EXCLUSIVE - DELIVERY EXPECTED END OF 2027/BEGINNING OF 2028

The 2025 Château Coutet is a powerful yet refined Barsac Premier Grand Cru Classé, in which concentration and freshness come together beautifully. This vintage clearly demonstrates why Coutet is known for its combination of richness, tension, and chalky precision.

Winery Château Coutet

Château Coutet is one of the oldest and most respected estates in Barsac and belongs to the Premier Grand Cru Classé from the 1855 classification. The château is managed by the Baly family and is known for its fresh, mineral style among the sweet wines of Bordeaux. Thanks to the chalky soils of Barsac, the wines distinguish themselves through lively acidity, precision, and a more energetic style than many other Sauternes. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.

The wine and blend

The 2025 consists of 97% Sémillon, 2% Sauvignon Blanc, and 1% Muscadelle. Sémillon forms the rich, textural heart of the wine. Sauvignon Blanc adds freshness and aromatic tension, while Muscadelle subtly contributes to the complexity.

Vineyard, terroir and vintage

The vineyards of Coutet are situated on clay-limestone soils, which are essential for the typical tension and minerality of Barsac. The 2025 vintage experienced a dry growing season with less rainfall than average. This resulted in small, concentrated grapes with a high sugar content.

At the same time, the nights remained cool, preserving aromatic freshness and acidity. The development of noble rot began in mid-September. This was followed by several selective picking rounds until mid-October, with a very homogeneous development of botrytis.

Vinification and aging

The wine ages for approximately 18 months, 25% of which is in new oak. This moderate oak influence adds extra complexity without overpowering the fruit or minerality. The result is a Barsac with richness and depth, but also with the fresh, precise signature for which Coutet is known.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine displays a bright golden-yellow color. The nose is intense and expressive, with aromas of quince, ripe apricot, and candied citrus, complemented by mango, honey, and subtle spiciness. On the palate, the wine combines a full, rich texture with striking freshness. The initial taste is round and concentrated, followed by lively acidity that provides tension and balance. Notes of candied fruit, crème brûlée, citrus, ginger, and light spices are supported by a distinct mineral line. The finish is long, refined, and slightly saline.

Summary of professional reviews

The 2025 Château Coutet is widely praised, with scores up to 97 points. Neal Martin rates the wine 95-97 points, emphasizing the purity, freshness, and chalky tension of the terroir. Antonio Galloni awards 94-96 points, noting the rich texture, crème brûlée, passion fruit, and candied ginger. Jacobo García Andrade gives 94-95 points, highlighting the combination of concentration and fresh acidity. The common thread in the ratings is the balance between power, freshness, and precision.

Food and wine pairing

This Barsac pairs excellently with foie gras, blue cheese, or desserts with citrus, apricot, and peach. The wine also comes into its own with Asian dishes featuring sweet and sour elements or mild spiciness.

Château Coutet was recognized as a classified first growth in the 1855 classification, but the soils around Barsac, some of the coldest in the area, had been planted with vines for centuries. The Baly family keeps a vigilant and attentive watch on the place, inspired by the great history of the Sauternes and Barsac appellations, but also informed by a broader view of the world. In keeping with the great tradition of the Sauternes and Barsac appellations, the Château Coutet vineyard is planted with Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle grapes.
