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem managed a hospice here for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Today, the château is run by the Bailliencourt family, who place a strong emphasis on precision in the vineyard and cellar. Gazin is known for a style in which depth, structure, and elegance come together, without excess or over-extraction. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Château Gazin is situated on the central plateau of Pomerol, a terroir of blue clay, gravel, and sand that is among the most sought-after in Bordeaux. The famous blue clay layer, in particular, plays a significant role. This soil retains moisture during dry periods and provides tension, freshness, and refinement, even in warm vintages. The 2025 vintage was characterized by warm and very dry conditions throughout almost the entire growing season. Following an early budburst, flowering and fruit set occurred under excellent conditions, ensuring homogeneous ripening. The dry summer resulted in exceptionally small grapes with great concentration and aromatic intensity. Rain at the end of August ultimately proved crucial, bringing extra balance, refinement, and freshness to the grapes. At Gazin, 2025 will also be remembered as a year of extremely low yields. Due to the restructuring of parts of the vineyard and the extreme drought on the plateau, production was exceptionally low, possibly even historically low. At the same time, the quality is considered by the château to be particularly high.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The Château Gazin 2025 blend consists of 87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 3% Cabernet Franc. Merlot clearly forms the heart of the wine and benefited optimally from the deep blue clay soils. This gives the wine roundness, texture, and depth. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, planted on more gravelly parts of the terroir, bring extra tension, freshness, and aromatic precision. The vineyards are situated on one of the best terroirs in Pomerol and are monitored plot by plot. Due to the dry conditions in 2025, the grapes became exceptionally small, resulting in extra concentration without loss of finesse.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest was conducted entirely by hand based on optimal ripeness per plot. Merlot was harvested between August 28 and September 10, Cabernet Franc on September 15, and Cabernet Sauvignon on September 19. Notable was the extremely early start of the harvest, the earliest in the estate's history. Vinification was deliberately kept gentle to preserve elegance and terroir expression. According to the château, very precise extraction was employed to respect the delicate structure of the fruit. This resulted in a wine with refined tannins and striking harmony. After fermentation, Château Gazin 2025 ages for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which are new and 60% second-pass barriques. The relatively moderate influence of the wood supports the texture without overpowering the fruit.
Color, smell and taste
Château Gazin 2025 opens deep and layered, with aromas of black plums, blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries, complemented by raspberries and red currants that bring striking freshness. Additionally, violets, lavender, and subtle floral notes appear, adding extra elegance.
On the palate, medium to full-bodied, with a remarkably refined structure and plenty of energy. The texture feels silky and round, while fine, powdery tannins give the wine direction and length. Despite the warm vintage, the wine remains surprisingly fresh and precise, a quality explicitly noted by various critics.
Dark fruit is supported by nuances of mocha, cocoa, liquorice, and fine spices, complemented by subtle notes of tree bark and graphite. What impresses most is the balance. The wine possesses concentration and depth, yet remains lively and elegant at the same time. The finish is long, refined, and almost caressing, with a beautiful combination of ripe fruit, tension, and mineral freshness.
The 2025 style feels like classic Pomerol, but with extra precision and energy. Several critics call this one of the most complete Gazin of recent years.

A blend of 87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2025 Gazin unfurls in the glass with notes of plums, dark berries and violets. Medium- to full-bodied, rich and layered, with a dense core of fruit framed by plenty of sweet, powdery tannin, it concludes with a long, youthfully structured finish.

From: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur: Le Freak (Apr 2026)
The 2025 Gazin is a fabulous wine. It's deep, rich and powerful but also wonderfully layered in the glass, with real finesse and tons of nuance. Dark red-toned fruit, lavender, mocha, spice and licorice open beautifully. The 2025 impresses with its captivating energy, finely sketched details and sublime balance. Magnificent. Tasted two times
