EXCLUSIVE - EXPECTED EARLY 2028
Winery Château Cos d'Estournel
Château Cos d'Estournel belongs to the absolute elite of Bordeaux and is considered one of the most iconic estates of Saint-Estèphe. The château, known for its Oriental architecture and famous pagodas, was created by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel, who, in the early 19th century, combined his vision of wine with influences from distant trade routes. Since 2000, the estate has been led by Michel Reybier, with innovation, terroir expression, and precision work at the forefront. In addition to the famous red Grand Vin, Cos d'Estournel Blanc has also become one of the absolute top white Bordeaux wines. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
Cos d'Estournel Blanc is produced in the northern Médoc, near the mouth of the Gironde. Unlike many other white Bordeaux wines, this terroir benefits from a relatively cool microclimate, combined with natural ventilation from the Atlantic Ocean. This ensures an exceptional aromatic profile and the preservation of freshness, even in warm years. The soils consist of a combination of calcareous clay and gravel, with the calcareous terroirs in particular playing a key role in the tension and precision of the wine.
The 2025 vintage saw early vine development, a recurring theme throughout the entire growing season. Significant rainfall in April was followed by a warm and dry summer. Nevertheless, the balance was maintained thanks to cooling from the Gironde and well-timed rain in late August. Notably, Cos d'Estournel Blanc has never been harvested so early since the wine's introduction in 2005, between August 25 and September 3. Despite the warm conditions, tension, freshness, and aromatic precision remained fully intact.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The blend of Cos d'Estournel Blanc 2025 consists of 56% Sauvignon Blanc and 44% Sémillon. The relatively high proportion of Sémillon plays an important role this year, lending extra depth, texture, and layering to the wine. Sauvignon Blanc provides tension, aromatic precision, and the pronounced freshness for which Cos Blanc is known. The calcareous clay soils perform exceptionally well in 2025 and enhance the linear tension of the wine. The estate has been investing for years in replanting and plot rotation, focusing on optimal terroir expression. Thanks to plot-specific vinification, each component of the blend can individually contribute to complexity and balance. Furthermore, the proximity of the Gironde ensures natural temperature regulation, essential for a wine of this precision.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The harvest of Cos d'Estournel Blanc took place exceptionally early, from August 25 to September 3, the earliest since the first vintage in 2005. The low yields helped keep the grapes optimally concentrated and healthy, despite the warm and dry conditions of the season. Thanks to the cooling influence of the Gironde, the freshness was preserved excellently. In 2025, the wine achieves approximately 13.17% alcohol, a pH of exactly 3.00, and a very high total acidity of 4.9. This explains the striking tension and liveliness noted by several wine journalists. The combination of ripe fruit and exceptional freshness makes this one of the most precise white Bordeaux of the year.
Color, smell and taste
Cos d'Estournel Blanc 2025 immediately stands out for its immense tension and aromatic layering. The aroma opens with fresh citrus, dried citrus peel, lime, and grapefruit, followed by honeysuckle, white flowers, and subtle floral nuances. Behind this, layers of ripe pear, white peach, and a refined chalky minerality emerge.
On the palate, the wine is full and concentrated, yet at the same time exceptionally energetic. The high acidity lends an almost electric tension to the wine, without ever becoming austere or harsh. James Suckling even speaks of an “electrifying acidity” and cautiously suggests that this might well be the best Cos d'Estournel Blanc ever. That combination of ripe fruit, tension, and depth is very impressive.
The relatively high proportion of Sémillon provides texture and breadth in the mid-palate, while Sauvignon Blanc ensures lift, precision, and length. The finish is very long, tight, and mineral, with citrus oil, floral notes, and a refined salinity that lingers. Neal Martin particularly emphasizes the fine tension and persistent finish, while Antonio Galloni praises the combination of power and mid-palate richness.
Development and drinking window
Cos d'Estournel Blanc 2025 has the concentration and structure to age beautifully, yet possesses enough charm to impress even when relatively young. In the first few years, citrus, floral notes, and tension dominate. With additional bottle aging, more complex aromas of honey, beeswax, dried citrus, and subtle spiciness will emerge. A drinking window from approximately 2028 to 2045 seems realistic. In top condition, this wine can likely continue to mature for even longer.

The 2025 Blanc, a blend of 56% Sauvignon Blanc and 44% Sémillon, reveals aromas of white fruits, herbs and spice. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s dense and structured with a tensile, more energetic profile than usual, concluding with a citrus-inflected, long and fresh finish.

An incredible wine with electrifying acidity and great depth and concentration. It’s full-bodied and full of character, showing fresh and dried citrus, then honeysuckle and other white flowers. The palate takes off with bright, intense acidity. A pH of just over 3 gives a unique combination of tangy acidity and ripe fruit. Special white. 56% sauvignon blanc and 44% semillon. Best ever?

From: Hot Body, Cold Blood: 2025 Bordeaux En Primeur (May 2026)
The 2025 Cos d'Estournel Blanc was picked between August 25 and September 3 and matured in just 6% new oak. It is very fragrant and pure on the nose, Anjou pear and wild peach, vanilla pod and light chamomile scents evolving with time in the glass. Fine delineation. The palate is very well balanced, with a silver thread of acidity. Fine tension, quite persistent in the mouth, with a brisk and focused finish, this is a delicious white Cos d'Estournel that, again, will be difficult to resist once in bottle.
- By Neal Martin on May 2026
“Dry and hot conditions arrived in early April,” winemaker Dominique Arangoïts told me, “which meant that vines could adapt to the situation and preserve water by making smaller leaves and berries. We had some rain in the quantity and at the time that we needed. The first was between April 19 and 21, when there was 115 mm of rain. Flowering took place in incredible conditions, while warm temperatures in June accelerated precocity. There was 25 mm of rain on July 21 at the beginning of véraison so we could avoid blockage. It was dry until the end of August, and there was rain between August 28 and 31. After that, we did not have hot temperatures. We commenced picking on September 3, the earliest since 1982. This vintage combines a dry year and ripe tannins with cooler-toned elements such as lower alcohol—the Cos d’Estournel is 13.25% with a pH around 3.68. We cropped at 29 hl/ha, the same as in 2024 but for different reasons.”

Château Cos d'Estournel is a winery in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the Bordeaux region of France. It is also the name of the red wine produced by this property. The wine produced here was classified as one of fifteen Deuxièmes Crus (Second Growths) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855.
Château Cos d'Estournel produces the eponymous grand vin, the second wine since the 1994 vintage, Les Pagodes de Cos from the estate's younger vines, as well as Château Marbuzet from fruit from nearby plots. The property is adjacent to Château Lafite-Rothschild in the neighboring commune of Pauillac. The name Cos refers to a "mound of pebbles" in the Gascon dialect and the name Cos d'Estournel was given in 1810 by Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel.
The estate has changed hands several times throughout its history, beginning in 1852 when it was purchased by English banker Charles Cecil Martyns. In 1869 it was sold to the Spanish Errazu family, only to be sold again 20 years later, in 1889, to the Hostein family from Bordeaux. Through his marriage to Marie-Thérèse Hostein, Louis-Victor Charmolue, who also owned Château Montrose, acquired control of Cos d'Estournel in 1894. In 1917 it was sold to Fernand Ginestet. The chateau has remained in the Ginestet family ever since, becoming part of Domaines Prats in 1970, the combined property of the Ginestet and Prats families, and controlled by Bruno Prats.
In June 2008, it was announced that Michel Reybier, the current owner of Cos d'Estournel, has purchased Napa winery Chateau Montelena. However, in November 2008, this agreement was canceled, the termination of the transaction by Chateau Montelena allegedly due to the fact that Reybier Investments had "been unable to meet its obligations". From an estate of 100 hectares, the vineyard area extends over 70 hectares (170 acres), divided into 30 parcels, mainly composed of the grape varieties 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with a small cultivation of Cabernet Franc and Petit verdot that seems participate too little in modern production. Annual production is typically 32,000 cases.
